The Sony PS3 Arc  (Source: VGChartz)
PlayStation 3 motion controller may or may not have a name

Since Sony first showed it off during E3 2009, the PlayStation 3 motion controller has been spoken about and promoted without an official name from the company.

Sending the rumor mill into overdrive, Sony recently registered the playstationarc.com domain, which has led to bloggers and gamers to believe the motion controller will officially be called Arc.  It's possible this is the product name of a different Sony project, with Sony declining to offer a public statement.

First expected for release this spring, Sony pushed back the motion-sensing controllers until at least fall 2010.  Despite the delay, Arc will compete directly with Natal, as the Microsoft-branded technology is expected in time for the holidays.

The Japanese electronics company plans to compete with the Nintendo Wiimote and Microsoft Natal during a time when console gamers are looking to use motion-based controllers.

Sony showed off the Torne recorder that has been engineered to allow owners to watch and record terrestrial broadcasts through the TV.  The accessory is USB-powered and connects into one of the console's USB port.  All recorded content can be saved directly to the PS3 or USB HDD.

Sony and Microsoft have upgraded their consoles to better keep up with the new demands from gamers.  Many console owners want their gaming device to double as a product that can browse the internet, view YouTube, Flickr and similar sites, and provide streaming content.

Ummm....how 'bout they finally make it PS2 compatible so I can retire the old guy, and save an input on my A/V receiver?

Sure if you have a PC you have the perfect PS2 emulator.

Uh, no! I use that myself, and it doesn't support a SHITLOAD of games..... Jak & Daxter to name one... the whole series infact.

Only on the older "brick" PS3s, not the newer slim ones. But there may be a hack out for it sometime down the road if Sony never offers a software emulation update. But as a brick PS3 owner, I've never understood playing old PS2 games any more than I've wanted to revisit my Nintendo 64 games.

It depends on the kind of games you like to play. I wouldn't go back and play a PS2 FPS, but I would absolutely play Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, or other story driven games. Hell, I still bring out emulators to play my favorite NES and SNES games. Some gamers like to replay some games, and I've loved not having to have my PS2 plugged into the TV to do it.

Aboslutely. I still play old PC games from way back in 1990 or even older. The graphics and sound effects may be horribly dated, but the games are still great to play.

Unfourtunately I bought my PS3 all of a month after they stripped PS2 support. Makes me a sad panda as I would love to be able to ditch the corded controllers and memory cards.

The original PS3 had a hardware EmotionEngine in it. Later versions did software emulation of the EmotionEngine. To reduce price they dropped PS2 game support altogether.

Just because they don't make a new PS3 Slim with PS2 game support doesn't mean they didn't support PS2 games for years with the PS3.

I liked it for that reason, b/c I still had a lot of PS2 games (Still do), and I mainly got it to be a movie player (busted DVD player,. it was the cheapest and most reasonable option for HD playback at the time)

but I'll admit, I barely play any PS2 games. still nice if you want some cheap, decent games though.

sure it's heavy and large, but IMO, looks a bit nicer than the slim. which to me looks a little cheap and plasticky.

I dont have any problem using PS3 to play PS2 games. but I dont really use it for that(ps2), cuz I have my PS2 right next to it.

yeah, the first couple of years PS2 games were supported, but right about the time Metal Gear Solid 4 was released PS2 support was removed from all future shipping systems. The MGS4 bundle was I think the last model that still supported PS2 games.

Mine is PS2 compatible (hardware). has 60gb HDD. plays BD flawlessly, and I've never had a problem with it in nearly 3 years.

best 500 bucks I ever spent.

Kinda confused on why expressing your love for a platform is here.. but.....OK.....

Personally PC, 360, PC, Wii all have their exclusive games which are great. If we all only had more time to play them!

The PS3 is nice, though it shows the artifacts of its wonky CPU design with graphics or performance in games that are occasionally not up to scratch compared to the 360. The Ghostbusters game comes to mind, for instance. A lot of the first-party games have been amazing, however, which makes up for it.

RE: PS3!
By killerroach on 1/26/2010 3:48:40 PM , Rating: 2
A lot of that comes from the nature of a lot of games by American developers being first designed around the 360 and then ported over to the PS3, leading to some weird issues (as the two consoles handle memory differently; the 360 has shared RAM, while the PS3 splits the same amount between CPU and GPU).

If the game was designed from the get-go with the PS3 in mind, the two are more or less equal, with the possibility of either one being slightly better depending on whether the graphics used more strongly rely on detailed textures (benefiting the 360), complex geometry (benefiting the PS3), or complex shaders (where it may vary depending on the shader code used).

lol I think the difficulty of memory management would be NOTHING compared to actually programming for the cell processor. A PPC general processing core with 7 SIMD processors, not the easiest thing to pick up and work with.

RE: PS3!
By Akrovah on 1/26/2010 4:32:07 PM , Rating: 2
True that but I think if they ever figure out how to truely maximize the use of those 7 (though I think only 6 are usable by developers) cores the PS3 could probably pump out some absolutely ground breking stuff.

Thats a pretty big IF though.

RE: PS3!
By grath on 1/26/2010 7:53:38 PM , Rating: 2
Not that big of an IF. A main reason that many of the PS3 exclusive or first-party developed games are so impressive is that have spent the effort to learn to program for the Cell properly. Sure theres still room for improvement, but I think theyre fairly well along the way toward "truly maximizing" the potential of the platform.

On the other hand, anything cross-platform basically excludes itself from efficiently using the Cell, as was said its typical to program for 360 then port to PS3, and to do it the other way round would likely be more expensive and not get past the decision makers who just want to push their product to market.

Just look at grand turismo 4. That's on the ps2, which is pretty amazing considering the dated hardware.

Its called a shitty port. PS3 exclusives are arguably the best looking console games out there. Uncharted 2 was absolutely gorgeous.

But yeah, if a game is cross-platform I buy it or my 360 because odds are it will look better, not to mention if its multiplayer and I want to play with more of my friends on XBL.
