Hardware NVIDIA, AMD Launch New Video Cards

NVIDIA launches its GeForce 9800 GTX and AMD announces the world's first DisplayPort graphics card

NVIDIA today officially launched its high-end GeForce 9800 GTX. The 9800 GTX was previously expected to launch last week, but an 11th-hour embargo change shifted the launch to this week. The 9800 GTX replaces NVIDIA's 8800 GTX as the new single-GPU high end card.

The 9800 GTX is based on NVIDIA's G92 graphics core. The card features 128 shaders, a 675MHz core, a 1.69GHz shader clock, and a 2.2GHz (effective) memory clock. The card also comes with 512 MB of memory on a 256-bit bus.

One of the main features of the 9800 GTX is its support for 3-way SLI. For this reason, the cards feature two SLI connectors on top. Unfortunately, NVIDIA limits this capability to only NVIDIA chipsets.

The new card requires users to plug in two six-pin PCI Express power connectors. It also comes outfitted with a larger cooler compared to previous NVIDIA cards.

The 9800 GTX features a suggested retail price of $300. Comparatively, this sets the card in direct competition with AMD's 3870X2, which is available at the $400 price point.

In addition to NVIDIA's launches, AMD today announced its FireGL V7700 graphics card, which features a DisplayPort output. According to AMD, the card is the first workstation graphics card that comes equipped with a DisplayPort output.

The FireGL V7700 is based on the AMD RV670 graphics core and comes with 320 stream processors. It also features Shader Model 4.0 support, 512MB of memory, and PCI Express 2.0 complaince. AMD says the card has a maximum theoretical memory bandwidth of 72GB/s. 

AMD Guidance says the card will sport a $1,099 retail tag. The first batch is expected to begin shipping next month.

Isn't the normal price for the top card usually up near $600? This would be a steal for the best nVidia single GPU card.

I personally don't consider high end cards a steal unless it really is a lot cheaper than expected. What's a real steal is like the 8800GTS for $115 after rebate on NewEgg

im running 8800gtx in sli, and my kids have 8800gts 320mb in sli all running amd 6400+ processors, as far as game benchmarks go, we come out with the same FPS (in some games the GTS came out ahead), the only time there's a noticable difference is with 3dmark 06 where the GTX will pull off about 500 more points, so i would hardly call the 320mb a crappy card, in fact running the GTS 320mb version in sli will beat out the GTX single for about the same price

yes i do run high end games like crysis, and it runs incredible, if it didnt i would upgrade ,but damn i wont get your nod (my life is so incomplete especially from someone thats completely lost, and talking out of his butt)

probabally would of if they made them a year ago when i bought them, and its 640mb

and as far as the 320mb goes theyre beating same config with 8800gt oc'd to 650mhz (XFX)

crysis is cpu bound. The athlon 6400 cant keep up with 2 8800s (my athlon 52 cant keep up with my one )= )
The 9800gtx isnt all that good. To use your logic, why not add another 115 bucks to it? voila! a 3870x2! Not only a superior architecture, also sli on a sti - excuse me - crossfire on a card. Or you could go 100 bucks down for the
same card with a different number and suffix (g92 8800gts)

I dont Know But everybody saying That 329dlls for the Geforce 9800 is a rip off, its not and you are way off.

videocard manufacturers years back where OK when middle cards where around 200 and high end 400 ....but after Geforce 6800 and X800 prices got stupidly out of control.... worst of all , people would pay for it!!!

i think as Tech in video cards is alot slower than 2 years ago Nvidia is getting to their senses and leveling overpriced Videocards.

And in Reviews Crysis is overrated!!! i Have a 8800GT (G92) and a AMD 5000 with 4 disk Raid 0 and run 1650X1050 at high settings and runs smooth!! so dont base your lives to some review.... test it your selfs if your gonna blabber like that..... i even have used a HD2600 in Half life Episode 2 and ran Perfectly Good Quality when Tomshardware said that i wouldnt be able to run more than 10FPS ....

People bought the 6400+? I like AMD just as much as the next, and want them to really pull out all the stops, but there's no getting away from the fact that buying anything other than Intel Core 2 at the present time is a horrible error

Because if you look at total platform costs, you can still build a really decent budget rig using AMD chips. Not just budget, either. The Phenom 9000 series chips can be had pretty cheaply, too.

If you're after maximum performance only, I would agree with you.

Thats an overclocked card though, so whos to say the GTX cannot overclock even further? But your talking high end here, it hardly matters to the people who buy these how much it costs but at 300...i'd also say its "cheap." Must wait until SC2 comes out.....must...before buying anything. But not only do these card costs more, the latest anandtech review shows that they do suck up tons of power so a stronger PSU is definitely needed. Wait until the winter and you can use it as a heater.

Not even that good. A while back XFX 9600Gt's were at newegg for 129 after rebate. 2 for 260 blow your deal out of the water.

SLI barely speeds up crysis anyway though, it's a bunch of crap.

I disagree and think that anyone who says they are a deal is LOST... Lost in a land of PR and adverts... You are payin that much for old tech.. Old tech that was shrunk and is cheaper to produce.. For anyone who went out and purchased a top of the line 8800 series and now has purchased this.. you have been ripped off.. You just purchase a renamed shrunk down version of the same card... Only good thing that may have come from this is cooler temps.. and with nvidia.. i doubt it.

Considering this is the Third time an 8800 series card is launched.. its no wonder that they are not super expensive any more.. I guess there will be a 4th time as 9900 with a die shrink of the GPU to 55nm, before we see any next gen card.

Or be like me and step up to the 9800GTX if they bought from EVGA. I bought my 8800GTS 512 back before the massive price drops, so stepping up to the 9800GTX costs me nothing but shipping.

The reviews that I have seen show the 9800GTX out-performing the 8800GTS 512, not by a huge margin, but still out performing the 8800GTS 512. If I did not have my free step up, I would not upgrade. I would wait for the 9900GTX due to release in July.

The subheading says first graphics card. The article then says first workstation graphics card. Palit has had a DisplayPort connection on its 9600GT models since they started selling the 9600s. Just a suggestion to edit that.

You didn't read my post entirely. Read it again and you see that I acknowledged that the article said Workstation Graphics whereas the subheading just says first graphics card (read carefully; does not say workstation).

But you not paying a premium price. Your paying a lower price. The GTS might be better bang after overclocking but not counting that this has better bang for your buck then the 8800GTX by far.

Ok, as most of us know, Nvida is still running last years chip repackaged. This is still an 8xxx card, the chipsets are pretty much the same. But one thing I have noticed is, the texture fill rate is much higher on the 98xx cards, over clocking the core on the 8800 GTS (92) doesn't seem to compensate for that, is there a way to boost it?
