Device will likely soon air on Verizon's network

A new HTC phone may be soon giving the Motorola's Droid 2 a run for the slider smartphone crown.  Shots of the HTC device first leaked early last month via Android Guys.

The phone has now been confirmed, thanks to testing results posted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.  The pictures shown by the FCC clearly indicate a Verizon logo on the faceplate, meaning the device is likely coming to America's largest carrier -- and soon.

The device has a 4-inch touch screen, microSD memory expansion, a rear-facing camera with single-LED flash, and a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard.  Despite having a smaller screen than the HTC EVO 4G, it has a wider footprint.  Part of the space is likely devoted to extra modems.  The phone features dual 3G modems -- a CDMA 2000  connection (which includes EV-DO Rev. A access) and GSM 850 modem.  Plus it packs Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz.

Why is the dual 3G modems significant?  They allow the phone to communicate with virtually any network around the world.  Also, very few phones are dual-mode capable.

The phone is rumored to have a 1.2 GHz processor, but then again the HTC Vision (T-Mobile G2) was rumored to have one too, and it turned out to only have a slower 800 MHz design.  Given the poor battery life on the majority of HTC's devices (a day or less), hopefully some of the extra space goes to more battery real-estate as well.

The phone bears roughly the same dark grey (outside) and cherry red (inside) plastic color scheme as the HTC EVO 4G.

The FCC release refers to it as the "HTC PD42100".  The internal code name is unknown at this point.  The phone will likely be rebranded with a new "Droid" name, though, since it's headed to Verizon (à la the Droid Incredible).  Thus we probably won't know what final name the phone will bear until Verizon officially announces it.

CDMA2000 includes EVDO rev A and B, which are considered both 3G. If you are saying it supports 2G then that is the old 1xRTT.

If it has a 3G voice/modem, it needs to support UMTS/HSDPA. GSM is 2G.

If possible please post the freq it supports on said tech. 850Mhz means only Att.

Obviously I meant Att is the only one that supports 850mhz; Europe and T-Mobile in the states use 1700mhz and 2100mhz for the other 3G system.

No one seems to have to worry about what freq is used for CDMA since only a handful use it.

Uh that would be the Nokia n900 for best slider. When you factor everything from a better multitasker despite slightly slower processor.

Able to access 3.5G web speeds vs. just 3G

32 GB of internal storage vs. nothing for the DRoid2. Droid2 comes with 16gb total with 8 from internal and 8 from expandable. If you want to expand the n900 you can and totally trump the droid.

Able to access Virtual memory which makes the available memory much higher than the 512 that the droid2 comes with.

Droid 2 does have slightly bigger screen so that is a plus for it.

Both have 5 megapixel camera.

n900 in addition to having mp3 player, which with the higher storage, makes it able to store more music, but it also has an FM transmitter, and fm player.

both have standard stuff like bluetooth, and WiFi, and calender and other stuff like that.

So how again is the Droid2 with the crown for best slider???

Is this some kind of joke? Even if it weren't based on almost year-old hardware, the N900 is a chunky brick running an OS no one has heard off featuring a totally awesome resistive touch screen. It did have some innovations when it came out, like the front facing camera, but face it; you can literally walk blindfolded into your favorite carrier's shop and point in any random direction and still land on a phone with better features, better hardware, and better apps. Plus, marketing a un-subsidized phone in a contract driven market like ours makes you a non-entity in the smartphone wars, as the dismal sales of the n900 have proven.

The N900 is nice for those who remember the brick-style PDA era as the good old days and want to go back there, but this thing can't compete with what HTC offers today, nevermind that black aircraft carrier with the red slide out keyboard up there.

In your haste to defend your choice of hardware, you seemed to fail reading comprehension and realize that the author was trying to make a comparison to slider smartphones available on the Verizon network .

Even still, I'd put the n900 in the trash next to a Droid2, much less one of Verizons other Android handsets.

I seem to recall an article not too long ago about a Droid Pro with these specs coming in November. Votes on this being it?

I guess the title "New HTC Android Slider Offers Both GSM , CDMA 3G" didn't give it away.

Also where is Windows Mobile even mentioned in the article?
