Sony talks about downloadable games

Sony has set a cap of 500MB on downloadable games to be available through its online service. Given that Sony's PS3 comes standard with at least a 20GB hard drive, Sony feels that it can get away with larger game downloads. Microsoft, on the other hand, limits its Xbox Live Arcade games to 50MB -- just enough so that at least one game could fit onto a 64MB Xbox 360 Memory Card.

John Hight, director of external development at Sony Computer Entertainment in Santa Monica, is pushing for downloadable games to support 1080p, THX Dolby 5.1 sound and take full advantage of the SIXAXIS controller. One such game is flOw (see screenshot on the right). flOw is free-ranging game in which player can control a sea creature which floats around, eats other organisms and evolves before the player's eyes.

In his interview with FiringSquad, Hight also mentions that PS3 downloadable games can be transferred to as many as five PS3 systems.

However, there is still no word on a Sony equivalent to Microsoft's XNA Game Studio for hobbyists.

Does anyone actually use Xbox 360 memory cards? They're like $50 for 65MB, the harddrive is $100 for 20GB, much a better deal, IMO, even if still overpriced.

The 50MB limit is an arbitrary limit set by Microsoft. It could be raised if needed and I have no doubt it will if it proves too limiting.

I was thinking the same thing. I really wonder what percentage of 360 owners are limited to memory card storage.
