Nintendo retracts a statement saying that 1 million Wiis would be available by the end of 2006

It appears that Nintendo may have been a bit too overly optimistic when it comes to shipment forecasts for the popular Wii console. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was quoted in late November as saying that Nintendo would make available 1 million Wiis by early December. Even more emphatically, Fils-Aime reported that Nintendo would cross the 2 million mark within the opening weeks of 2007.

Nintendo is now changing its tune a bit when it comes to Wii shipments/sales figures. On Thursday, the company issued a statement which read "Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be available in the United States by the end of the year." The very next day the statement was retracted by Nintendo.

There was no reason given for the retraction but one could only guess that Nintendo is having supply issues with the Wii. A quick check of some local stores in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area (a hot-bed for all things tech) shows that no one has the console in stock. Refresh Thing also shows the console sold out all over the web (with the exception of eBay).

Nintendo got off to a magnificent start in North America with its Wii selling more than 600,000 units within the first two weeks. That remaining 400,000 units, however, seems to be in limbo – at least for the rest of 2006.

I must say, while I don't support any of the next gen systems(I don't plan to buy any if the new ones) I have to admit, despite my reservations about the Wii, I have never had more fun playing golf on a console before. It truely does feel like I am out on the course and am really swinging.
I can only imagine a tiger woods game would perfect the swing that much further and I can see how easy it would be to add the tilt to hook or slice the ball.

I have to admit that if a golf game came out and the console price dropped I might be tempted to buy one. As for now, I will just watch and see how the consoles do.

This is the dumbest argument I've seen this month. The wiimote can have all the same functionality of all those niche controllers you just mentioned...EXCEPT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY ALL OF THEM! You get it all from day 1, and all games will support it! Plus lots of games will come with cheap inexpensive foam inserts you can attach to the wiimote--I've already seen a steering wheel insert that approximates a racing wheel, and soon there will be a "gun grip" wiimote holster for gun games.

The "awesome wiimote" is not a "niche" controller when it comes with the system, genius. The whole point is that all Wii games will take advantage of real-life movement making the game more immersive. Now whether its just a fad or if its really the next big gaming "Revolution" remains to be seen.

Thats exactly what I meant.

As for the wiimote not being a "niche" controller. Review after review from PRO wii sites is that many games just don't translate well to the wiimote. Which makes me wonder, is the wiimote designer better than the joystick or gamepad design. If so, does just a new fangled controller make the system better? Can't anyone decide to make a wii-clone for an XBox 360 or PS3 and a whole series of games for it? (barring patent issues, which due to the abundance of "similar" controllers may not even be an issue)

And I'm not saying wii fans are dumb (unlike the facetious reference to me as a "genius") but am saying that I'm curious how this will all turn out.

Coming from working retail for quite a few years, the empty boxes are for stores which keep their Wii's and PS3's in the back of the store and off store shelves for security purposes. The store is supposed to place as many empty boxes on store shelves as they have systems in the back. The customer comes in, acquires about the console/empty box and none get stolen. When you think about it, it makes quite a bit of sense.

But you're right, this must be Nintendo trying to get customers to buy empty boxes...

You need to realize that the reason people cry foul on Sony so much is because they have touted their system as the greatest thing since sliced bread and time after time broken almost every promise they have made in regards to the PS3, and people are tired of their crap. Is a Sony vs. Nintendo blunder equally criticized at this time? no, Sony is being held to a much stricter standard (by the online gaming community) due to this past year of blunders, Sony now has to try to regain the trust of the Gamers before they can hope to have a chance of winning this console war, just my .02

But at the same time nobody can argue that the manufacturing of a PS3 must be much harder than a Wii. It is a fact due to the complexity of the product.

Nintendo missing manufacturing targets is bad because the Wii cannot be much harder to make than a Gamecube. Production of the Wii was supposedly started in June/July and Nintendo did assure everyone that they expected 4 Million in the channel by Dec 31st.

In the end this is just another console pissing contest and it really doesn't matter. Go buy the one(s) you want and go and play them.

But do you care about how hard is it to produce? I know most consumers don't, it's not their role to care about how Sony do their components, they care about Sony delivering their promises, be it quality or schedules,
after all, everyone is paying a premium price on the system, which is the sum of the pricing of the parts and production (if Sony is absorbing any loss here, it's their choice: they chose the technology, they pushed the blu-ray, etc).

Manufacturing of the PS3 and Wii themselves probably aren't too much different, they'd be mostly a matter of coordination of the mass quantity of product and delivery of the components to the right place at the right time. In that sense, the PS3 would be more difficult, esp for the Blue Laser which then needs to be manufactured (by somebody) into a drive, which then needs to be delivered to where the box is assembled, and then tested and delivered to the next step in the distribution chain. Both products themselves are fairly simple boards with relatively few components (I've designed boards that make the PS3's board look blank -- but sold for a LOT more than 600 dollars :-).
Getting those mass quantities of items to show up lock step is probably the tricky part, esp the diodes, of course. Still has to go through customs, long boat rides, etc as well.

