New Droid X Ad  (Source: Droid-Life)
Motorola says "No Jacket Required" for Droid X

Apple has found itself in some hot water with its latest iPhone 4 smartphone with an antenna design that looses signal strength when it is exposed to the user's skin. Apple later offered all iPhone 4 owners a free case to eliminate the antenna issue and started offering refunds to those who purchased a bumper case already.

Motorola is now taking the chance to capitalize on the flaw in the popular device with attempts to bring unhappy iPhone 4 shoppers to their brand..

The latest Droid X ad set to hit newspapers today shows the Droid X smartphone with the tag line "No Jacket Required." The tagline is alluding to the fact that the Droid X will work without a case. The ad describes:

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly.  That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design.  The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket.  For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

The Droid X is a capable smartphone by most accounts, but the antenna issue isn’t doing much to slow the sales of the iPhone 4 with shortages and waiting lists persisting in many areas.

This makes me sick. Why are people waiting in lines for something that has serious hardware problems? Apple fanboy or not, please don't encourage these large corporations to design and release hardware that is extremely flawed. Sit your fanboyism to the side for a second and make them understand that you want quality...

The number of Infomercials should tell you that its a huge client base. The idea that Amway was once large enough they wanted to buy UPS is a sign. Items like anyone can be a stock trader with online account causing a stock bubble. Then everyone makes millions in real estate causing a housing bubble and recession.

Never underestimate stupid people in large numbers.

The people buying the iPhone 4 are basically trying to buy an identity its not about buying quality.

So, basically those stupid people were buying the iPhone because they want to be acknowledged as a "Stupid People" (who bought something way overpriced)? That doesn't make sense! That would means that they basically are stupid enough to make themselves looks stupid becuase they're stupidly buying something without researching it first! :p

Damn, now I looks stupid! :p

Who cares? People are stupid and think it's the greatest thing ever....

The Droid X is still having supply issues, with my friends being told they may not get them until mid August, and they ordered the day it came out. I got mine at a store, and I absolutely love it. I can't wait to make my best friend (who's a devout crApple lover) completely jealous that I didn't pay a thing to make my Wii-mote work with my phone, so I could play ANY NES and SNES and Genesis AND Playstation game on my Droid X...for free. Do that with your iphone....without spending $0.99 for every single one. (bear in mind, he won't jailbreak his phone either)

Let crAppleheads enjoy their badly designed phone. Mine works. Period.

A turd in a chrome box may have superior hardware to a turd in a cardboard box, but a turd it still be. Comparing the iPhone 4 only to previous iPhones is a clever way of disguising it's lack of competitiveness with other current handsets.

Personally, I'd pay no heed to the fawning online reviews of the iPhone 4. They're as bad as the people who buy them just because its an iPhone. You'll generally find such sites rip holes in phones that come out with a flaw like the iPhone's antenna issue, yet happily forgive Apple for such a serious oversight. It really ruins any sense of objectivity they claim to have.

As for Apple's dealing of the reception issue, it is a complete joke. Jobs makes a public statement which is little more than "the iPhone is the best phone on the market....look at how other phones are more rubbish than ours," then offers to fix a hardware fault by giving people a piece of rubber to wrap around the phone. Admittedly it is a better solution than being told "you're holding it wrong," but it's not really a fix.

It's amazing how much Jobs gets let off being so arrogant towards his own customers.

Because you're just holding it wrong. there is no issue with iPhone 4. according to our "lab test", all other phones have this issue, here is an example of the phones we have tested :) Not to mention we are not Gods, we are not perfect. Here is a 50 cents ugly rubber that we sell for 29.99 ... oh I mean here you can take this and it should take care of it. for those who don't like our rubber design, that means you have no taste and might as well get a refund, stfu and leave Apple already, we still have tons of morons ... oh I mean tons of loyal losers .... oh I mean fans to buy our product.

Well for one, they probably don't know.

The other is that while the issues surely exist, in practice, only those in low signal areas will be affected in the first place. (let alone the fact that many people use cases on their phones anyways)

I'm not trying to justify anything, I can just see why many people don't care.

Your mode of thinking is that everyone is an informed buyer, and that is just not the case. There is also the fact that many phones have issues, you just don't hear about them because its not Apple.

For example I own a Palm Pre, and I know for a fact that many have gone through 3-4 devices, there just hasnt been much press about it. Other phones have issues too, but once again you don't hear about it. The N1 for example is still capped at 30fps, nobody knows why. If this were Apple the media would be all over it.

I do agree with you, the issue is large enough where the sales should of at least took some noticeable hit even if it was small. On the other hand though, keep in mind i don't own an iphone, any of the iphone 4's I've used weren't unusable even if you hold it "wrong". I still think its rather sad that people settle for simply usable from a company that prides itself on "superior quality".

In some cases, because they don't know about the issue. In others, because they don't care.

