MOGO users can photograph, pinpoint and upload information about endangered wildlife to an animal rescue network.
There
are already indications that the BP oil spill has affected the
country's viewpoint about the effects of the crisis. A recent poll
shows that 73
percent of Americans want to cut fossil fuel dependency.
In
addition to the financial ramifications of the oil spill on local
companies and families, the tragedy is also taking a terrible toll on
the environment. Not only has it greatly impacted the area land
and water, but it is also devastating area wildlife.
Now,
thanks to a new iPhone app
called MoGO (Mobile Gulf Observatory), residents in the oil-ravaged
region who want to make a difference can begin by helping to save the
wildlife that are dying as a result of the spill.
The
free app turns users into "citizen scientists."
Citizens who want to contribute can use their phones to take
and submit photographs of oiled, injured or dead wildlife,
pinpoint the location using GPS and send the information to a
database. This will help rescue workers now and will help
wildlife experts in the future.
MoGO was developed by
the National Center for Digital Government at the University of
Massachusetts.
In addition to helping residents become a
activists in the crisis, the goal of the developers of the app is to
find a way to get a more accurate count of impacted wildlife.
The
app also provides a hotline number for users who are uploading
information about affected animals to call in to report.
