Hardware NVIDIA Prepares New AMD IGPs

New GeForce 8 series with DirectX 10 graphics coming next year

NVIDIA plans to update its budget AMD chipset lineup with two new GeForce 8 series IGP and an IGP-less solutions – MCP78. The new MCP78 features the MCP78 U with a $70-80 build cost, MCP78 S with a $55-65 build cost and the MCP78 D with $50-55 build cost.

The MCP78 U and MCP78 S feature a DirectX 10 compatible graphics solution with unified memory architecture and PureVideo HD technology for high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray playback. NVIDIA touts new Hybrid SLI technology for the new IGP solutions, which it claims to boost performance of discrete GPUs.

NVIDIA claims performance boosts up to 40 percent with Hybrid SLI technology. Hybrid SLI technology enables discrete and integrated graphics to work together to provide increased performance. The MCP78 series also supports Hybrid Power technology, which shuts down the discrete GPU for low-power and quiet high-definition video playback.

All MCP78 solutions support one PCIe x16 Gen2 and HyperTransport 3.0. NVIDIA expects mass production of the MCP78 series in December with a January launch.

You would already think it would be with the old Radeon 8500.
And the new Geforc 8500 series.

If I'm understanding this correctly, it could be an ideal chipset for HTPC computers that you also want to game with. I haven't taken the DX10 plunge yet, but was looking into getting a HTPC with the ATI cable card tuners integrated for my yet-to-be-built media room. However, i wanted an 8800 so I could game with it as well.

Apparently, HD media playback is problematic on the 8800, even though they are supposedly HDCP-enabled. The 8600 or ATI 2600 are apparently more reliable in HD media playback. However, it seems like if you had one of these, you could use the integrated card for HD playback and the 8800 for gaming.

I've just read the following Nvidia pages and the news is somewhat disapointing.

PureVideo is only listed for the MCP78 (7050PV+630a) combination. All the other AMD chipsets and none of the Intel chipsets have PureVideo HD.

There is no details thus far, but what would be good is if the new chipset fixes the HD Audio problem that all current HDMI video cards seem to suffer from (i.e. the problem whereby the chipset supports HD Audio, but the video cards can only accept SPDIF-grade audio for HDMI pass-through).

I think you have to since thats when they're releasing it. Unless you want to take a different route.

I really wanted this new chipset but I am not willing to wait 4 more months for it. I'll likely buy an existing motherboard. Maybe I could buy a cheaper one now and the new one later?


Hybrid SLI

I guess that up to 40% better performance is if you plug in the lowest 8400 series graphics card? So this integrated graphics chip probably performs at 50% of an 8400 on its own...

Still it is good to have updated integrated graphics, and the chipset otherwise is presumably pretty good, and nice to see HyperTransport 3 support.

Yeah, I'd definitely much rather see real SLi though I know the market for dual graphics on a mATX board is small. There was that one s939 board by Biostar a while ago, and that was it.

Still, I was in the market for a decent mATX board and weak SLi is better than nothing I hope. HT3 indicates that it is designed as AM2+ I suppose.

Hybrid SLI sounds awesome. I was wondering when somebody would get around to implementing it.

Does Nvidia have the technology like ATI... that with the third video card, one of them becomes a dedicated physics processor?

It would be nice to have sli... plus this integrated one acting as a physics processor.

Indeed, I've been waiting for this for a while now. While I'd imagine the SLi boost from onboard graphics isn't going to be phenominal on a higher end card, the fact that I can get a higher end graphics card and only need to power onboard graphics while browsing the internet, viewing movies and other non-3d intenstive tasks is just sweet.

Definitely a move in the right direction IMO.
