The "Nokiaberry"
Nokia is set to release a new mobile phone this month under the E-series moniker targeted at business users. Will this upcoming Symbian smartphone become a Blackberry replacement?

As reported in our previous article, RIM plans to introduce a patch to allow customer's Blackberrys to continue operating normally, however some analysts have begun to question Blackberry's patent workaround. Due to all of the commotion, business users everywhere have started to look for a new solution. Nokia hopes to garner Blackberry and non-Blackberry customers alike with their latest business phone: the E61, rumored to be released this month in Europe and Asia.

The Series 60 smartphone operates in the GSM850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA2100 networks and includes built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and support for VoIP. Other features include a vivid 16 million color screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, 75MB of internal memory w/external miniSD card slot, support for multiple mobile email clients like BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Mobile Mail, Seven Always-On Mail, and Visto Mobile, full attachment handling, and editing functions (document, spreadsheet and presentation). You can even send and receive emails while on a phone call. Look for a price tag of around $500 to round off this laundry list of features.

Its not the device, its the software!

It really does not matter how cool the device looks or even how well it works. It is all about the back end software. If you have ever struggled with any of the non BB solutions, you know that nothing works as well as the BES for integration with corporate email. If you are just a pop mail user, these are probably great devices. But if you are hooking to exchange or domino, its an entirely different story.

True, but with windows mobile 5 and Microsoft working on email push (with the motorolla and other mobile 5 phones), blackberry is going to have some strong competition soon regardless of the results of the patent case. Obviosly that wont help with this as symbian doesnt have anythign comparable (at least that I know of), but for the treo700, HP's new phone, the xv6700, the Q... they will all offer some interesting alternatives to blackberry within the next few months.

MS already has push technology with Exchange Server 2003 don't they? Thought I remembered checking it out at my last job...

yeah, looking at all three though, it appears that Nokia has the best looking one, IMO. close race though between the Moto and the Nokia.

I agree that the Nokia E61 isn't "late-breaking" news as it was announced in a Nokia PR dated 10/05 (http://www.nokiausa.com/about/newsroom/article/1,1...). However, rumors have spread that it's release date could be this month hence the article.

I think Sony-Ericsson looks best of all - really pocketable, not much larger than typical phone, touch screen with res as Motorola, no MS shit. Cool and sleek. My bet :)

what about moto?

I had been a BB user and since switched to Goodlink when I changed job. The Goodlink push service is every bit as good as and as reliable as BB. I get email alerts on my Treo before the email shows up my Outlook even if I am sitting in the office.

Can't say a lot of good thing about the Palm SW but nothing wrong about GL.
