PSP users can now watch videos, listen to music and view pictures off PS3

Sony’s PSP has received a new 3.5 firmware update. This update, along with the latest 1.8 PlayStation 3 firmware, unlocks one of the most exciting connectivity features between the two Sony devices: Remote Play.

Remote Play enables the two devices to connect to each other, one serving as a media hub and the other as a portable viewer. Users can now store their music, pictures and video content on their PlayStation 3 console, and access it remotely with their PSP wherever and whenever it is connected to an adequate Internet connection.

While users can carry gigabytes of media on their PSPs using Memory Stick Pro, connectivity with the PlayStation 3 offers access to 20 or 60 GB (or even more for those who have upgraded their consoles). The term Remote Play is a bit of a misnomer, however, as the system does not currently support any form of gaming.

Also in the 3.5 PSP update is a new RSS Channel Guide to offer better support for RSS feeds. The update for PSP may be obtained now using the system’s auto update feature.

More than a week ago, Sony released version 1.8 firmware for the PlayStation 3, which also added legacy game and DVD movie upscaling to 1080 resolutions.

Steps in the right direction

It's nice to see Sony getting some good press lately with these firmware updates. Good on you Sony for following up on some of the promises you made. Still, I'm waiting for those next gen titles to really start enjoying my system. In the interim though, God of War I & II, R:FoM, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will ease the wait time!(Assasin's Creed, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden are among the titles I am most looking forward to :P)

Its seems like all those claims Sony made about the future of PS3 and PSP wasn't all smoke and mirrors. I have to applaud Sony for there efforts to enhance there core features with great success. Now if they'd lower the price I might consider buying it. 8 |

Enter battle of the console firmwares. This is going to turn out to be AWESOME for consumers. Microsoft is finally forced to compete in software and who would have thought on their very own piece of hardware, and for free of all things. I'm awash with the irony. On a more serious note though, with the similar hardware in the 2 devices it is likely that this sort of software competition will last through out the console life cycle, and the end users are going to be getting more and more value out of their console as time goes on. Unless Sony can find more ways to differentiate themselves from Microsoft they are in for serious trouble. Microsoft knows software development far better and competeing on this front won't turn out well for Sony.

I'm sure your boss will be thrilled when he discovers this. Especially considering most companies have rules against streaming content as it ties down the network.

And thats why I enjoy firing assholes like you. Unless your boss is a complete moron, you don't think there are measures in place or independant audits to monitor your blatant violations of policy?

As the CIO of a medium size company and network engineer by trade, any misuse or unsanctioned use of corporate technology is immediate grounds for termination.

Agreed, I am CEO of a small PC OEM and if i found anyone in my building doing that they would immediately be walked out the front door and given their two weeks pay.

Family of the owners heh...

I used to work for a small company where the daugter of one of the partners was employed as a secretary. I was responsible for network security and had to repeatedly explain to the partner why his daughter was risking the company by illeagally downloading songs on p2p. She shouldn't have even had the ability to install software on her pc, but that was a whole nother can of worms.

She actually had the nerve to complain to him when I completely cut off her net access, thankfully the other partner had the intellegence to see where the problem really was.

Excuse me, but she was NOT risking the company. The company could NOT be sued for what she was doing, period and done with.

The RIAA and MPAA have tried that with family-owned businesses before, and the courts have said that they can only go after the person who DOWNLOADED the illegal files.
Which, makes it impossible to go after anyone because it is hellishly hard on a shared network that doesn't keep records of who downloads what (the business I work less than part-time for doesn't anymore), it's impossible to prove who did it.

And I'm sure your boss appreciates you spending your time being an internet tough guy on a message board thread about gaming equipment and using profanity.

I'm sure you're going to reply that it's your day off, or you're at lunch or some such lie, when we all know you're some unemployed loser who lives with his parents and plays WOW all day.

I agree with Stosh68, Lord 666 is an idiot.

Who says that's their policy? Besides, nothing better than working with something you enjoy to learn about the latest technology, small companies need people who test out everything to stay on the cutting edge.

measures in place or independant audits
(Hey “CIO,” learn to spell independent) If he's the network admin, who do you think would put those in place (even though I'm sure we're talking about less then 10 computers where this sort of thing doesn't hurt anyone)

If hes the network admin anything he does he can delete... And I know for my work. I am also the admin we don't have a policy for computer use I tried to get one in place and the people up top didn't think it was necessary. A lot of companies don't have these kind of policies and thus you can't break them if you don't have them. Also as the network admin he would know if he was using resources that were needed or not. And A lot of the time the Boss doesn't know jack shit about what goes on the computer systems and networks. That is why he hired a network admin because thats his job.

Each work environment is unique and varies greatly based on the vertical the company is in.

Typically a network administrator is lower on the totem pole (sometimes even one step above techsupport) and is responsible for maintaining the network's status quo of working and mostly responsible for moves, adds, and changes.

Agreed about the boss sometimes being clueless, but there is an integrity issue at hand. What does the boss do when he walks in and sees a PS3 plugged into the network? There is no valid reason to have a gaming console connected to company resources, unless you work for a gaming developer or Gamestop. Someone mentioned "testing," that is not a valid excuse. They can spend their own time at home and do that kind of playing.
