The Nintendo DS Lite is available at select US retailers

Although the Nintendo DS Lite handheld console isn't supposed to be released in the United States until Sunday, June 11, reports indicate that several stores, including Walmart and Target, have already placed the coveted handheld on store shelves.  It is unknown whether or not the stores intended on selling the DS Lite early, or if it was a mistake.  Because of the number of stores around the nation that have them available, it looks like both companies decided not to honor the embargo date on the console.  Japan has seen high demand but extremely low supply of the DS Lite.

The DS Lite will have a retail cost of $129 when "officially" released on June 11.  If you're curious to see if your local Walmart or Target already has the device available, head over to Frappr.

With the possibility of the Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo Wii video game consoles being released in 2006, the next year or so for Nintendo looks good.

i mean, is the original DS going to have a price cut?

Yeah, there are bound to be price cuts because for the original just like with GB Advance vs. Advance SP. But considering the new model is just so much better in all the important areas, there's going to be low demand for the old model and I doubt there will still be continued manufacturing of it so stores will have to bottom out the price to get them off the shelves.

But I don't think price cuts can sway me, the original DS would have to be half the price, if not more, to really have a chance to sway me from going with the DS Lite - it really is that much better.

Wow! Friday June 11? I can't wait till 2010. That's when the next Friday June 11 occurs. Unless I'm using the wrong calendar.

Since my eldest kid gets out of school Friday, June 9th, I suspect you are right. No way there's going to be another Friday only 2 days later ;)

Eh, seems it's not in my area

At least Frappr says not. Regardless, I think my parents reserved one for me for my birthday.

Can't wait.

Oh yeah, and you said, "With the possibility of the Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo Wii video game consoles being released in 2006, the next year or so for Nintendo looks good."

I'm pretty sure Nintendo DS Lite is being released over here in 2006, and I'd have to say that Nintendo might just have said Wii will be released in 2006, as well.

:)

Just because the Wii was announce with a release date doesnt mean it will be met. I forsee massive shortages of all Wii components resultingt in extremely limited supplies.

Same goes for the PS3.

considering there hardware requirement for Wii isn't exactly demanding, I wouldn't see them having any delay problems or shortages for that matter - unless there's something wrong with the control system that needs ironed out - but that wouldn't be a delay based on shortages now would it?

On the other PS3's delays and likely shortages would be due to things such as Cell's low yeilds and BluRay problems.

I really don't see the big deal..

It's not like it's going to be a 360 or PS3 launch, where you won't be able to find one.. and E-bayers will be able to charge double the retail price..

It ain't gonna happen. Anyone who's so desperate for a DS would probably just buy the old version (which are still readily available..)

I wouldn't disrespect it, I remember the GBA selling out upon release, the SP as well. I wasn't in the market for a DS upon its launch so I can't say I remember what it was like (except that there were some initial doubts that have easily disapeared) - and judging how the Lite did in Japan and the fact that the DS has some pretty good titles out right now, anyone on the edge of going for a DS is probably going to be pushed over thanks to the Lite.

As I've said a few posts up, people will most likely pay the premium for the Lite, because it really is that much better, and thus the chances that it quickly goes OOS aren't all that bad.

Imported one from Japan...

I Imported one from Japan (Enamel Blue), it is much better then the original DS, the Screen Brightness is much higher. Also the screens themselves seem different, more clearer, less murky.

Not to mention the thing looks much better and smaller, although not advertised but i think it seems a little more 'snappy' then the old DS.

The only possible problems i have with it, is because its that much smaller, its a little difficult to find a comfortable position for playing games like Mario Kart, however im sure ill find a good position!

Its great you guys are finally getting it, i hope they provide more colours eventually for the US.

Cannot wait until Black Friday
By Sunrise089 on 6/1/2006 9:36:34 AM , Rating: 2
I'm assuming considering the timing and the fact that the Wii will be stealing most of the show around the holidays that Nintendo/a retailer will offer a pretty great DS Lite deal for black friday shoppers. Assuming they have something like this, I can definately see myself purchasing my first handheld in a LONG time (remember Sega Game Gear?).

"Possibility"?

What the heck? Possibility? DS Lite will be officially out at all stores by June 11, and Wii will be out before Thanksgiving. It's not a possibility, and there's no chance Wii will be delayed.. the only possibility now is that Wii will come out early October instead of November.
