Computer glitch sets the internet ablaze as gamers comb stores

It was chaos on the virtual streets as word hit that Toys R Us was selling copies of the hotly-anticipated Bioshock a full six days ahead of its August 21 street date. Members of 2K Games' official forums linked early images of the game in its' packaging, sitting atop an Xbox 360 Elite with Madden '08.

Initially, gamers thought 2K had switched the release date to today, with speculation that the title was available for purchase throughout the country. Forums around the Internet went wild at the dearth of information available, hunting for lucky players on Xbox live. One such was found soon after initial word broke, who'd already earned several achievements and appears to be making good progress through the game--his gamercard is shown here but I've obscured personal information in the interest of preserving his tranquility.

Unfortunately, hopes were dashed as official word came in that the release date had not been changed, and that Toys R Us had taken the title back off their shelves. Brendon Lindsey of GamerNode.com says, "I just got off the phone with one of the PR guys over at 2K. According to him, this whole situation was just a broken street date by some Toys R Us employees who didn't know Bioshock had a street date (or didn't care), and the resulting snowball effect that caused. At this point 2K isn't entirely sure why so many Toys R Us stores went and sold the game early ("It's not like street dates are a new concept"), but they are going to look into it once they put out this fire."

It would seem the mix-up was caused by the lack of a street date in Toys R Us' computers, which would explain the wide geographic area of the reports. All the other major retailers still maintained a street date of August 21, and now the only available copies of the game seem to be on EBay, with one such auction already at $140 with 15 hours still left.

In the meantime, I have plenty of other great games to keep me busy. What's another six days?

"Forever" is a long time.. In fact, it's enough time for you to re-read the article to see that you would be wasting more of it.. ;-)

First off, stupid TRU. They are gonna face some hefty fines for this mistake.

Second, I downloaded the demo on Live (1.3GB) and played through it a couple times. Overall what I found was the typical storyline of "everything is going to hell in a handbasket and you just arrived in time to do something about it, but you don't know what's going on". What the game does beyond that is what I think will set it apart.

Personally, I'm fascinated with the architecture of the period, so the game is visually appealing to me. Add to that the fact that it takes place in a sprawling underwater city with a surreal sci-fi/supernatural plot, it becomes even more interesting. What this demo gave me were flashbacks to the first time I played Half-Life, and that's a very good thing.

I'm excited to get my hands on the real game. The demo only lets you play with a couple special abilities and weapons, let's you do a little hacking (which seems trivial at best) and gives you a slight introduction to some sort of monetary system. Eating random foods and drinks have varying effects, so it will be interesting to see if they take it further than what the demo provided.

The graphics are stunning, but not without a flaw or two (no self-cast shadow, a couple really low-res textures) and the audio is exceptionally crisp although due to either emotional effect or poor positioning it is really hard to judge where some sounds are coming from. Controls are typical and in reality the Plasmids (psychic powers) are basically just guns assigned to a different button and represented by a hand instead of a weapon... dual-wielding of sorts. What's unique are the weapon combos, but it doesn't appear that theres any real combo system per se.

I work for TRU and this level of incompetence does not surprise me.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a PR stunt to steal some of EA's thunder by releasing this game early. Remember, 2K and EA are bitter rivals in the sports genre. Moreover, EA snatched up the NFL license (and is looking at the NBA and NHL), thereby cutting 2K out of some serious revenues.
