Today marked the official launch of the much anticipated DS Lite console from Nintendo

Although the Nintendo DS Lite has been available in select retail stores in the United States for over a week, most gamers patiently waited until Saturday, June 11.  The new, lighter version of the DS console had hundreds of Nintendo diehards waiting in line at the Nintendo World store in New York City's Rockefeller Center.  According to Nintendo, the company has sold almost 17 million DS consoles around the world.  By the looks of the early success of the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo has another winner on its hands.  The staff over at Engadget have posted pictures and commentary from the DS Lite launch in New York City. Engadget reports:

Wouldn't you know it, last night instead of going out and getting our social life on, Paul and I cruised over to Rockefeller Center to the Nintendo World Store for the official DS Lite launch event (it being the eve of June 11th and all). We heard people were lining up over 13 hours in advance to get their shiny white DS Lite -- though the fact that the first 100 buyers got a free copy of Brain Age and a carrying case surely wasn't discouraging a crowd.

The Nintendo DS Lite is available for a MSRP of $129.99.

I was lucky to find a store breaking the official street date and have had mine for about a week now! Someone gave me the original DS, and I was hooked. The new one is lighter, sleeker, and the screens are damn near twice as bright. The colors are more vibrant and image detail is superb. Kudos go to Nintendo on making something great even better.

it has been a pretty reliable trend with their portable units...

First GameBoy, then GameBoy Pocket. GameBoy Color, while a pseudo-new system, basically just improved upon GameBoy/Pocket by adding in color and minor enhancements to power.

Then the GameBoy Advance, a definite upgrade. GameBoy Advance SP to improve it (lit screen, folding design to protect the screen, rechargable battery). (GameBoy Micro is more of a side step)

Now we've got the DS and its improvement, the DS-Lite.

GameBoy -> GameBoy Pocket
Advance -> Advance SP
DS -> DS Lite

i thought the pocket had the same processing power as the original gameboy (not much) whereas the color was basically the second coming of the NES

All the gamestops in my area had stopped taking preorders by Friday, so I showed up at Target this morning and got one with Mario Kart DS. I love it, but the buttons are tiny!!!

Local Gamestop has the nerves to charge $137 for the Lite while other places sells for $129 w/freebies.

The same mental talkdown Gamestop use like, you better pre-order since they don't get anymore in this week to secure the next delivery BS. I'm sure Target/Walmart is killing them this week since you can get it just about everywhere without a preorder.
