Beware the new Obama malware that is spreading across the Web!

Security experts have warned that hackers are using President-elect Barack Obama's White House victory to help spread a new Trojan horse designed to steal passwords and other personal information. Cybercriminals have several different tactics they are using to help harvest personal information that can lead to identity theft.

One such method is to send out e-mails with a link to his victory speech, but rather than have the Adobe Flash video and necessary plug-ins, it's actually a malware executable file.  Other internet users have been receiving e-mails that have attached .exe files that have been downloaded to harvest personal information.

Because the internet has become a powerful campaign tool used by both President-elect Obama and Sen. John McCain, people let their guards down and clicked on links in e-mails they thought were from the candidate's campaign.

"The hackers are taking advantage of Obama-mania," said Graham Cluley, Sophos Labs senior technology consultant.

Although the attacks have originated from several different locations across the world, it seems that Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, is one of the hotbeds for the Obama-themed malware.  Even though more people will learn about the malware threat, security experts warn the Obama-themed malware will continue to spread in the next few months.

Security maker SophosLabs has published examples of several different types of malware spam attacks it has come across since Tuesday.

For example, the malware SophosLabs has encountered has a rootkit to better conceal itself, a backdoor, password searcher, and can monitor both keyboard strokes and mouse inputs, while also taking screenshots.

"My guess is that this is far from the last example we will see of Barack Obama's name and image being abused by malware authors in their greed to infect Internet users," the blog on the SophosLab web site says.

In order to click a .exe movie file. Seriously.

I have to agree on that. It's actually very simple to have good security on the internet:

Don't click on anything You haven't specifically requested!!

By nosfe on 11/7/2008 11:57:44 AM , Rating: 2
you have no idea how many do that because they look at the icon and not the extension

By Inkjammer on 11/7/2008 2:27:08 PM , Rating: 4
By default, Windows XP and Vista both hide extensions for known file types. So if somebody were to name a file obama_victory.jpg.exe then Windows would only show the file as obama_victory.jpg. It'd hide the extension because it's a "known file type".

Given that, it can be hard to fault users of lesser skill.

By Alareth on 11/7/2008 2:56:41 PM , Rating: 5
I've always felt that hiding extentions was one of the stupidest default settings in history and it one of the very first things I fix.

By HrilL on 11/7/2008 8:31:30 PM , Rating: 2
Too bad most end users when rename if you fixed it for them won't be able to open their files because they'll delete the extension as well. So imo Microsoft did the right thing in hiding them because people are just too damn dumb.

By Captain Orgazmo on 11/8/2008 1:12:09 PM , Rating: 3
Vista by default only renames the file name, not the extension, even when extensions are shown. It even warns you when you try to change the extension of a file.

By inighthawki on 11/7/2008 11:33:13 PM , Rating: 2
Ive never known the email client to hide the extension. So when they download it, they should notice when it says "Do you want to download "Obama_image.jpg.exe"

Well when the alternative picks a woman who can't name the countries in NAFTA as a running mate, I don't see how anyone sane could vote for anyone other than a guy with no experience or accomplishments other than two books he wrote...about himself.

I guess we have another disgruntled McCain supporter on our hands, yes?

More experience meaning that she has been Governor of of a very sparsely populated state for 1.5 years, can see Russia from her front porch, and appointed all of her high school buddies to state jobs?
She has lots of experience, mostly in being a complete ditz whose addition to the McCain ticket was a slap in the face to real conservatives everywhere.

Didn't Alaska just "elect" a guy who was 21% behind the polls before election? Not to mention he was just convicted of a felony? Oh the humanity.

Don't argue with him! He's got the most aggressive 49% of America backing him.

Yeah, we totally missed the boat. We had the opportunity to elect a guy who crashed 4 fighter jets, graduated next to last in flight school but was able to fly because his daddy was an admiral, and then got shot down over Vietnam. We had the opportunity to elect a guy who owns more houses than he could remember without his accountant handy, yet is still in touch with the majority of Americans... We had the opportunity to elect a VP who didn't even know that Africa was a continent, and lacked basic 5th grade level knowledge of American civics...

Yeah, that takes quite a high stupidity threshold to not elect those people...

I, for one, think all of this GOP QQ is freakin hilarious. My aunt in law actually bawled for hours because Obama won, she truly believes that Obama is the anti-christ. She even had a nightmare that everyone was taken during the ensuing rapture besides her..

I have to jump in on one comment as the son of a former Naval Aviator..

quote:
We had the opportunity to elect a guy who crashed 4 fighter jets

Are you referring to the Forrestal incident? I've heard people say that McCain started that chain reaction and just want to know where you get that information from. I know about the Forrestal accident and how it occurred (McCain had nothing to do with it).

quote:
graduated next to last in flight school but was able to fly because his daddy was an admiral

Even graduating dead LAST at the US Naval Academy is an accomplishment that 99.999% of Americans can not claim. Regarding aircraft carrier qualification, daddy's signature doesn't give him the sign off by the commanding officer of the training squadron. Do you honestly think that CO of McCain's training wing for carrier qualification on the A-4 would put his own career at stake signing off someone not qualified to fly off and land ON carriers?

