New single-chip MCPs confirmed for mid-2007 on Intel platforms

DailyTech had the opportunity to sit down with NVIDIA insiders and discuss upcoming chipset technology.  NVIDIA's nForce 590 Intel chipset might not have grabbed as many headlines as the company would have liked in 2006, but that will not deter the company from giving it another shot in 2007.

MCP73 is NVIDIA's headline integrated graphics chipset for Intel in 2007. It will come in no less than three flavors.  The main chipset, dubbed MCP73P, is a 1333MHz front-side bus chipset.  A cut down version of the same chipset, dubbed MCP73PV, will only feature a 1066MHz FSB.  Our sources would not reveal the third chipset, although is it likely a derivative that does not feature integrated graphics.

MCP73 will launch with single-channel DDR2-667 support only. No SLI support will be present either, but a single PCIe x16 interface will allow users to upgrade to a more powerful graphics solution.

Intel's Bearlake chipset will initially come in two varieties at launch in Q2 2007, G35 and G33.  G33 is very similar to MCP73P, though NVIDIA's integrated graphics cores have always performed better than Intel's in real world testing and benchmarks.  However, Intel may have the advantage in timing; MCP73 is not expected to launch until June 2007.

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed to DailyTech MCP73 is on its way. "We believe that Intel based customers will demand the NVIDIA GeForce branded motherboard GPUs and we expect an enthusiastic response to our launch later this year," he commented.

NVIDIA would not disclose to DailyTech which GPU the core utilizes, but a low end G70 core is likely the best candidate.  MCP73 IGP will feature integrated HDMI and HDCP support.
