ZombiU fails to come close to profitability

If you're a gamer who owns a Nintendo Wii U, you may have played the popular game title from Ubisoft called ZombiU. That game has been one of the best-selling titles available since the launch of Nintendo's latest game console, the Wii U. Despite its popularity, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has unequivocally stated that there will be no sequel to ZombiU.

The reason there will be no sequel is simple and clear; ZombiU was not even close to be being profitable. Yves Guillemot, Chairman and CEO of Ubisoft also stated that because of the poor performance of ZombiU, Ubisoft decided to make Rayman Legends a multiple-platform game.

"We must find a way to ensure the creativity of those games could have a big enough audience," Guillemot added. "We hope it will take off. At the moment, we've said 'let's do through Christmas and see where we are from there.'"

Another big reason for poor performance and availability of some games for the Nintendo Wii U is the lack of significant multiplayer penetration. This is why EA says that its top games such as Madden NFL won't appear on Nintendo's game console this year.

"The lack of online engagement that we see on Wii U [is troubling]," says EA's Peter Moore. "It's so integral to what we do. They're so small it's hardly worth running the servers. It seems like a box that's out of sync with the future of EA - which is one that gives a real social feel to our games. The Wii U feels like an offline experience right now."

Ubisoft and EA aren't alone and not appreciating the Wii U platform, Activision is stepping back from Nintendo as well.

"We came to the table with a robust slate," says Eric Hirshberg, president and CEO of Activision Publishing, at E3. "But we have no announcements now."

Imagine if they had everything beautifully emulated from all their consoles' history in a store that can be bought or rented digitally across all consoles, computers and mobile devices? That (to me) would be an awesome direction to go for the company.

First we would need to know how successful the virtual console has been for the Wii (and such). $5 a game isn't much but if they have serious volume it could be worth exploring, if they aren't concerned with other consoles eating up hardware sales.

It does concern me however with Nintendo not releasing proper controllers to play these legacy games. IMHO having a real NES, SNES, N64 controller is pivotal to the experience.

For me, I'm happy with USB offerings of these controllers, emulators and downloading roms but offering a decent legal alternative could bring back that Nintendo magic they once held.

Sega uses this model (now) and its somewhat profitable. There is something to be said about making software and having "pure" profit with no material overhead.

However, I agree. For younger generations to enjoy the genesis (no pun intended) of video games going forward, a touch screen or wonky Wii-mote isn't going to aid the experience. Only 4 controllers need to be considered. The SNES controller (because it's similar enough to a NES controller), N64 controller, a Sega Saturn controller (because its similar enough to a Megadrive/Genesis controller) and a Playstation controller (which, in my opinion, is button compatible with any Sony console, and even XBOX)

I HATE the analog stick on the N64. Then there's the whole "three leg" design. Horrible controllers, I'm really hard pressed to decide if I hate them the most, or my Atari 2600 sticks (which still function, barely).

I use a wired 360 controller for just about all oldschool console gaming. Playing Dreamcast ports in particular I feel right at home. But really it works great for everything except fast-paced Genesis/Saturn games (fighting games, especially Saturn titles), where the lack of a "6-button" front layout becomes awkward - but the same could be said for PS controllers, and Wii controllers are non-starters in that same scenario.

The Saturn controllers (and late-gen Genesis) are really nice. Very comfortable and best D-Pad EVER. Their later Saturn analog controller isn't quite as nice to hold, but I still liked it a whole let better than the N64 pads - especially for durability. For Saturn/Genesis titles you can pick up an adapter (if you have original controllers), or a USB Saturn-type controller (though you have to hunt around for the Sega-sanctioned ones, the cheap knock offs are bad).

Guess I'm one of the few that thinks the N64 had the best controller then. It needs some minor fixes, such as the analog stick going out rather easily, but the design was great IMO.

I do realize that using the L button was pretty much pointless when you're using the analog stick, but from what I saw you either used the analog stick + Z button or the D-pad + L button, never some combination of the sort. That's not to say that those buttons couldn't be used, L button for taunt in Super Smash Brothers for instance, but they certainly weren't a necessity and you could play without having to use them.

That said, this is mostly going off of memory since I haven't played many N64 games lately.

I have 2 controller adapters for my Wii. They will accept NES, SNES, Genesis or N64 controllers. In all fairness though, I usually end up using a GCN controller or the Wii classic controller for all but a select few games.

The big problem with VC isn't the cost or profitability (after all, these are games LONG since past their shelf-life). The problem with VC is the in-fighting between consoles on who gets what game for download. It's really no different than the BS that is going on with media streaming on Netflix, Amazon, etc. Do away with the "screw you guys, I'm taking my ball and going home" mentality", and gamers everywhere will be better off for it. I'm more than just a little pissed off that MacroScrew has hampered all efforts to bring classic Nintendo-console games to the VC (including DK64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, etc.)

Sega has been putting their back catalog on Steam for awhile now and it seems to be working for them,although I'd argue that $5 a pop for genesis games is a little steep, closer to $1 a pop would be the better choice.

