Eager PS3 fans deplete store inventories

Nikkei Keizai Shimbun reported in late October that Sony had to revise its launch numbers from 100,000 to 80,000 units for Japan. Problems with blue laser diodes was the most frequently cited reason for the production cut, but it looks as though Sony has been able to deliver above and beyond the 80,000 figure.

Sony managed to sell roughly 88,400 PS3s in the first two days of availability in Japan. According to Enterbrain, most stores in Japan have been completely depleted of inventory and are awaiting the second wave of the consoles.

Of the 88,400 units sold, around 62% were the more advanced 60GB version which also includes a multi-card reader and WiFi. US retailers are expected to receive an 80%/20% split of 60GB/20GB models.

Enterbrain also reported that the top-selling games for the PS3 so far have been Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight. Both titles have racked up sales of about 30,000 each in two days.

Eager US fans of the PS3 will have their big day on the 17th. For those of you who simply can't wait until then and want to see as much of the PS3 as possible now, you can check out DailyTech's tear-down of the PS3 or take a peek at the PS3's user guide.

We all know the only reason ps3 is selling out is every person is thinking of reselling for a huge rip off.

Its flying off the shelfs because it has become a rare item.

When it hits the US dont be suprised to see 50% of the consoless sold to show up on ebay at a cut throat mark up of 150% or more.

This is silly statement. PS3 would sell out even if it was illegal to sell it on e-bay. The people who would be buying these e-bay ripoffs would just be able to buy them from a store if they were smart enough to set up a pre-order properly. Remember the e-bay people still have to sell them to someone so the demand is there.

I hardly think the ONLY reason it is selling out is e-bay.

They are already up on eBay. The highest is 1500. There was one up Sunday for 3000 but they only had the receipt so they probably took it down. If I was going to get the console I would put it up on eBay too. Why would you? Make a quick buck. I can handle waiting a couple months until they are in stock again.

Ok rate me down again. I know that there are people who sell them on e-bay. Saying that the ONLY reason that they are selling out is because of people putting them up on e-bay is a stupid statement. The e-bay rip offs exist because demand is so high and supply is so low that people can sell them for crazy amounts. If the e-bay scenario did not exist the e-bay people would not have bought PS3s and those people who buy the consoles off of e-bay would just buy them from the store and it would be sold out anyway.

You mind telling me where someone said 720p or 1080i isn't actual HD? I also seem to remember the 360 having 1080p for games, should the devs choose to use it. Either way, I don't get your point. Also, who said the PS3 is moddable as hell? You can put a new HD in, ooooo... though this is a good idea I will admit, it doesn't make it moddable. The PS3 may be more advanced, but last I checked games look about the same on each console. It doesn't blow the 360 out of the water, and both have their places. With that said, I bet Nintendo sells more this holiday then both Sony and MS combined, just a prediction.

Everyone and their mom wants a PS3 - because they want it, not just because of the mark up you can make. Further, think about your logic: who are they reselling to? Other people who want to resell - no r-tard! To consumers who want to own the console! Derp!
Actually, he's not an r-tard. That's exactly who they are reslling to. I saw this happen with the XBOX 360, and even got in on it.

I bought a few XBOX 360s on eBay for around $1,500 and sold them all 24hrs later for $2,000+, the best one going for $2,800. The people who bought them from me where probably going to try to do the same thing. You can do this because of the way eBay works, in that it takes at least 24hrs to sell something, which is how long it takes you to get it shipped next day. Because of that, you can sell the item before you even have it. At some point the price crashes, the supply increases, and those people who were last to buy get fucked out of their money and lose a lot.

Watch what happens on launch day, and you'll see what I mean. They will probably start at around $2,000 and end around $2,500 to $3,000. By the time they are ended, they are already back on eBay again...and the person doens't even have the unit yet. This will happen again and again until the end of the week, and possibly longer. I suspect the price will go to at least $5k within the first 72hrs. At their peak, I saw XBOX 360s go for around $3,500 and some as high as $8k for an XBOX 360 with a simple mod that was nothing more than some blue paint, a window mod, and a bigger HDD. Probably cost whoever did it an extra $200 and 2hrs work, at most. PS3 is going to be the same thing, on crack.

With PS3, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some units for for close to $10k before Christmas rolls around. If you only make $35k a year and you can make close to 1/3rd of that in a week, why not quit your job?

I would have to question why anyone would immediately sell theirs launch day. Obviously that is the day with highest supply (for a short while, until next hardware wave). People who hold their PS3 until Dec 22 (or until next PS3 hardware wave comes out) will make most money.

Just think of how many rich exec daddies have tons of money and buy their kids everything. I can see them easily paying arm/leg for one of the few couple dozen held until christmas (especially considering rush delivery, which you of course charge extra for).

At least Wii has some exclusive Nintendo only titles..

Problem for Sony is about 75% of the launch titles are already on 360 and some are also being launched on Wii for those who don't have HD capable tv's.. thats good news

True, but exclusive titles don't mean so much to me - A good game is good no matter what format, exclusivity or type of machine it runs on ;)

I think Hydrofirex is both a fanboy (of the Sony / PC gaming varieties) and uneducated as far as to the console market and Sony's competition.

This thing BLOWS the 360 out of the water on every level. It's a more advanced piece of technology, that will double as a media PC and a Blue Ray player, as well as having actual HD capability for games... not to mention more processing power for future games and the ability to mod the hell out of it. Sony has won. And, thank the maker for them, because they needed it.