Of course there is the matter of financing the being-built inventory. A million units (unsold) is a good chunk of change "up front". For Sony, that'd be, what, nearly a billion dollars?

i think its the scale of the blunders that happen with the systems, also taking into account the costs of the systems i think sony flaming is moderately more justified. plus i dont think the success of the Wii was even envisioned by nintendo themselves. the reason the Wiis arent regularly available in stores is because they are holding all sales until sundays and there are lines of people waiting outside the stores on sunday mornings to get them. two weeks ago my friends made an attempt and said that there were 70 people waiting outside a Circuit city and Toys R Us that were next to each other. needless to say he didnt bother waiting. but found out that people were waiting since 4 pm the day before. this isnt on release day, this was a restock release.

Sorry, it was late and I made this comment just before going to bed. When I'm tired my english isn't the best as it tend to look more like a french -> english translation made by Google.

Your comment was a little too offensive for my taste toward many of Dailytech readers and that's why I reacted so promptly.

Like you I don't like much the way this whole comments section for this news wasn't at all about the news. The problem is that michal1980 was the first one to post with somewhat of a flame war starting comment.

If like you said you like to read Dailytech, then you must realize that while it tend to have more and more comments of the sort (especially while the news is concerning Sony or Nintendo) , most of Dailytech news comments are still on topic.

We're actually still expanding quite a bit. We served more than 15M pages with more than 7K users commenting last month -- six months ago we had less than 3K users commenting!

But I understand your concern about threadcrapping. We've got more tweaks to the moderation system on the way to keep topics at least semi-ontrack.

So funny how optimistic people are about Nintendo. In that very article saying they WILL NOT ship 1 million there's a poll asking people if they think they will ship 1 million and 74% say yes.... Lol it just doesn't matter what reality is for these people does it? I mean I like Nintendo, their games are fun, but they made a huge mistake by not going Hi-Def (or 5.1 sound) this generation by basically re-branding the GameCube in a different box with a new controller as a gimick... They consistantly fail to deliver a decent quantity of first-tier titles 3+ years into a console's cycle (see N64, GameCube) once the 3rd party support dries up... I see the Wii being modestly sucessful with diehard Nintendo fans, and the younger crowd because of its price point... but not much more than that.

Yep, I think Nintendo would've had this generation if they went high-def along with the interactive controller. The high def thing is what's keeping me away. Standard definition just looks like crap on an HDTV.

Have you played the Wii? The point is, it's FUN. I think Nintendo has just shown the entire world that you don't have to cram an over-rated Cell processor and money making Blue Ray gimmick (and still be late by an entire year, and STILL blow their launch numbers) to make games fun. Why is it, that gamers consistently fail to realize that less is more? Over-complicating things allows for a plethora of problems, as we have all seen with Sony this year. Take WoW, for example... it's by far the most popular and played online game in the world with 8 MILLION subscribers, and it's 2 years old with a very simple "cartoonish" 3D engine. The point is, more effort was spent on GAMEPLAY than the prettiest graphics at 10fps.

So Nintendo didn't over complicate things by putting in DVD, 5.1, or HD support... is it easy now-a-days? Probably... but you guys keep forgetting how much effort and thought went in to planning an immersive experience by using their new wiimote. Focus on the parts that make the game fun. And not just for gamers, but for kids, parents, and even grandparents. Let's see Sony pull that one off? Getting an entire culture, spanned across multiple generations is an incredible accomplishment, I don't care what you say.

So why is the Wii selling like hotcakes? It's not "Nintendo Fanbois" or "HD pwnage" or "5.1 surround", or even the over-reviewed Cell processor! ---- I say it again...

The Wii is FUN. For everybody. Even for the die-hard flamewar starting Sony enthusiasts.

And the ps3 is not? And the XBox 360 is not? The wiimote is not a magic wand. There are pleanty of alternative controllers for the XBox 360 already that are more "realistic and immersive" than the wiimote. Is the wiimote more "realistic and immersive" than a steering wheel and footpedals for a racing game? Is teh wiimote more "realistic and immersive" than a flight control joystick? Does the wiimote create a more realistic dance than any of the Dance pads?

Really, its not a magic wand. Its just Nintendo forcing us to use a new controller design thats not even better suited for over half the game styles and telling us its "innovative"

I've used the wiimote and its... silly and pathetic.

Will i buy a wii? no
Will i buy a PS3? no
Will i buy a XBox360? no
I'll buy a game that I want and whichever system plays it.

Maybe they're delaying shipments a bit to ensure the stronger Wiimote strap is included instead of the current one which is too weak? Or IBM can't ship enough processors ...

