OCZ's Trifecta is the all-in-one media solution

When it comes to flash memory, many companies are looking for a way to break from the pack and offer something innovative and useful to consumers. OCZ Technology is definitely thinking outside of the box with its new Trifecta Secure Digital card series.

The Trifecta is composed of microSD card which plugs into a standard Secure Digital interface/reader. In essence, it can be used as a microSD card with a cell phone or GPS device or as a Secure Digital card in a digital camera or MP3 player. The component that completes the "trifecta" is the integrated USB connector which allows you to transfer data by plugging the device into your PC or Mac.

"Today’s latest generation of cell phones possess superior multimedia features including integrated cameras and the ability to play MP3s," said Alex Mei, VP of Marketing, OCZ Technology Group. "With more and more mobile phones and consumer devices making use of microSD, the Trifecta’s unique 3-in-1 design allows consumers to take full advantage of their handset’s features, as well as give them the flexibility to use microSD in their other devices, and the freedom to access their data without the use of a reader."

The OCZ Trifecta is available now in 1GB and 2GB capacities. Write speeds are listed at 66x and the cards come with a 5-year warranty.

I can see a problem

What happens if you stick the unit in as SD slot and the USB cover gets stuck? That could be a problem.....

Or better... a device connected to the SD port and another device connected to the USB port at the same time.

You know, the dumb people are brilliant doing dumb things.

i don't get it. what is the problem with this device? if you plug it in an usb port it appears as a any other mass storage device, does it not?

if flash memory makers made their cards usb compatible in the first place we wouldn't have had those 100-in-1 memory readers. a market created entirely from greedy companies that couldn't stop making up new standards.

But an SD card sticks in the other way. The notched end goes first. The USB cover would be on the outside. There's no way the USB cover could get stuck inside an SD slot.

That's pretty awesome.

Took me a while to see how it all works but its pretty smart, depending on how the price compares to USB flash drives, there would be no reason to get a regular 1 or 2GB USB flash drive when you can just buy this instead.

USB drives are much more durable and at least double the speed of SD cards. Speed on a 66x is less than 10MB/s read, less than 6MB/s write. USB drives have the capacity for rates that are over 30MB/s read and over 25MB/s write.

But you're right in that the price will have the largest impact on whether or not consumers will opt for it. They would have made out if they had named it the Triforce =)

For what it's worth, I have one of their "Rally" dual channel memory USB drives and couldn't be happier with it. I've really come to like some of the unique and first to market products that OCZ has released.

Not really needed

While this sounds nifty at first, why not just connect to your phone/mp3 player with a usb cable?
The nokia software allows you to browse the sd card and upload/download at will.

I have a Cingular 3125 which uses a microSD card.

For whatever reason, the transfer rates through the USB sync cable are crazy slow compared to using the card with a USB card reader instead.

If your phone comes with a dated USB 1.1 version, thats going to test your patience....

Rebranding
By ninjit on 4/2/2007 3:53:44 AM , Rating: 2
A-Data have had this out for a few months now
http://www.adata.com.tw/adata_en/product_show.php?...
http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/12/08/a.data.micr...

The OCZ version looks slightly different, but I'm pretty sure A-Data patented their design, so I'm guessing this a modified card they are producing for OCZ to rebadge as their own.

On the subject of rebranding, there was a news bit earlier about an OCZ mouse that was an obvious rebranding of some other product. Is the OCZ brand name really that strong, that they expect to simply sell the same product at premium?

I think you're right in that it's just a rebranding, I've bought the Adata SD/USB cards and they work fine. However there's no denying that OCZ is a stronger brand name than 'Adata' and it definitely seems to be one that people will pay money for.

Hmm why not dual-slot Flash

I believe USB ports share one connection to the Southbridge. The maximum any assortment of USB devices will transfer is about 37MB/s, which is a limitation of USB and the Southbridge of a motherboard.

pretty rad!

as long as it doesn't cost more than say 5-10$ more for the same sized media without the extra features, i'm in! no more having to plug in my camera with a usb cable, no more having to buy a media reader, sweet