The problem Ubisoft had with ZombieU is it was really the wrong title for the Wii U, rightly or wrongly the nintendo is seen as a "kid's system" and the kind of guys that really dig Zombie games just aren't gonna buy a Wii U.

Personally I'm hoping that with the Xbone and PS4 both being AMD PCs that games will be released across the consoles and PC at the same time and with decent PC controls to match, I know my oldest would have bought Zombie U if it were on PC on launch day because he is a Zombie maniac but he's not gonna blow 3 bills just to have a single game.

With all these big publishers turning their backs on Nintendo, this would be the absolute perfect opportunity to transform the business model and cut Ouya/Google/nVidia off at the pass, removing licensing fees, reducing dev kit costs, and courting independent developers up and down the isle.

If they were really clever about it, they could truly shake things up, even moreso than Ouya or even Google would have a chance to. It'll never happen, though. Oh well.

I'm honestly curious why publishers started turning their backs on Nintendo starting with the N64. The N64 did quite well, yet some left. Gamecube did poorly, more left (this is unsurprising). Wii ends up selling the most of any console, not sure if any left but they certainly didn't put as much effort into Wii releases. WiiU, apparently some left according to you.

Seems like it didn't really matter how well Nintendo did, others just didn't give a crap. I especially don't understand it with the Wii given how popular it was. Then again, these are the companies that tacked on Wiimote capabilities and wondered why the game was reviewed poorly and sold poorly.

Nintendo is the only gaming company left. They making gaming devices. We're talking about toys here. Pretty much the only toys adults will use besides vibrators. These other two, they're not making toys. They make appliances. Platforms. Distribution models.

Nintendo's ecosystems don't work for these publishers' business models because all they want to do is sell pop. Any music or movie producer will tell you, pop is easier (all you have to do is follow the formula) and cheaper, and generates higher returns because it reaches a broader market. Nintendo keeps making these interesting toys that require forethought and creativity. Creativity is expensive and time-consuming -- the Kiss of Death to a corporate executive.

Handhelds are excluded from this because casual gamers won't move to that space for some reason; it remains hardcore. Publishers who want to move software in that space have to cater at least a little bit to hardcore gamers. But once someone figures out how to make mobile pop, Nintendo is dead meat. Apple is about 0.6 steps away.

Nintendo's best and only move is to do what I'm proposing. I should be the CEO.

Oh I take it you missed the rant from the head of Crytek and some of the other gaming houses? okay friend, i'll clue you in.

The reason it didn't matter what Nintendo did was two fold, 1.- They treated gaming houses VERY badly, apperently they've kept that "we're the only real game in town" attitude from the NES days, and more importantly 2.- For the last 4 systems they have crippled their systems with really REALLY bad hardware choices.

With N64 you had carts which not only meant you had to cripple a game compared to the PSOne and Saturn because of the high costs of chips (play Gex on N64 he has only 6 or so one liners and its painful to play because of that) with the GC you had the funky smaller discs (which I believed they carried over to the later systems, been awhile since I messed with a Nintendo console) which raised production costs and with the Wii and Wii U you had them using such weak hardware that making a cross platform game was nearly impossible, the Nintendo system just couldn't keep up. Look up the chip on the Wii U, the graphics chip is roughly equal to an HD4770 which is not only out of date but AMD has it in the "legacy" bin and the CPU is just a higher clocked Wii chip, which means its already running 6+ year old tech upon release.

So its no surprise why third party devs left in droves, they had higher costs for less returns than the other two and with money tight I have a feeling the Wii U is gonna end up just like the Wii, a handful of great titles from Nintendo buried in a mountain of cheap shovelware.

Licensing fees are their only reason for having a console. If they had no licensing fees there would be no point in a console to begin with. Also ouya and google do have fees in the form of their online stores. You can circumvent them but hell if you'll get decent volume, much less something comparable to a regular console (on google play, the ouya is worthless). WiiU dev kit is already rumored much cheaper than other consoles.

Looking at the review scores this games must suck very badly. And I personally wouldn't play a zombie game. They are so worn out and yesterday.

Strange, the people I've talked to who've played it say it's one of the best zombie games they've ever played. Poor sales are due to no one owning a wiiu. I wish they'd've released it multiplatform.

Negative. No zombie game list is complete without at least one HotD game. My personal fav is HotD: Overkill. The Wii is perfect for rail shooters.

When the Wii was announced on E3, Ubisoft said that they will use all the system new features like the Wii Remote. For the launch they release Red Steel with a very bad game controls and four years after that, they release Red Steel 2 that was bad in every aspect you can think of. Then in the WiiU E3 announcement they said the same thing and release this title for the launch. Apparently the game is good, based on the reviews (check for them on the web) and is a sales hit based in the figures on This game is the third best selling of all games released for WiiU until this day. Honestly, I am not interested in this game, but I do not see how this game is no profitable either.

I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding Red Steel 2. It's pretty well regarded. Got good reviews from both critics and players.
