New Super Mario Wii  (Source: Joystiq)
Nintendo announces several new Mario games and a new Metroid title

Nintendo has kicked off its E3 2009 press conference and many are anxiously waiting to hear what Nintendo has in store for gamers at the show. Right out of the gate Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway announced that there would be a new Mario game for fans to enjoy.

Dunaway announced that a game called New Super Mario Bros. for Wii is coming and supports multiple players for up to four people in a side-scrolling game that pays homage to the original very well. The game offers main mode and a co-op mode and players can switch at any time between the two.

Mario sports a propeller cap to fly upwards in parts of the game reports Joystiq which is activated by shaking the Wii remote. At the end of the multiplayer game players are ranked based on how many coins they collect.

After Mario, Dunaway moves right into a new Wii Fit game called simply enough Wii Fit Plus. The new Plus version helps users find a specific exercise regime just for them. The game offers six strength and yoga training activities that are new and allows the setup of playlists for exercises. Wii Fit Plus also keeps track of the amount of calories players burn during their workout. Wii Fit Plus will be out this fall.

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Amie talked about the Wii Motion Plus accessory that has been talked up for a while now. The demo of Motion Plus also included some Wii Sports Resort play reports Joystiq. Everyone starts the game by parachuting out of an airplane. Archery was demoed along with other aspects of the game. Wii Sports Resort launches July 26.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 was next on the agenda with talk about the bundle that comes with the game. EA Sports will offer the game with the Motion Plus accessory and without. Red Steel 2 is the follow up to the popular sword play game and will require the use of the Motion Plus accessory.

Another new Mario game is coming to the Wii called Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. The game is a side scroller with RPG aspects set inside a massive dino-monster's digestive system. Sounds weird. The game is set to launch this Fall. Another Mario game called Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again is coming to DSIWare June 8 and is much the same as Mario vs. Donkey Kong with the addition of a full level editors and the ability to share custom levels online.

Dunaway came back on stage and has announced a second Mario title for the Wii, a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy called simply enough Super Mario Galaxy 2. The game has Yoshi and Mario on some worlds reports Joystiq. Yoshi can get power-ups that allow him to blow up like a balloon and a large button freezes water allowing Mario to run on the frozen lake. Some of the games levels are 2D side scrolling action.

One of the biggest announcements at the conference was a new Metroid game from Nintendo and Team Ninja. The game is set for a 2010 launch and is called Metroid: Other M, the game apparently has some of the back-story to Samus Aran.

As the owner of a Wii, there's a bunch of great games, but the selection of new games over the last year has been somewhat disappointing. Have to admit, my wii has been collecting dust while I've been returning to PC gaming more. This should go a long way to making up for it, though.

Mario Galaxy was easy to play, fun, and addictive and the sequel sounds like more good stuff. And while some didn't like the latest entries in the Metroid series, I liked them a lot. Can't wait for these.

The only way this could get better is if Nintendo was withholding a surprise Zelda game for the holiday season... *wishes*

Definitely excited about all this as well. I'm glad they're including co-op support in the Mario game. My girlfirend and I love playing video games together every now and then. I'd really like to see a co-op Mario, Zelda, and even a Metroid game!

I play the WII off and on; my problem isn't so much fun factor... It's limited time in my adult life. Even more than lack of time, I'm a PC gamer at heart because I like mods, building mods, and having the ability to make my graphics prettier via hardware upgrades.

I will say this for WII: I love mine because it’s fun, innovative, and it’s the only console that can do something my computer can’t (motion controls). Granted with the right hardware/drivers I’m sure I could get that to work on my PC as well.

About the article though... WII Motion Plus, I hope is a big success and I really would like it to add more depth to the motion controls (as it’s said to do). I was a little disappointed when I got Red Steel only to find out that swigging the remote allowed the player to execute preprogrammed moves instead of dynamic ones based on where you actually swing your “sword”. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Red Steel and all… but I want to SWORD fight!