Regarding the election, I'm glad Democrats are going to have full run of Washington for a while. Let's see what they can do. I'll bet they won't be so liberal and far left as they made their electorate believe this year. There are a lot of moderates out there that put Democrats in congress in 2006 because they ran on a moderate platform. We shall see what the next four years beholds.

You sir are a complete moron.

You are blaming him for getting shot down?? Or are you saying he was a bad pilot because he got shot down? Either way you have no clue about what you are talking about.

Have you ever flown a plane? Till you have stop repeating what mommy and daddy tell you.

By sgw2n5 on 11/7/2008 7:53:38 PM , Rating: 2
You obviously have access to the interwebs... learn how to work the google and find out the information you need. Silly butt-hurt republicans after this election...

I was not blaming McCain for getting himself shot down, just pointing out that he was an incompetent fighter pilot based upon his flight record (4 different crashes) before he was shot down over 'nam., and yes, he wouldn't have been allowed to look at a plane after his 1st crash if not for his dad (and grandpa) being in the position they we in at the time.

My parents think McCain used to be the best thing since sliced bread btw, though they detested that ditz running mate of his.

Maybe you should take your own advice and use Google. He had 3 "crashes".

When 52.6% of the popular vote went to a man with zero leadership experience, zero military experience, and zero idea of what he is doing...

Buckle down boys and girls, we are due for a massive depression...

quote:
From the AP: Obama stressed the need to extend unemployment benefits, stimulate job growth and reduce the number of foreclosures, and he pressed for Congress to pass a new stimulus package "sooner rather than later."

His plans are already talking about massive spending INCREASES to pay lazy people to not work (aka unemployment benefit increases), to pay off or decrease people's mortgages to prevent foreclosure (when the buyers are partially to blame for getting their credit overextended, and his Democrat Congressional cronies caused the other half of it), spend more money on day labor without actually creating new and long term jobs (aka stimulate job growth)... AND spend more of our taxpayer money towards another stimulus package (likely in the form of KFC gift certificates lol)...

Yet where is there talk of spending CUTS? There are none because he was a part of the worst (Democrat controlled) Congress in the past several decades.

Now countries and terrorists are already bullying him around, I believe he will fold like an origami chicken.

Screwball and others, don't bother. DailyTech is filled with liberals who can't see past their nose on real issues. They're afraid of the 2nd amendment, afraid of having a good defensive system that can protect us from the threats we face in the world. For instance, not weaponizing space, China and Russia are definately going to do this. It's ridiculous to say "we won't compete" even if it means the countries who disagree with democracy will have this technology to sell to whoever can afford to use it which includes terrorists who have funding from oil producers.

For a very long time DT has been extremely left wing in its readership and every conservative view is looked upon as being crazy. It's very sad when you're crazy for wanting to be able to buy a firearm for self defense when there are thousands, perhaps millions of criminals who could still commit armed robbery even if all guns were completely banned. You see, they don't give a damn about laws obviously and acquire guns illegally anyhow. It's sad when you believe that the military is vital to protect our interests, yet are regarded as an idiot who wants to start fights.

So, we have people who watch CNN and hear change and say "ok sure" without doing any research of their own. They're also the ones who call you a racist when you ask questions about someone's past. Obama would fail the CIA and other federal agencies' background checks, but i suppose that doesn't matter because he's the magic ATM machine who will give everyone a free check just for sitting at home.

Crazy

Contrary to what you have been lead to believe, the evil liberals aren't going to take your precious guns away. You have fallen prey to propaganda.

What would make you think that the left is afraid of having a strong national defense? That's just idiotic.

I think you may be the one who "can't see past their nose on issues." Just keep eating the retarded propaganda that fox news and rush are spoon feeding you, it is obviously working...

It won't be for lack of trying. They sure act like they want to.

"We're eliminating 17 specific assault weapons" - http://www.barackobama.com/factcheck/2007/12/11/fa...

You may think that's fine and dandy (and I might too) but for someone who likes collecting "assault weapons" for hobbies or defense (post some hypothetical societal breakdown) that quote makes it quite clear that Obama does in fact intend to take his precious guns away and it's willful ignorance or deliberate dissembling on your part to claim otherwise.

The simplest hotfix is clearly Fairtax.exe which would effectively o/c the economy by roughly 20%, enabling great gains for all brackets: budget, mid-range, and enthusiast. It would also eliminate all of the buggy IRS code.

How could you get infected by viruses a couple of years ago? I know that everybody I knew was paranoid about even loading up the web browser after 9 o clock at night in case they got swarmed by 1000 viruses. Then again, it was Internet Explorer...

But really. Have viruses become more boring? They only seem to spread through attachments and stuff now. I don't know how I kept on getting the MSBlaster virus, I'd have Mcafee and Norton installed and every time I reformatted it would infect me again as soon as I got everything set up.

I have Kaspersky now, works like a charm.

Oh, please. This is news because it involves politics and therefore you'll get a load of page hits from it. It's like posting an article about Apple. This is not "news" since this type of malware has been around for many years. I've got no issue with such articles being posted but this isn't some sort of civic duty.