Or the shipping is delayed for other reasons.

Or they're moving US destined consoles to other territories. Or the statement was retracted for entirely unrelated reasons.

We do know that worldwide Nintendo has shipped well over a million consoles, possibly approaching 2 million with the recent European launch. They did say 4 million by year end - I guess most likely that figure will end up closer to 3 million.

I wonder if the PS3 will get to 1 million worldwide by the same time? Meanwhile the XBox360 will be snapped up by anyone who can't get a PS3 or Wii, and could make its 10m figure.

It is possible that Nintendo doesn't want to get onto the hype band wagon that other manufacturers have been misusing. Nintendo is still slated for another shipment on December 18th. At least Ebgames and Gamestop hope there will be another shipment.

The first number I remember saying said that Nintendo will ship ~4 million Wii's by the end of their fiscal year (feb).

I don't know haw many consoles were reserved for the Japan and Europe launches, but with 600,000 already sold in the US, I am a little surprised that Nintendo didn't ship at least 200,000 each for those regions especially considering the year is't over yet.

Lastly http://nexgenwars.com/ estimates that 1,311,088 Wii's have already been sold. I guess their numbers are wrong?

Can someone clear this up for me?

Those are world wide numbers so far in US only about 600,000 have been sold. With worldwide numbers in the 1.3 million range which includes, Japan, Europe and Australia.

Completely unrelated, but...

Does anyone else like those Wii ads on TV? I can't get enough of them.

For those who haven't seen them, the basic premise is that two Japanese guys drive around in a Smartcar and ring people's doorbells and say "Wii would like to play." Then it shows shots of the people enjoying the Wii.

Every time I see one I get all pumped up! Is it wrong that a 25 year-old is this excited about a video game system?

No not wrong all because the system is that fun.

For example I bought the Rapala fishing game. The game itself is not that good, at all. On any other system it would not be enjoyable. On the we though it is a blast despite not being a very good game. We were playing till 3 a.m. Saturday setting the hook and reeling in monster fish. It is a great system and deserves the hype it gets.

I got marked down... surprise.. I'm 100% sure that those people who did that are Wii fanboys. The number one problem with that console is the fanbase. Loud, frothing, fanatical, and simple minded. I can't wait until the newness fad on the Wii dies down and we can get back to evaluating games based on quality, not their allegiance.

Now, about the article, it is a Sony bash-fest. 75% of that article has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion. All you did was show what your agenda is with that article, which lends credence to the hypocrisy label.

And how is the argument weak? Please, by all means address the merits of the argument and tear it to shreds. I welcome it.

Please, don't try and act like "the rest of the world" is on your side in thinking that the Nintendo situation differs from Sony retracting their year-end console promise. The fact is that both made promises about how many units would be available and now apparently both won't be able to meet those promises. For all of you who are trying to say that that "isn't the same" I'm really at a loss for words.

Arguing the degree to which one erred more than the other is moot because the numbers display those facts. Of course Sony reduced their number more nearing and through the launch date. However that does not change the facts. It's pretty absurd to think it would be a possibility that if Sony had shorted their launch by 50-100k that people would use the argument "well it wasn't that much ...they almost met their target number." On the contrary, it would still be "ha Sony is having so much trouble they couldn't meet their launch numbers!" Yet for Nintendo you spin it positively. How pathetic.

I pointed out that Sony promised 400k to N.A. and didn't meet that promise. What, again, exposes your agenda is that you state that they "knew it to be a lie." That's a real objective and factual argument there, bro.

Heh, from the cry of just wait until the PS3 invades --after xbox 360 hit the store shelves...

..sony has delayed the launch of their console.

Then, dramatically cut down the shipping estimates ....and, then, cut them down again while announcing that the europe launch would be "delayed" until march... Finally, Sony delivered less then 1/2 of those that were promised during the final countdown. The ones delivered still need bios updates to reach the promised specs.

This was not just a blue diode problem...but also problems with the cell manufacturing and, undoubtedly, a whole host of other issues that only Sony and its contractors really know about.

Sony has distracted and misdirected for more than a year now. So yes, you would have to be a fanboy to defend Sony's antics now.

Sony has admitted their errors simply by shaking up their leadership ranks a tad.

Do you know why? Because plenty of other sites are reporting the same things. It's hard for a website to seem objective when the problem has been that there has been very little good news this year for Sony.

Michal, they can vote you down all they want, but you are very right in this instance. This is exactly the same thing that sony did, except they did it (retracting their "1 million console worldwide launch" promise) before launch day, yet when Nintendo does it there are already people excusing it. Yes, Sony did then promise 400,000 to N.A. and apparently didn't reach that goal, but that is the same situation Nintendo is faced with now, just in terms of their year-end total.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Michal stands on very solid ground this time. Anybody denying that is ignoring reality and the facts and is clearly biased. Which is sad because 99% of us aren't employed or compensated by either company.

