EVGA, BFG, Biostar and ECS affected, ASUS unaffected
NVIDIA’s nForce 680i SLI was announced back in early November. The nForce 680i SLI was expected to be the Holy Grail for users expecting achieve maximum overclockability out of their Core 2 Duo processors. However, things haven’t been too peachy for users that rushed out and purchased nForce 680i SLI based boards. Users that purchased “Designed by NVIDIA” motherboards that were essentially clones of the NVIDIA reference designs were faced with problems with the SATA controllers.
NVIDIA describes the problem as: “Some NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI "Designed by NVIDIA" motherboard customers have reported experiencing disconnect or write error issues with SATA disk drives.” Reports of the problem started showing up immediately after the nForce 680i SLI motherboards became available.
Nevertheless, NVIDIA has since addressed the issue. It appears the problem has been fixed with a simple BIOS update. NVIDIA urges users to update to latest BIOS available from the board manufacturer. The update addresses the following SATA controller problems:

Random application shutdown
- Corrupted boot drive
- "Blue screen of death"
- Corrupt data
NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI based motherboards from EVGA, BFG, Biostar and ECS are affected. EVGA and BFG have issued BIOS updates while Biostar and ECS are expected to follow suit soon. The ASUS Striker Extreme is unaffected as it is not a “Designed by NVIDIA” model.
