The Sony PSP gets a $30 price reduction

Last month, a Sony UK executive let loose word that the next PlayStation Portable will be a smaller and lighter. Shortly after, the executive retracted his comments, saying that plans of further miniaturization are just a part of Sony’s R&D strategy, not necessarily immediately applicable to the PSP.

While Sony may not be following through with new PSP hardware yet, the company seems to be enacting one of its usual phases throughout the console lifecycle—the price drop. According to GameStop and EB Games promotional materials sent to Joystiq, the PSP Core System will receive a $30 price drop effective Tuesday, April 3. The PSP Core System will be marked down from $199.99 to $169.99.

The PSP has stood on relatively firm ground given that the handheld market is one long dominated by Nintendo. Although the Nintendo DS remains the undisputed leader of the portable market, Sony is breathing new life and functionality into its portable through connectivity options with the PlayStation 3. Thanks to the PlayStation Network, the PS3 is able to send classic PSone titles for play on the PSP.

PSP - PS3 Connectivity!

Rear mirror view for the win!

Also, I heard that while it will be possible to download PS1 games on your PS3, you can only transfer them to your PSP to play. Is that true?

Nonsense. Popstation will easily allow you to convert your old PSOne games for use on your PSP....provided you have the ability and wherewithal to run real firmware on your PSP.

Really though, I'm not sure how you heard it emphasized that the PS1 games were for download on the PS3, but that has always been more of a means to an end, and that end would be playing the games on your PSP.

Allegedly, playing these downloaded games on the PS3 is a feature in the works....but I'd bet these games are cheaper on eBay than the Sony Store.

It might have been from this little, obscure site called "DailyTech"

I don't keep up with the latest PS3-PSP connectivity, but even if things have changed drastically within 4 months, you can't jump on a guy for quoting a policy that they just announced a few months ago.

It has always been a means to get the games to the PSP.
Thanks for the backup.

Too little, too late

On one hand, it is nice to see that Sony is actually trying to do something with their products. On the other hand, it's time to just let the PSP die. As it stands right now, total shipments of the PSP worldwide during the 3 month holiday sales period sat at 1.46 million. UMD movies have been pulled from just about all major retailers, and the media aspect of the PSP is being eaten into by the Mylo. I seriously do not understand why I keep seeing PSP announcements. This is like seeing Virtual Boy announcements in 1997. Now, I can't stop Dailytech from printing PSP news... but seriously, wake up and smell the DS please. The PSP has tanked worst than the Dreamcast, and both developers and publishers need to get over that fact.

Say WHAT? PSP is more fun of the two DS. Yeah, DS has more games - but quantity doesn't equal quality. I have enjoyed LocoRoco more than any game on DS. And then there's Daxter. My old GBA was fun, for what it was. DS on the other hand is just a lot of unfulfilled potential. Simplistic games that in the end leave you empty. I play games because I like them, not because I need to kill a few minutes between other activities. I wouldn't call PSP a success, and yes it could've been much better were it not for Sony's antics, but it's hardly a failure. If it's time for PSP to die, it's definitely time for DS to do the same. They're both getting long in the tooth anyhow.

Sour grapes on DS success?

Dreamcast sales by the time it was dropped by Sega: 10 million. PSP sales in the equivalent amount of time: approx 24 million. DS sales to date: 37 million.

I own and am satisfied with the DS and the PSP.

I don't think I would consider the device obsolete. I travel all the time and the fact I can bring movies, music, and games with me on one device is very convenient. Much more entertaining than a DS.

I bring movies, music, and games with me all the time on my DS. The homebrew community is so crafty :P.

I have a DS and a PSP, both homebrew enabled. The PSP's screen and video quality thoroughly trounces the DS as far as movie watching goes. I've heard anime compresses well and turns out ok on the DS, though.
