Socket F and DDR2 pushed back
Our previous coverage of AMD’s Socket F Opteron stated the new revision F Opteron processors would arrive August 1st, 2006. It appears AMD has pushed back the release date of revision F Opteron processors to August 15th, 2006. We weren’t able to obtain anything showing the official reason for the delays but rumors have been rampant. One of the reasons for the delay is because of the processor sockets, which are made by Foxconn. AMD Socket F processors use a pin-less land-grid-array layout similar to Intel’s Socket T or more commonly known as LGA775.
Problematic land-grid-array sockets are nothing new as there were also problems with the initial batch of Intel LGA775 sockets and longevity. We can only speculate motherboard manufacturers are having the same issues with AMD’s Socket F, especially with its 1,207 pins.
Motherboard volume is another issue too. There simply aren’t enough motherboards available in the channel for an official hard launch yet. Distributors were supposed to receive Opteron revision F processors two weeks ago for an August 1st, 2006 launch. It’s kind of hard to launch a processor when motherboards aren’t available for purchase.
Nevertheless, problems or not the official launch date has been pushed back to August 15th, 2006, and pricing for the processors has already been announced.
