ASUS A8Jr brings ATI's Mobility Radeon X2300 to the forefront

ASUS today announced the latest addition to its popular A8J family: the A8Jr. The A8Jr takes advantage of Intel's latest Core 2 Duo processors and makes use of ATI's new Mobility Radeon X2300 GPU.

"There is an ever-increasing demand for higher graphic processing power and crisper graphics for entertainment and applications alike," said AMD's David Cummings. "Our answer to that demand is the X2300 GPU. This GPU utilizes patented technology to increase processing power and provide the user with smooth, realistic hi-resolution graphics."

The press release doesn't mention much about the Mobility Radeon X2300 GPU but it does note that it will feature ATI HyperMemory and will provide a superior "performance-per-watt" than competing solutions. The new GPU is also fully certified for use in Windows Vista.

When it comes to the A8Jr's other specs, it looks just like the rest of its brethren. The Intel 945PM Express chipset is used along with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945AGP 802.11a/b/g adapter. A 14.1" WXGA+ (1440x900) display is included along with five USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard slot, VGA and DVI connectors and an optional Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.

The 5.27 pound notebook should be available for purchase within the next two weeks, but pricing is not yet available.

I wish ATI did a better job of naming their products so i could figure out which one was fastest easier. Nvidia makes it easy with 4,5,6,7,8 series. I Wish there was a list i should see that would separate the gpu's from desktop and mobile, integrated and discreet, fastest to slowest. with Nvidia that task is easy, but ati...

ATI is just about as simple. The gererations have gone like this

9000 series (9200, 9600, 9800, etc)
x800 series (x200 (integrated), x300, x800, x850, etc)
x1000 series (x1100 (integrated), x1150 (integrated), x1400, x1600, x1700, x1900, etc)
now
x2000 series

within each generation the higher the number the better the part. The lowest 1 or 2 in a series are typically integrated. They also use extentions like NVIDIA (SE, Pro, XT, XTX) to further subset within a particular model #.

The only tricky part can be researching across generations. i.e. an x850 will outperform an x1400.

I don't know if their general naming scheme is all that difficult (X1800, X1900, X2000, etc.). I think the bigger problem is all the damn suffixes (XTX, XT, GT, SE, Pro, GTO, GTO2, etc., etc.).

Agreed. ATI is practically the same as Nvidia with respect to the naming system. With Nvidia, we had the following generations:

GeForce
GeForce 2
GeForce 3
GeForce 4
GeForce 5xxx
GeForce 6xxx
GeForce 7xxx
GeForce 8xxx

With ATI, it's been

Radeon
Radeon 8xxx
Radeon 9xxx
Radeon Xxxx
Radeon X1xxx
Radeon X2xxx

Is that so hard to follow? 8, 9, X, X1, X2. Yes, things get screwed up when they bump a last-gen card to have a current-gen name, but don't forget the king of this kind of thing, the dreaded Nvidia GeForce 4 MX, which had absolutely nothing to do with the actual GeForce 4.

Similarly, both parties are equally at fault with the damn suffixes. I wish they would just change the number rather than add a suffix. Kind of like ATI did with the X1950 (although of course they added prefixes there as well). There are two extra zeroes there at the end of the number, just waiting to be changed. C'mon Nvidia, why not an 8820 and an 8850 instead of GTS and GTX?

Had nothing to do with the Geforce 4? Your wrong there.
The Geforce MX440, Was Indeed based on the Geforce 2, But with some tweaks and added technology's such as: Lightspeed Memory Architecture (LMA), Z compression, occlusion detection, anti aliasing and display units from the GF4 Ti, full MPEG2 decoder (Something that the Geforce 4 Ti Lacked).
The MX440 Is most of the time a little slower than the Geforce 3 Ti200. And Lacks Pixel shading, And Vertex shading has to be done in software.

Did you forget about the Radeon 9200 Series? That based on the Radeon 8500, The Radeon VE was also renamed to the Radeon 7000.

And the First "Geforce" Wasn't called "Geforce" But rather called the "Geforce 256".

Agreed, though I think there are community driven tables like that somewhere online.

In addition to simply having increasing numbers mean better performance, it would be nice if they had a simple way to compare mobile-desktop parts too.

so that say the X2300M would be equivalent in performance to the X2300 desktop.

If you want a quick comparison check out Tom's or Notebook Review - they have lots of GPU rankings. Just keep in mind that almost every author is somewhat biased - but they will get in the ballpark.

am I missing something? where are these other 8 series cards? A 512mb[256bit] card for less than $200? Wouldnt you smack around the 8800's ($400-600) with two 8600's (~$400)?

I am sick with anticipation of the R600 based ATI/AMD cards. Since the merge, we havent seen much new come from the Red's... odd to see the first new card come in a lappy?

There are lots of websites that keep very good information on nearly every GPU ever sold. However I try to diffrentiate my list from the rest by only showing cards that I see selling.

i figured that, but the point remains the same. There was no of knowing by the name that this is an architecture change. With nvidia every architecture change, means they change the series number (4,5,6,7,8,...). The point I am trying to make is, i hate the way ati names their products. ATI makes great products, but their naming scheme just confuses their customers.

Hypermemory doesn't necessarily mean replacement in the low-end arena. The MR X1600/X1700 also utilize Hypermemory so that they can have up to 512MB of RAM available to the GPU (that includes the 256MB dedicated RAM on the MR X1600/X1700).

Anyone know if all the x2000 series are supposed to be DX10 capable? I'm assuming these will be based on the R600, but I can't really back that up. I've seen conflicting reports.

Still, nice to see that's just around the corner. I've been waiting for a portable version of the G80 - nothing coming soon that I can tell.

Everything they've done in the last while would seem to indicate so.

Only a few of the 8500 series that got renamed to 9X00 were ever inconsistent, otherwise all the 9x00 were the same feature set, as are the xX00 and X1X00 cards.

I haven't seen anything official from ATI... er, AMD, but I would assume that all X2xxx parts are DX10. Although you would think ASUS would pimp a stat like that in their press release if it were so. Of special interest to me is that this laptop features an AMD/ATI GPU on an Intel platform... if it uses MXM slot, then you've got a little NVIDIA flavor in there too!

No, these are just X1000 parts renamed after the merger. Not new technology. You don't see new technology first in the notebook area.

Do a search on: ATI x2300 renamed (you will find plenty of comments on this trickery)

I agree with all the posts about the video card nomenclature. I think AMD/ATI should do a brand name refresh. Radeon has been in use for 4 generations of product. They should have a whole new brand identity in time for Vista the release, and emphasize that (i.e. new Windows, new generation of graphics). At the same time they could introduce a more consumer-friendly naming system.
