Finally, your PSP can now start without automatically playing a UMD

To coincide with the wicked PlayStation 3 release, Sony has released a new firmware for its PSP to also bring it up to its third version. New for version 3.00 include the following changes:

PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
[Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
[Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
[UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

The big news behind this release is that adds PSP Remote Play, allowing for the Sony portable to interact with the PS3 wirelessly. According to Kotaku, the new Remote Play functionality leaves much to be desired, as the author calls it “pretty worthless all around.”

In all fairness, the PSP 3.00 update does deliver what it originally promised – it’s just that the real usefulness of the added functionality remains in question. Thankfully, if history is any indication, both the PS3 and PSP will see many features added to their repertoire through future system updates.

to be fair, it's been more difficult lately to get past 2.71 than it seems to have taken to get up to 2.71. From 2.0 up to the present, it's been a trivial matter, but now that 3.0 is out, I'm sure they are already working the firmware dump to see what's changed.

I thought 3.0 was supposed to have PSone gaming? I'm going out on a limb with the whole "PLAYSTATION" network game feature and assume that's what it means, but we'll have to wait and see. This is from psp-hacks.com:

I'm not sure why they are going this route, but that sucks if you need a PS3 for this feature.

Hehe, sounds as if the launch was a last man standing event all around the globe, especially with the wicked link.

My only concern regarding all this is that I'm really hoping those who paid for the PSP and PS3 will get their money's worth through those firmware updates.

"I hope" is never an issue with Sony. Sony always delivers. Maybe not what your expecting, but there is no denying it. Cutting edge of innovation and technology is the Company's strong suit.

Cool, the best auxiliary feature of PS3 so far

This is great! There were rumours that this was coming, but nothing firm until now. Now I will finally be able to watch latest episodes of anime or whatnot in bed on my PSP, without having to drag my laptop or worry much about falling asleep or putting laptop aside when I'm done, never mind the heat, cables etc. If I could, I would seriously buy PS3 right now. It does tip the buying decision for me, as it provides some value until games are out.

Provided it actually works without major kinks, of course.

I don't think I'm going to be updating my PSP at all. I have 2.80 and now I kind of wish I didn't install it so I could hack my PSP. Now, as much as this sounds like an illegal activity, I actually want to put my own games on my memory stick. I think my PSP's UMD drive is dying as it's making quite a foul *errrrrr* noise :P. It also lets me take a couple games with me without actually taking the game.

Also, since I don't own a PS3, these features are essentially useless, aren't they?

Anyone thinking about ugrading their PSP, please think twice. This is another pathetic attempt to lock homebrew out of the PSP by "adding" "increadible" "new" "features" (read "crap no one really wants and only 1% of the people will use"). In reality the upgrade adds little except new roadblocks. Just wait a couple of weeks till it is cracked then emulate the firmware (it's not like we got one of the 37 PS3s available in the US anyway).

PS you can downgrade 2.80 firmware (did it myself, on a test PSP). Just google it.

well kinda

its good that you can now play classic PSONE games...... but you have to have a PS3 to be able to get them and oh wait... europe hasnt got any PS3's yet.

infact without a PS3 a good chunk of what PSP v3.00 brings is useless.

sony are dangling the carrot infront of our faces :(

just installed 3.01 firmware, and I like. Its about time they put in that feature to disable UMD's from autorunning. That alone makes this firmware worth it. I was so annoyed by that.

As for that wireless thing, don't own a PS3 probably never will so could careless about that.
