We've all known for quite some time that it was coming, but now it's official

We've brought you news over the past month of notebooks featuring NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX GPUs in an SLI configuration from Eurocom and WidowPC. NVIDIA has now officially announced what we have all known about for quite some time now.

"Desktop PCs featuring SLI technology still had the performance edge. They needed that edge because of the higher resolutions desktop monitors," said Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of the GPU business unit at NVIDIA. "Now gaming notebooks with extreme HD resolutions of up to 1920×1200 are here, requiring more processing power so gamers can still turn up their 3D quality settings. SLI technology delivers that power—creating high-performance notebooks for gamers on the go."

Partners geared up and ready to ship SLI laptops today include Sager, Alienware, Velocity Micro, and Voodoo as well as partners ABS, AJP, BioHazard, Cybersystem, Evesham, Gericom, Hypersonic, Multirama, Olidata, Plaisio, ProStar, rockdirect, Rombus, Savrow, Vicious PC, XS2, and Wortmann.

Speaking of VoodooPC, it has announced the ENVY u:909 which measures 17.5” x 12.5” x 1.75” and weighs in at a lap-crushing 16 pounds.

Loaded with a feature-set sure to have PC gaming enthusiasts foaming at the mouth, the Voodoo ENVY u:909 is also perfect for LAN Parties and mobile gamers alike.  Featuring the biggest notebook display on the market today – a 19” high resolution mobile gaming display with a resolution of 1680x1050, the u:909 allows users to experience a sharp, vibrant display with plenty of workspace for any application.  On the inside, the AMD Turion 64 processor allows users to increase overall performance dramatically without any additional heat load from the processor.

talk about DTR

since the 7800gtx already burns >3x the power of a dothan or yonah (when gaming) and >10x the power (when idle), I can only imagine the run times on battery with 2 of them!

With a (relatively) big battery like a 80Wh, you'd be talking under an hour while just browsing the web and like 20 min in a game... hahahhahhaha

But it would be SWEET for a lan party, I guess.

You could always plug the power cord in...

That is the problem... you can't always plug in the power cord. this is not the "laptop" if you like to game on an airplane, or have a class where there isn't an outlet, etc.

but i'm sure it's great for a lan party (as I said) because there is a power outlet.

This is obviously NOT a computer to tote with you everywhere. It's a desktop replacement that's easlily moveable from location to location. With a screen like that, I don't think it'll even fit on your lap in the seat.

Probably the reason why it is 16 pounds is because of a huge battery solution.

1680 * 1050 seems kind of low

I get 1680 * 1050 today on my 3 year old 15.4 inch x1000. I can't believe they are actually using the same resolution on a 19 in screen. I could have gotten wuxga 3 years ago too, (but the dpi would have been too much), and three years later they are putting wsxga on a 19 in laptop? doesn't make sense.

I have a 1920x1200 on my 15.4 incher.... I can't believe a res that low on 19 inches...

I should get one to replace my boiler for the house. I'd be able to keep my place VERY toasty running one of those laptops..

Yeah, I'm sad that I just bought a gaming laptop only to find out that now a newer laptop can both game AND cook a steak.

Assuming that the voodoo pc announcement on this article applies to the sli thing....

What? why would you want a low res screen with sli (no point)

What? why would you want a turion in something with SLI? so... the graphics cards are burning about 100W.... so why not go for it and throw in an FX60.... it'll still use less than the video cards

I can see them making quad sli laptop soon as well. This is more like desktop replacement then a laptop.

Nice but...

A very niche product. Aprt from [very] rich LAN'ers and for the bragging rites who would buy one?

I bet you'll need a power brick the size of the Xbox 360 to power that thing. Hope it comes with a carrying case =)
