NVIDIA claiming Sapphire will produce GeForce 7950GT and 7900GS graphics cards
New NVIDIA graphics cards for all

NVIDIA today officially announced its GeForce 7950GT and 7900GS graphics processors. DailyTech previously reported NVIDIA was expected to unveil three new graphics cards in September. GeForce 7950GT based graphics cards are expected to retail for $299-349 and come equipped with 512MB of video memory to play those new games in ultra quality. Graphics cards based on the GeForce 7950GT will have 24 pixel-shaders like the outgoing 7900GT and higher end 7900GTX too. GeForce 7900GS graphics cards retail for $199-249 and have 256MB of video memory and 20 pixel-shaders.

All GeForce 7950GT and 7900GS will have 256-bit memory interfaces and sport SLI compatibility and have SLI bridge connectors. GeForce 7950GT cards will have HDCP compatibility standard across the board no matter which manufacturer produces the card to playback HD DVD and Blu-ray movies.

Availability of GeForce 7900GS graphics cards is immediate while GeForce 7950GT graphics cards will arrive on September 14th, the same day ATI is expected to ship Radeon X1950XTX and X1900XT 256MB graphics cards. GeForce 7900GS and GeForce 7950GT graphics cards are expected from the usual manufacturers including Asus, BFG Technologies, Biostar, EVGA, Foxconn, Leadtek, MSI Computer, PNY Technology and more. NVIDIA’s press release also states Sapphire Technology as a manufacturer of GeForce 7950GT and 7900GS graphics cards. DailyTech spoke to Sapphire Technology which has denied any intentions of producing NVIDIA based graphics cards. Sapphire remains in the same position of manufacturing and selling ATI-based graphics cards and main board solutions.

I've still got AGP, but it seems there's little reason for me to upgrade. The uncertainty of Vista, HDMI, HDCP, DirectX 10 all make me want to not upgrade until something definitive is figured out. I certainly don't want to upgrade now (I've got the ASRock board with both AGP & PCI-E) and find out 6 months from now I need another upgrade to do the things I want to do with it.

Assuming the number of pipes, core clock, memory clock, etc are the same, there is very little difference in performance between AGP and PCie.

But of course, most manufacturers only equiped the newest and fastest technology on PCIe cards. Considering the number of people who are still using mobo with AGP, I'm surprise there is almost no AGP cards with today's technology.

7900GS pricing

Let's see what the actual pricing will be.

>200$ sounds way too much considering that you can get an X1900GT for a lot less than that. Doesn't look like a bargain. X1900GT is very close to 7900GT depending on the game and the GS version has 4 pipes less than GT. I believe the 7900GS will be priced a lot closer to the X1900GT.

Where are you seeing X1900GTs for <$200? Other than the Connect3D on NewEgg at $200 but only after mail-in rebate, most of the X1900GTs I've seen are upwards of $250! These 7900GS cards should do quite well, and can already be found for $190 after $10 rebate.

Competition is good for the consumer no matter what. If NV and ATI want to keep releasing new GPUs, it's going to keep driving down prices of older ones. (Like the X1900XT 512 that suddenly plummeted $120 over the summer...)

Does this mean that production is ceasing on 7900GT's and 7900GTX's? If so, I better go snag another for SLI now...
