Nokia X3 in five colors  (Source: Nokia)

Nokia X3 up close  (Source: Nokia)
X3 won't come to the U.S. to start

Nokia is the largest mobile phone and smartphone maker in the world, despite the fact that other players like Apple, RIM, and Google hog all the glory in the smartphone arena. Nokia has announced the launch of its latest mobile device called the X3 Touch and Type.

The big feature of the X3 is that it combines the traditional 12-button keypad common on many phones with a touchscreen. That little touchscreen is a 2.4-inch unit and users can use the screen for games and other productivity apps while still having a keypad.

Nokia's Mary Mcdowell said, "Our research tells us consumers who have invested years in becoming fast one-handed, one-thumb texters want to maintain their speedy edge for SMS, chat and instant messaging – yet enjoy the benefits of touch as well."

The X3 is a thin device measuring in at 9.6mm x 106mm x 48mm and weighing in at 78g. The phone has a brushed aluminum exterior and will be offered in five different colors. The X3 also supports four voice bands, 3G HSPA, and has Wi-Fi connectivity. Other features include a music player, FM tuner, and a camera that shoots still shots and video. The resolution of that camera is 5-megapixels, much less than the N8's 12-megapixel resolution.

Nokia has set the X3 up to cater to the social networking fan and to those who like to keep in touch with all manner of messaging options. There are apps loaded for Twitter and Facebook and the phone can connect to the Ovi Store to download other apps. There are keys on the phone dedicated to the music player and messaging. Storage for music and other data is done to a microSD card of up to 16GB.

Nokia will bundle the phone with Ovi Music Unlimited in select markets. The phone will cost €125 ($160 USD) not counting any taxes and subsidies offered by carriers. The initial launch markets for the X3 will include China, Ireland & UK, Russia, Australia & New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Spain & Portugal, France, Mexico and Saudi & Yemen.

Nokia will launch the X3 in other countries later.

do you use it for games? GPS? emails? facebook? twitter? web browsing? i bet you dont, because even if though three year old phones could do this, they dont do it as efficiently as todays phones. bar email.

You've had your phone for 3 years and none of the current free phones offered with a new contract are better then it? You are paying for a phone subsidy if you use it or not. Your bill doesn't go down because your two years are up. All not getting a new phone buys you is the ability to switch carriers at any time without playing an ETF. Have you switched carriers? Do you plan to in the next year?

Speak for yourself, but when my contract expires, my plan's price is cut in half, and i can terminate the contract within 30 days, once i select a new handset, my bill goes back to the standard amaount.

My cell is a phone - no email, no gps, no nothing.
My point is you are WAY too connected.
And there is no need for a new cell every year!
I see people all the time going for walks with their cell.
That's wrong. You go on a walk to GET AWAY from the cell and RELAX, enjoy NATURE.
Heard of that, nature.

And yea, I'm not paying a $300 fee to get out of a 2 year contract, or paying $100 or more for a cell!

If you think you need a cell that bad perhaps your priorities are messed up!

This phone will be aimed at Pay as You Go users in Europe (eg not tied to a service plan).

I think it will go down very well for those people who still want a phone that is 'Just a phone' but with the option of showing what games / apps can do which Nokia hope will tempt people into buying the next high end phones.

If this phone cost $100 or less, then I'd probably get one. I don't want a service plan. I had one in Germany and hated it. Paying 30 Euro a month for 100 minutes, while only using like 10 mins a month.

Now on a pay as you go Korean phone. The Koreans suck. They make your minutes expire every month and they don't roll over. Buying 10000 won worth of minutes and using maybe half that. Yet still being forced to do it again the next month. They need to increase that number to like a 6 month expiration date.

My Japanese Softbank pay as you go phone at least expires after 3 months.

This form factor is nothing new as SonyEricsson were using it for a while on their older Symbian smartphones before abandoning it for more standard form factors.

Phones for grandma
By BushStar on 8/19/2010 9:46:32 AM , Rating: 2
My mum would be interested in this phone, but why are we interested?

I'm pretty sure the majority of Daily Tech users are not interested in cool phones for grandma. When I get rated down to 0 I'll know I'm wrong.

If there is a phone with a 720P touch screen and no bezel then please cover it.
