Nokia announces its cheapest 3G handset to date

Nokia has unveiled three new mobile phones that are all aimed at emerging markets. The three new models include the Nokia 2730 Classic, 2720 Fold, and the Nokia 7020. EWeek reports that the 2730 is the cheapest Nokia 3G phone the company has ever produced. In addition to 3G connectivity, the handset also offers a 2-inch QVGA display, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and stereo FM tuner.

The handset offers Ovi Mail, which Nokia claims can be set up in three steps without the need to download any software. Nokia provides a free email address that features anti-virus and Spam protection. The handsets contacts database can hold 1,000 contacts. Nokia claims the phone can be on standby for 17 days and offers 3.3 hours of WCDMA talk time. The headset will retail for $108 and launch in Q3 2009.

The 2720 Fold also includes Ovi Mail and a battery good for 18 days on standby and 5 hours of talk time. The handset features an FM radio tuner, can record FM broadcasts, and offers MMS messages, Bluetooth, and MP3 ring tones. The 2720 will ship in Q3 2009 for $75.

The Nokia 7020 is a clamshell handset like the 2720 Fold and offers some of the same features. The device offers a 2-megapixel camera and has lights to make the phone stand out. The device offers messaging and access to social networks and will ship in Q4 2009 for $124.

Nokia's Alex Lambeek said, "With our longstanding commitment to emerging markets, a Nokia customer can be confident that any product we offer meets a strict and consistent set of high-quality standards. This is particularly important in markets where technical assistance and repair shops are not easily accessible."

Nokia reported a massive 90% decline in profits for Q1 2009.

I agree. My old Nokia was cheap and had all the features it could have at its time.

Emerging Markets

Emerging Markets means roughly "poor" or "third world" countries.

$100+ handsets are still way too expensive. That's several month's salary in these "emerging markets". Maybe a business will be able to afford them, but not the average citizen.