It does not blow the 360 "out of the water on every level." Even developers are saying that there is no actual advantage in going with the PS3 over the 360, and the Xbox 360 is even easier to produce games for. The 360 has "actual HD capability for games," and whatever made you think otherwise is fictitious (the game not being on a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc has nothing to do with its ability to be output in HD). Tell me Sony has won in a year or two, when you can actually back that statement up.

I think consoles are dumb. I think further, they are a huge rip-off. I'd take a PC any day of the week over a console.

Great, so if you're just going to flame and troll, don't post here.

P.S.

In another 6 months the X-box will look decidedly last-gen over the games and capabilities you'll see coming out of the PS3.</i<

Wow.

I sort of agree with your post..

MS's launch of 360 sold 62k in two days and was considered a failure.. but to be fair.. Sony 'might' of sold more if they had more.. but MS sold out of Xbox 360's that came with Blue Dragon recently in Japan..

But Iam a 360 fan.. 360 is only getting better ! !

It was considered a failure because of the amount of consoles available at launch. Blue Dragon sells out b/c it's developed by the creator of Final Fantasy series.
If xbox360 can come up with more games like that it'll probably do better in Japan.

My post does address they could've sold more if they had more.

But my whole point of saying maybe it wasn't that great is in JAPAN, Sony's name means alot more.. with all the supposed Hype of Bluray, The PS3 I thought would've sold all 80K+ Units the 1st days.. I mean population of 128 million.. 80k thousand would be maybe around SIX Hundredths of ONE PERCENT of the population.

I think Nintendo's launch will make PS3's looks like amatuer night

RE: They shouldnt be proud of this
By santa590 on 11/13/2006 12:56:35 PM , Rating: 2
Actually it's the 10,000 limited edition Blue Dragon Xbox 360 bundles that was sold out. The total sells of Xbox 360 in Japan so far is around 400,000(may be less). I do predict Blue Dragon will boost sells, but not dramatically.

If Sony can keep it's promise of producing 100,000 PS3 each week, then there is a high possibility that it will pass the Xbox 360 by the end of this year. Kind of shame on MS that they didn't take advantage.

You jerk you. You think the equvalent of $50M US sales in two days stinks. I don't know what your revenue projections for the PS3 should be but a 62/38 sales ratio plus a total sell out of all the units equals success to me. Get real. You hater you.

Two days?
By jon1003 on 11/13/2006 4:08:57 PM , Rating: 2
I don't understand why it took 2 days. You mean there were actually stores with unsold units on the second day? That's kind of unbelievable given the circumstances. The only reason I can think of were some shipments were still en-route to stores on the first day, so they were available for sale the second day.

It's in danish for those who read "Gibberish", but the following is a translation of part of it:

"Forretningerne i Japan kunne melde alt udsolgt blot få timer efter, at salget af PS3 lørdag havde verdenspremiere i Japan."

In english:

"The shops in Japan had sold out just a few HOURS after the sale of PS3 had World premiere in Japan."

I can play with my Wii (lol) or 360 or my 8800GTX SLI while I wait for PS3 to become a 'walk in and pick it up' item.

The hysteria around the launch of a new console has never failed to amuse me.

"Dude I was the first to get a PS3, now I can play Toshinden 16 and Ridge Racer 20 all year while I wait for the real games to come out."

By CascadingDarkness on 11/13/2006 7:09:49 PM , Rating: 2
They are crazy. I was one of 200 people in Walmart waiting for PS2 launch. They intelligently had no line and weren't announcing where the line would start until midnight. Huge mistake.

Midnight comes around and you have 200 people running for aisle 4 (what manager on duty chose I guess). Needless to say this guys must not have thought this through because there was hundreds of dollars of damage to displays as people pushed to get one of 22 consoles.

Me and my bro however took the smart approach (by some standards) walked out and drove to Target to wait for their 8am opening. After being first in line a manager showed up and gave us some reservation tickets at 3 am and said "go home and get some sleep".

Morning came and I was playing my new PS2 after a quick stop at Target.

Was it crazy? Yes, but it was a lot of fun just getting the console too. We sat in line with a dozen guys and traded stories. It's not all about sweaty smelly gamers and screaming.

If you read the Asia news, a lot of people who lined up were chinese people getting paid to get the console for someone who resells them via Web auction for a ridiculously high price. In fact, when the interviewers tried to talk to them, they couldn't speak Japanese at all.

Not to mention, those chinese people were the ones who only bought the console itself and no sofware or accessories whatsoever.

While I have no grudge on this, I wonder just how many people are viewing the PS3 as a profit maker, not as an entertainment system as it was originally meant to.

And I guess Sony was okay with it, seeing that they were actually smiling and being satisfied at the huge line. Not that it's their fault for turning out like this.....they should have expected this, too.

While it's great for Sony that they sold them all, it doesn't really tell us much. I would expect the initial shipments to sell out in Japan, as sure as I expect the 400k units to sell out in US quickly. There are at least 400k people in the US and 80k in Japan that were/are eagerly awaiting PS3, regardless of the delays and/or negative press. We won't really know of PS3s success until we see some long-term sales figures. Despite the higher price, I think that the market is big enough and rich enough to match the initial sales pace of the PS2. I think it's the long-term sales that may suffer if Sony can't get PS3 below $250 by year 3.