I'm in the same boat as some of you guys. I just don't play console games as much as I used to but I seem to be PC gaming as much as ever. My weekly console usage boils down to a few hours of PS2 games and BDs on my PS3, a few sessions of CoD5 on the 360 and some time with the big name games on Wii as they are released. That's still a lot of gaming but I wish I had time for more.

Same boat as well.

I stopped my WoW account when my wife finished art school because our social life got a sudden kick in the pants she wasn't studying her tooshie off anymore.

Now I get maybe an hour at a time for PC gaming every three days or so, which is hardly enough for WoW or any other online gaming (damn you Bioware for making KotoR 3 a MMORPG).

That all being said, the Wii will be our next purchase as we do enjoy console gaming together. Tiger Woods 2010 here we come!!

Damnit man, you missed one VERY important word in that sentence!! It should've read:

More like a ship instead of a boat, looks like if PC gamers had too choose a console, it would be the wii, but I guess it makes sense since the gaming experience is the same on an xbox or ps3 as is on the pc

That was the logic I used, we only got an Xbox 360 because of a few exclusive games we like and we wanted something to take advantage of our 50" HD TV.

pretty sure that's been my contention about nintendo's products for 10+ years. PC gamers only need a nintendo console--the rest is all the same.

I can afford to remain indifferent about the Wii's 3rd party support--because I play most of my 3rd party games on the PC.

I own all three consoles, but only bought the Wii for my daughter. It really has no appeal to me at all & what I saw @ E3 from Nintendo wasn't good at all, other than Metroid, but Sony & MS's ruled. I think Nintendo did a great job for their base, just nothing appealing to me. Not a fan of motion controls at all, but it's nice to spend time playing the Wii with my youngin.

The Wii is just okay...

I mean at $250 it was an okay purchase. Nothing really innovative yet or totally new. The game supply has been frankly poor and I don't really see how the controller has revolutionized gaming. Still no swordfighting or fencing game to take full advantage of the motion controls.

I think the DS was a much bigger success in terms of introducing a new paradigm (touch) to gaming. The potential of motion controls has not yet been realized at all.

I love Nintendo and all, and I stood in line for 6 hours at Toys 'R Us on launch day but this system is just alright. Nothing too special yet. Wii Sports is still pretty much the best overall game so far IMHO. I can always pull that out in a party. Mario Kart also, but that applied to every other Nintendo system since the SNES.

IMHO, no system since the Dreamacast has matched the level of creativity and innovation it had in its time.

Only reason is because Nintendo has crappy third party support. Just about every game Nintendo actually makes is gold, but they can't make EVERYTHING. The third party developers, and most of the second party developers too, make very poor use of the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii. In fact, they practically just tack it on no matter if it actually makes the game worse. Tony Hawk and SSX, as well as most racing games, are damn near unplayable because of this. And if Wii Sports is the best game on the system to you..... then you don't like quality game I guess. Not that Sports is bad, but it's certainly not the best.

I find the second and third party support poor and they are really holding the system back from becoming the best by far out of the three.

I agree 100% I mean there have been a few gems, I liked Red Steel for instance and a couple of other 3rd party FPS's were nice. Got to admit though Nintendo blows all 3rd party out of the water, they really are a great game developer.

One thing I miss on the WII and GOD only know why that haven't exploited the crap out of is RTS... WHY!!!??? WII is the ONLY system that can effectively emulate a mouse out of the box so why no RTS?? PLEASE someone give me a WII RTS!

I don't know about RTS. I dont know if the Wii's wimpy 750Mhz CPU can handle something like that. But there is an excellent Turn-based Strategy game, its called Fire Emblem, you might want to look into it.

By Luticus on 6/2/2009 10:21:50 PM , Rating: 2
I know about fire emblem and I have played it GC predecessor (I agree, excellent series). I think the processor could handle RTS, I mean I’m not talking about Crysis graphics here. Maybe a cut above star craft would suffice... heck anything at this point. I think the control scheme would be perfect for it and it's a highly untapped market on the WII.

