Rumors abound of a new sleek, feature-packed Treo utilizing a new Palm OS to be released in March. Are the rumors true?
I have been following this rumor practically since its inception, and what an interesting ride it has been. The general consensus cites the source of the rumor to Treo Central's message board where one of their (former) members posted a topic introducing information on a new Treo to be released on March 15th. The specs of the 800p are as follows:
- 128MB RAM
- SD Card Slot
- Enhanced 320x320 screen
- 3.2MP camera
- Optional Wi-Fi
- BT 2
- Standard EV-DO support
- "Hollywood" codename: sleeker more sexier design
Normally, for a rumor to survive any length of time before being torn to pieces there has to be a basis of truth to support it along the way. In this case, the originator of the tall tale embellished himself as a decision-maker of a business in need of a large number of smart phones and had certain means of gaining key information early on.
One of these "means" was a conference he claimed to have attended (which actually checked out) where the juicy details and a "live" viewing of the so-called 800p were provided. In addition, reputable sources such as a Forbes.com article outlined a research analyst's belief that a "new Treo 700 with the Palm OS may be delivered in April". With tagged codenames such as "Hollywood" also indicated this smart phone was going to feature a RAZR-like design, which given Motorola's recent track record, would end up being sought after by fashion aficionados the world over.
The rumor spread like wildfire and was found to be mentioned on other sites such as The Register, a C|Net Blog, Brighthand, and Gizmodo. Interestingly, all the commotion sparked one Mr. Ferris to register the domain: treo800p.net. In the end however, rumors of the Treo 800p were dispelled.
On a similar note, another rumor was born almost in parallel speaking of a Treo 700p acquired by a different member of the Treo Central forums. This time, rock-hard data combined with a plug Engadget and good communication from the author of the thread has led many of us to believe that the rumored device: the Treo 700p to be introduced by Sprint, does in fact exist. Below is a consolidated list of specs courtesy of gfunkmagic. Enjoy!