On ARS, after repeated testing, they could not get the iPhone to drop one call using the iPhone antenna bridging issue. They did observe a degradation in signal, but could not drop a call.

Considering this, it's reasonable that people who otherwise really like the phone would consider it a non-issue.

Personally I would not buy one, but it has less to do with the antenna problem than not wanting to be stuck buying Apple apps.

My guess is the majority of them don't know the problem exists. Sure, if you read tech blogs all the time it's common knowledge at this point. I'd wager most of the consumer's don't read them though.

Now to single anyone out, but to make a valid point, how many women do you see post on tech sites? How many women do you with an iPhone?

I've used my two coworkers constantly to outline this extremely strange behavior and personality disorder. Worse now, we have a new EE that is heavily into Apple as well.

The first two are bright engineers. One if our Sr Software Engineer and the other is our VP of Engineering. The VP is the absolute worst. Take the antenna issue for example. He clearly knows it's a design flaw/choice but to make himself happy his argument is that he doesn't hold the phone so he doesn't understand why there is such a big issue over it. He uses a headset. I'm serious, this is his ONLY reason.

The software guy is my friend, a good one at it...but when it comes to Apple I stay away from the subject. He will at least listen to what I have to say but at the end it's always "....just get an iPhone." I have been looking into the EVO 4G one day and he came into my office and saw what I was doing. Without knowing anything about the phone except that it's Druid base, he immediately commented that I should just get an iPhone. I mean LOL right?

The new EE guy seems to be a complete ahole judging from this...you decide. First day and we took him out to lunch and have a good time. My first question to him upon seeing his iPhone...

Me: Oh, you have an iphone too.
Him: Yes, what are you going to do about it? I also have stocks in the company. Does that piss you off?
Me: No, no, I just noticed you have an iphone as the other two has them too.

End of conversation and end of my relationship with this ahole :) Seriously, from that comment alone, he is defending something he knows is wrong but can't get over it.

So there you have it, I'm surrounded by 2 bright engineers and 1 new one that are die hard Apple supporters :) No reason at all except they love Apple and will buy a brick with an Apple log if they need to.

Cuz they overpaid a piece of garbage, they know they fucked up, but in order to avoid the "I'm with stupid" look, they have to make shit up to make them look great.

I'm ok with the stock part because as an investor myself, Apple's stock is not bad at all, As we all know how many morons out there like you said, will buy a fucking brick with Apple's logo on it if they have to. so their stocks are doing ok. but I am not that "buying Apple's brick" person. thats all.

Good start - excellent indicator that you're not an idiot.

quote:

Because there are hordes of people on this planet who *are* idiots. For example, each and every person who has ever bought an Apple product, or is waiting to do so now.

quote:
Apple fanboy or not, please don't encourage these large corporations to design and release hardware that is extremely flawed.

The hardware is all but irrelevant. Apple consumers are not buying technology. They are buying a self-image. They are complying with marketing propaganda. They are expressing their individuality by doing what the TV tells them to...and by doing what everyone else is doing. Hardware has absolutely nothing to do with it.

quote:
Sit your fanboyism to the side for a second and make them understand that you want quality.

They don't want quality. They want iPhones. They don't want anything other than what the TV tells them that they want...and it doesn't matter whether or not it's a POS, and they will not ever put the slightest thought into such a purchase. Apple consumers categorically are not interested in technology or consumer electronics, nor the quality thereof - it's a cultish social conformity phenomenon, powered by rabid consumerism and the greatest marketing ever seen.

Well, this begs the question... Is their entire population of early-adopters 100% Apple fanboys? These are the people who would buy all their stuff, and probably lie about not having problems even if theirs arrived DOA. I'll trust CR and Anand to tell me there is a problem, but "Joe on the Internet" doesn't get credibility when he says, "everything is *fine*, go buy one, ignore those electrical engineers, they don't know crap."

Major companies will change their way of doing business when most of their customers are "typical." It's just a fact of life, but anyone who is an "early adopter" will be willing to put up with garbage.

My favorite company in this regard: Oppo. They had an open-beta on their flagship BR player. If you bought one of the first units you could join a beta program and interact with the firmware developers to improve the unit. You could post a bug, and they'd write back, "Thanks for spotting that, you'll see a fix in the next build or two." That's *class*.

All we need now is for Motorola to launch a new TV ad campaign. Two guys standing around in a spartan environment.

"Hello, I'm a Droid X," says one.

"Hello, I'm an iPhone," says the other.

Droid X is standing there, looking cool in his t-shirt and shorts. iPhone is wearing a thick winter coat. iPhone has sweat pouring down his face.

Droid X: Why are you wearing a coat, iPhone? It's boiling out.

iPhone: Oh, I need this coat to work. If I take it off...

iPhone takes coat off. Their mouth continues to move, but Droid X looks baffled as he can't hear any sound coming out. iPhone puts coat back on.

iPhone: ....which pisses people off, but I work just fine with the coat on.

