It fold, it flips... but does it blend?

If you're tired of all the Ultrabook announcements today, I'm sorry to say that the announcements will keep coming for the rest of the week. The good news, however, is that we've got a unique notebook to talk about today that strays far away from the traditional "open and close" of traditional notebooks.

 
Lenovo today announced its IdeaPad YOGA notebook which features a 360 degrees dual-hinge design that allows it to open like a traditional notebook, then flip the screen 360 degrees backwards to turn the device into a tablet (the back of the screen can fold flat with the back bottom of the notebook). When it tablet mode, users have full control over the IdeaPad YOGA's 13.1-inch touch screen (1600x900), which allows 10-point capacity touch. We're hoping that the keyboard is disable in this mode to prevent keypresses from being regiestered. It can also be used in "tent" mode in which the device is propped up on a desk.
 
The 3.1-pound IdeaPad YOGA is powered by Intel Core processor, supports up to 8GB of RAM, and up to a 256GB SSD. The notebook is designed to take full advantage of Windows 8 (the prototypes shown at CES were running Microsoft's next generation operating system).

 
As the notebook is built around Windows 8, it won't be launch until the boys from Redmond roll out their next generation flagship consumer operating system.

Lenovo has a history of making converitible laptops/tablets. This is a very nice step up in design over what was left over from IBM's long lasting designs.

Why didn't they design the screen to fold over the keyboard. I can't see a single reason why you would want your keys getting scuffed up if you lay this thing down on your seat tray or kitchen table.

I was thinking the same thing, it seems like a great way for your keyboard to get scuffed, dirty, or damaged. It should included some sort of cover to put over the keys.

Tablet sucks when it comes to ergo. Those thin sexy iPads are only good to look at, but holding them for hours is a pain.

And holding a laptop for hours would be easier. Ihave had no problems getting comfortable with my Asus Prime and playing Jellt Defense or watching a Netflix movie for over an hour. They were never designed to be workstations.

I guess this is where the IdeaPad Yoga would make sense. Just flip the screen over and treat it as a tablet without having to dock and undock the keyboard. This could work if it's light enough.

It would be great if they could include an ARM chip and run on Android for basic tablet use and be able to boot into Windows when the task calls for it.

Why wait

Waiting for Windows 8 is a mistake, a final version will probably come only at the very end of the year.
In the mean time, what do we run next month's public beta on?
Plus, this thing does have a stylus... right? Provided you have a stylus, there's nothing bad about Windows 7 on tablets. I've been perfectly happy with it since early beta on a M912X netbook tablet, then on a TM2.
And if they are stupid enough to launch this without an active digitizer, they deserve the flop that they will get.

I am guessing (hoping) that this tablet will use an Ivy Bridge CPU, hopefully with the better GPU option. That isn't available immediately, so it is understandable if they make us wait a bit.
But waiting any bit more after the Ivy Bridge CPUs are available will likely cost them my sale. I'll go for a Brazos or another Ivy Bridge tablet that launches earlier.




Thinkpads

Those are some nice laptops but most know that Lenovo's IdeaPads don't quite measure up to the ThinkPad. I hope there are some interesting things to come in that segment.

Still rockin' my T60p with the useful 4:3 screen.

This seems like a neat idea, but a 3.1 pound tablet is a bit on the heavy side for reading books and doing other tablet-like things.

Also, I would have preferred a flip-around hinge so the keyboard and touchpad would be protected. I'm guessing that a design like that would be both heavier and thicker.

I'll reserve judgement until it comes out, but I have feeling this looks cooler than it functions.
