Update adds PlayStation Plus service and more

With E3 having ended earlier this month, many fans are waiting for the hardware and games announced at the show to hit the market. Sony had some interesting announcements at E3 for its popular game console including new features, games, and hardware.

One of the interesting new features unveiled at this year's E3 was the new PlayStation Plus membership. The membership promises gamers access to exclusive download content and free games among other things. The PlayStation Plus subscription service is now available via a software update which became official today. The update brings the PS3 firmware to version 3.40.

Sony has posted an official blog outlining the major new features of the update. Sony included a Photo Gallery that adds network based photo sharing to the PS3. Using the new feature, users can browse photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Albums, and share photos with friends on the PlayStation Network.

The update also brings a Video Editor and Uploader to the XMB. Using these features, PS3 users can upload, edit, and save video on the PS3 directly to sites like Facebook or YouTube. After applying the update, users will be able to rate all content they previously purchased (and future purchases) with ratings of one to five stars.

The update also adds power saving features to the PS3. This feature lets the PS3 shut itself down automatically after sitting unused for two hours.

So true - same with the 360 (but the 360 can play them through Media Center).

The PS3 have a transcoder push the video to it too. Personally, I'd rather not bother.

I know! That is one of the only things I actually want it to do. Lol

While a little annoying that a conversion process is necessary, you just need to remux the mkv container to vob or something else. I've used the following tool since 2008, so it works great and can queue several jobs up.

Just a remultiplex, so no transcoding necessary. The quality is the exact same as the original mkv with video/audio bitstreams preserved.

I noticed the ps3 media server is able to do some inline remuxing for awhile now. Anybody have experience with this? Does it work for mkv's on the fly?

PS3 Media server is awesome. I use it to stream 1080P MKV files and it works flawlessly; DTS is even streamed. Quality is 99.9% perfect, as long as you use wired vs wireless, and have a decent CPU (C2D+, i7 recommended) otherwise you can't stream worth a shit.

I've been playing full HD MKVs using the ps3 media server and I don't see much of difference compared to the original, it works flawlessly even on a average PC!

Just demux and remux into a different container. Like avi.

Oooh, actually, I shouldn't have been so harsh and read the article before posting. The auto turn off after 2 hours thing will be great for the more senile gamers like myself. I've lost count of the amount of times that I have come down stairs in the morning to find that I've left my PS3 on all night.

Something for everyone here. YouTubes and facebooks for the young people and turning off when forgotten for the oldies like me. Now if only it could remind me where I put my glasses down last...

Shouldn't you do that everytime?

Probably, unless just writing a light hearted jokey comment. Truth be told, I still would have written my first comment, if only for shits and giggles :-D *thumbs up*

I guess I don't understand the auto power off feature. PS3 already had that? What's different about it now?

I believe it just had a "screen saver" mode before, with the system still staying powered up.

It did already have the auto-power off feature but you had to enable it manually. The update makes every PS3 set to auto-power off once 2hrs of idle time has been reached.

Most people never turned this feature on so this update is good, this will reduce the large handful of people who are always on no matter what time of day simply because they forget to hit the power switch.

Sorry, to clarify it sets the default to "On-2hr idle" instead of default "Off". You still have the ability to change this.

Browse the web without freezing the entire system.

I don't use the PS3 for browsing as the browser sucks, but I do use it for my porno downloads, & I hate sometimes, when you are downloading a vid or clip & the whole system freezes so I hope they fix that.

How about Firefox?

I think the PS3 has less browser-allocatable memory than current smartphones, so firefox is not an option :(

RE: Better Browser
By Bansaku on 6/29/2010 7:09:41 PM , Rating: 2
Ya, actually I can surf faster on my iPod touch, with less crashes. PS3 web browser is a joke! As it stands now, Safari is using 277MB of my memory, Firefox and Opera are not much better. There is a reason why Microsoft left out a web browser; because console browsing just plain sucks!

So true - even when I'm sitting infront of the PS3, I'll get up and go to a PC to quickly check something on the web.

I use firefox on my ps3 through linux (never installed the April 1st firmware). It works fine even with several plugins. It doesn't like more then a couple of tabs open though.