By StevoLincolnite on 6/3/2009 12:00:30 AM , Rating: 2
Perhaps a StarCraft Remake? Like the Nintendo 64 job, that will run on the Wii, regardless of it's processing power if it could run on a 486 and the Nintendo 64, all in all there needs to be an RTS on the Wii, I love RTS games, and so far Halo Wars is probably the best executed RTS game I have ever seen on a console.

By clovell on 6/3/2009 11:02:26 AM , Rating: 2
Right, but Fire Emblem doesn't even use the motion controls.

No I think Galaxy is a better game, but Wii Sports is the most useful. I can't put Galaxy on when guests are over. Wii Sports I can play with anyone. Everyone loves it. The system excels with party type games and thus far I haven't seen anything that instantly appeals in party situations.

Some good games...

In any other year, this would be a great reveal of titles and show strong growth of games on the platform, but, man, even as a Nintendo fan boi, I have to say Microsoft pwned em this year.

I guess its like following the best speaker in a debate class and, despite being good, you look bad in comparison. (sigh...)

Yeah there's no doubt that if someone told me they could afford one and only one system I would tell them to buy the 360. The Wii is a nice second system and party system so far. MS took everything they learned from the original Xbox (and the billions of dollars lost in the process) and just took everything to the next level.

RE: Some good games...
By Alexstarfire on 6/2/2009 5:57:57 PM , Rating: 2
Considering both sides primarily have sequels coming out I fail to see how Microsoft pwned them. I do find it sad that practically no third party games are becoming A rank, and this goes for all the consoles. First and second party games are doing very well though.

RE: Some good games...
By Bender 123 on 6/2/2009 6:55:19 PM , Rating: 2
The games were a near wash for me...both system's disk trays (and cartridge slot...DS) will be well fed in the next year, but the intangibles were all there for 360...Twitter, Netflix queue management, Facebook, 1080P streaming and a cool motion tracking system really kicked it from game system that does media well, to social system that does great games. I am sure Hulu is only a few months out too...I use my 360s as set-top boxes and these functions just add more value...

Nintendo just rolled out great games, but MS showed system commitment by evolving a console already in your house.

Not sure about Twitter, but Facebook (old version anyway), and Netflix work just fine on the Wii. I can say that this was around the time the Wii came out and not more recently. Not sure if anything has changed since then, but it's worth noting.

That being said, I got my console to play games. I suppose there are those who need a media center as well, but I've had my desktop for ages, and now a laptop, that I can use if/when I want to. My desktop holds more than a PS3 or 360 could ever dream of, and I've still got room to expand it.

I'm sure the 360 and/or PS3 are great for doing things quick though. I've just felt they had features that were quite useless for a console.

Seal of Quality give you the trust that your game will be fully functional, and that you can finish it, and not full of bugs where the game is unplayable, like all the old ATARI 5200 games that were released and killed the gaming industry.

The Nintendo Seal of Quality criteria did change over the years, such as back in the NES days to limiting software release form publishers/developers to ensure a minimum quality game. Nintendo sea of quality was never intend to assure that the game will be fun or not to play. Just that it won't freeze on you, or has a bug that prevents you from completing the game.

Same here.. I'm on my computer allot, so when I want to game I just choose a (app/mod)game and go. I get on the Wii or Xbox when a new game come out for them, or to fill a urge,(I don't even Goldeneye on the N64, because I got the CS mod. Goldeneye (GE urge still hits once in a while) is still a great game.) But if a game comes out for all systems, I buy it for the PC instead of the consoles. Better graphics, adjustable button config, and all that..

I want the TV you see in the picture. If I had a TV that big, I would play my Wii or Xbox more often.. Of course, I would also soon hook up my computer to it. "Run!!! the 50ft tank is after you"