So far the best argument I've seen for why Sony should be berated for the same thing Nintendo is doing is because Sony has "arrogant pricks." Well yes, if that's the best argument that you can come up with you've already proven that objectivity counts for nothing with you...therefore the discussion was already over before it began.

Sorry but its not the same. Sony missed thier mark by under 50%. Nitntendo hit thier initial shipment and will come very close to thier final total just not right on mark.

95% and under 50% are way different numbers.

This is not even close to being the same. The difference is Nintendo said 1 million for the YEAR showed up with about 600k and said they won't make it to 1,000,000.

Sony said they would have 2 million then parsed it down to 1 million said they would have 500k for their launches and showed up with so far 400,000 units worldwide not on launch SO FAR.

Nintendo went PASSED their goal and showed up with 450k+ Wii in NA. Sony showed up with 160k, TOPS. Not the same whatsoever.

People were upset at the pre-order situation for the PS3 launch but this was why the stores adjusted their numbers so there would be alittle play yet Sony screwed it up anyway and skipped less than half the units. The fact that they don't refute that claim makes me wonder if they even shipped as much as the analyst say.

There has not been any bias cause Nintendo didn't do anything but adjust their yearly number and have a really weak tether. Sony on the other hand shorted their launch, shorted their suppliers for post launch, and ignored an entire region. They have adjusted their yearly number 4 times, and I'm sure they will do it before the end of their fiscal year. They also released a system that does not offer all of its functionality on 70% of HDTVs. Sony failed to release a launch lineup that could compete against the pathetic showings of Microsoft or Nintendo's. The PS3, which should be selling like hot cakes is now left to wallow in the abyss until the next holiday season. Why? Because Sony felt the need to showcase new technology. Cell is an overrated CPU and Blu-Ray was a way to make some extra money since SCE is the only profitable division for the corporation. But, No Sony is a band of perfect angels trying to offer the best product to the most consumers at reasonable pricing. All that ails them is blown totally out of proportion and we should go and comfort them with milk and cookies because they make puddles of mud look like packs of rocket scientists. They did the usual, overhype a product that they could not offer at those specs and retract. This is what they get for shoveling most s*** then the company could handle. And this is why Kuturagi got 'promoted'.

Nope, Michael and everyone that agrees with him DIDN'T get it right. This guy got it right, and this is precisely why Sony is taking more heat than Nintendo.

The ratio of Delivered/Promise is much more in favor of Nintendo.

I feel some people here are taking attacks against Sony far too personally. There are very real and justifiable reasons why they are taking more heat than Nintento or anyone else, some of you just fail to grasp the larger picture and choose to only compare the fine points.

Seriously, you've been so pissy with what is reported here about the PS3 and the Wii it's not even funny.

Does it suck that Nintendo may not hit 1 million before year end? Yes. Are we disappointed with that? Yes. Did they still get out more than Sony did with the PS3? Yes.
Has Nintendo thrown out excuses or blatantly arrogant statements about their product or the launch? No.

Not to beat a dead horse.

Wii sold well in N.America. Almost triple what PS3 did, if in fact, the 400k units were barely 200k.

Sounds like the 1m mark won't be reached in the US, but they're making it sound like it's worldwide. I mean, there was supposedly 400k sold in Japan, 600k in US. Isn't that 1 million units sold?

So, the story is based mostly for US sales, not global sales. As the link to GameDaily states:
"Is Nintendo doubtful that it can ship/sell 1 million Wii consoles in the U.S. before the year ends? It's starting to look that way, as the company has retracted a statement proclaiming its 1 million sales goal for the U.S."

US sales. NOT worldwide. Nintendo has just started selling in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Maybe those 400k to hit 1 million went there, instead of the US?

Either way, Nintendo has done very well with it's Wii console.

The last paragraph of GameDaily suggests the best reason:
"So what does this mean? Nintendo did not say why that statement should be disregarded, but one can only assume that either they are having more difficulty with manufacturing than they let on, or perhaps more likely, they are sufficiently satisfied with the U.S. launch numbers and want to divert some of the shipments to Japan and Europe, which haven't been allocated quite as many systems (especially Europe)."

Sounds like the extra units are going there, than the U.S.

Yes I'm sure you're right...because the last 4 YEARS consoles war hasn't been hard on Nintendo at all. Or maybe we should go even further back in time with the N64 and PSOne war.

With that in mind we must wonder as why people seems so angry at Sony and not Nintendo this time around.

From where I stand, it's because Sony really blew it this time around, even with it's fans base. The PS3 is no way what it what supposed to be, it's released 1 year after the Xbox360 but can't even have better graphics, it cost a big $$$$ to have, that is, if you can find one and to finish the final product, the PS3 that is, looks like many of todays PC games, half-baked and in need for many patches.