Droid X: Well that must be annoying for you in this weather. Fortunately, I don't have to sweat to death in order work properly.

iPhone: My coat makes me look cool.

iPhone keels over from the heat. Droid X shakes his head.

And somewhere Bill Gates is killing himself laughing that Apple finally got what was coming to them.

His phone rings, he looks at his iPhone and it's a confidential call. He picks it up:
»Hello, is this Mr. FooBar?
»Yes...?
»We found your resume online and you are perfect for a position we just opened. How's your current employment situation?
»Well, the crisis hasn't been very kind to us developers.
»We believe your profile is perfect for our needs and are willing to compensate you very well. Our proposal is 150k/year, good health insurance with a dental plan and yearly stock options bonus depending on performance.
».... (his mouth is hanging wide open)...
»Are you there?
»Yes, yes...
»Of course this is all negotiable. You should come in and we'll discuss it better. How does that sound?
»(closeup of the guy shifting his grip on the phone) I'm currently working.... *call disconnects*

Guy looks at iPhone... takes a deep breath and screams:
»BUT I'LL TAKE A PERSONAL DAY! OF COURSE I WILL! I WOULD LOVE TO!!

Everyone is staring at him... Someone whispers:
»Time to buy an Android...

The iPhone sales aren't being slowed down because the Droid X isn't the iPhone killer. the Samsung Captivate and Epic are. As soon as the market realizes how superior the Samsung models are, the sales will shift.

I've had 6 Samsung phones, and all of them still worked years after I upgraded. I've had 2 Motorolas, and my parents had 5. Of all those, only one worked for more than a year. Few people trust Motorola's reliability, which keeps the sales of the Droid and Droid X down. I certainly don't trust them.

I need one that lasts at least 2 years, because my contract does. Sure, my old Krazr was cheap when I got it, and it was easy to operate and nice looking, but I just didn't think I'd have to replace it after a year and a month for as much as I would have spent on a nice Samsung phone in the first place.

cheap things don't pay off. you wind up paying some time anyway.

Depends on the people though, I still have my razr (second gen razr1) and the kids use it to play all the games & take pics with it of random stuff. My wife had a kyocera Koi (I thought it was a silly phone, but she really liked it) that got ran over by her car, dropped in the pool, and then snapped in half. If she hadn't switched service to get on my plan, she would still be making phone calls with that thing, it just refused to die. I have know others who's koi died for no reason that they could figure out though, so it is still kind of a "luck of the draw" with modern electronics. My luck has been pretty good on the 2 motorola phones (have an old brick phone that would work if I wanted to use it from 1999 too, lol).

Your individual anecdotal evidence of reliability is worth bupkis.

Although Samsung has made some good phones they have made some amazingly bad phones. The Samsung Glyde comes to mind first as one of the least reliable devices ever made by man.

The upcoming Samsung devices are good, but really not better than Evo, Incredible, or Droid X. They are all just different, which is the entire point of Android. Apple sells one new phone each year with a choice of GBs (giggle). There will be literally dozens of Android devices this year that are all both similar and different. Every consumer is free to pick the carrier and the device which best suits their needs and budget. The Android platform itself is the 'iPhone killer' and each new device adds another blow. The true Apple sheeple will never abandon their beloved product, but for people just looking for a tool and not a religion the Android platform will have something that is perfect for you.

Either 'loose' has become the new 'lose' and nobody told me, or you need to proofread and not rely on lame tools like spell check and grammar check. Not picking on you, specifically, almost all 'journalists' at this site are guilty to one degree or the other. Apple makes me sick with their lies, deflection, and inability to own up to making a mistake.

I owned an Apple IIc when I was a kid, but quickly moved to other platforms due to its shortcomings.

The IIc was a piece of junk. My TI 99/4A, which I had years before the IIc came out, was superior in nearly every way. The only advantage the IIc had was it could display 80 characters per line on the screen, making it better for word processing.

I moved on to an Amiga after the IIc, which used the same Motorola processor as the MAC (68000) but was light years ahead of Apple's stuff (full color graphics, math co-processor, custom graphics chips, etc).

I learned first hand about Macolytes at that time because I was in college and met a Mac guy that insisted his "black and white" graphic MAC was somehow better. I showed him what my Amiga could do, but he still insisted his MAC was better. I just laughed at him.

Finally, I made the jump to a PC because I was a software developer, and needed a machine that could do C/C++, and not just BASIC. Objective C wasn't yet available.

When Apple almost died a decade ago, Microsoft dumped a ton of money into them because they knew they needed competition or they would be considered a Monopoly.

It's funny that for that kind gesture on MS's behalf, Apple has been totally dissing them. They seem to forget that MS saved their 4$$.

The screen makes the 3rd look like a community access channel. The interface is easy to use and I love the new features. With all that being said, I also want an Evo! It is like fighting between a 360 and PS3. They both rock.
