The GeForce 7900GTX uses the same cooling solution found on the 7800GTX 512MB
The 90nm GeForce launch is almost upon us

Earlier today some preliminary benchmarks of GeForce 7900GT and GeForce 7900GTX were leaked onto the internet pending the March 9, 2006 launch.  

System Configuration:
Athlon 64 FX-55 
1GB DDR400 (2x512MB)
nForce4 motherboard

All tests were performed with a 1280x1024 resolution.   The cards tested claimed 1.2ns DDR3 for both cards.  ForceWare 84.12 was used for testing.

GeForce 7900GTX 512MB
650mhz core clock, 1600MHz memory clock
3dmark 03: 17800
3dmark 05: 7600
3dmark 06: 5200

GeForce 7900GT 256MB
450mhz core clock, 1300MHz memory clock
3dmark 03: 13800
3dmark 05: 7000
3dmark 06: 4550

For reference, 3dmark06 on a similar system scores approximately 4700 for a GeForce 7800GTX 512MB running at stock speeds. 

We already had a fairly thorough look at GeForce 7900GT, GeForce 7900GTX, and GeForce 7600GT -- all expected to launch just a few days from now.  The Quad SLI ready GeForce 7900GTX will launch on the 22nd of March.

too low increase?

500 points increase in 3dmark06 doesn't seem to justify the purchase of the 7900GTX, though 3dmark benchmarks rarely tells the whole picture. Plus, those scores might change at launch.

I'll wait and see if it'll be worth using my step-up program from evga to upgrade my 7800GT.

eVGA has a program through which you can trade in your eVGA cards for a newer one, if you're within 90 days of purchase. It's a nice program and a great incentive to purchase their products.

When they first started it it was 2 years. I pre-ordered a 4600 from them and 2 years later got a 5950 Ultra for $100. If they had just released the 6800 a couple of months sooner...

Oh yeah, and absolutely use your step-up now. They're not releasing any more cards within the next 90 days as far as I know. Might as well get it while you can. You just call them then fax your form in for approval to the number they give you. Then ship back your card. It kinda sucks to not have a video card for a week or so though.

I think (well, hope! :-> ) the idea this time round is not to make something dramtically much faster, but to make it CHEAPER.

Just ran same bench using 3d05, 1280x1024 on an amd64 4000 stock,x1900xt stock, 3dmark05 9567. :)

Pretty unfounded assumption, based on what we know by now. It will probably put nvidia back on par with ati's top product, losing some here, winning some there. It will ultimately come down to price. And since ATi will slash their prices at G71 launch (the XTX will drop by $100), we all gonna be the winners, no matter which product we buy.

March 22 for the Quad SLI version. The regular SLI version appears to launch on Thursday with the rest.

Agreed.

My primary concern aren't the benchmarks. I will be more than happy if the 7900GT has the same performance as the 7800GT. My main concern is operational temperature underload and power consumption. A simple die shrink should allow both. A lower price is also good too since more GPUs can be created on the same size waffer.

I'm looking at building a powerful (CPU/GPU), but very quiet PC.

Hmm,
My system is almost totally silent. Abit's passive heatsinks, Zalman CNPS 9500 and my arctic cooling silencer make it so. I would venture to say it is also pretty powerful.
To the guy that finds our benchmarks pointless and frustrating...not only is your superior tone insulting and superfluously ingratiating, but imho, your just jealous you can't post any bechies worth a squat.

Any article about high-end graphics is an excuse for guys to stand up and wiggle their little e-pecker around.

The fact is, no benchmark is "worth a squat" when there are other variables to be considered. Not mine, not yours. It's a condescending tone because frankly, if you consider yourself a power user (which you obviously do) you should understand this.

Yes those scores are correct, rmember it is at 1280x1024, not the deafults.
The GOOD: If the new cards are really priced like they are supposed to be this will make a great upgrade or new card for people.
The BAD: Not enough improvement for me to justify buying one, especially since I assume I will have to get a new card in 6 motnhs anyway for DirectX10.
The UGLY: How my face will look after my wife sees the CC bill cuz' I had to buy one anyway =)!

Guys,
Please look at the article, the scores as I said are all at 1280x1024.
Your not beating the 7900 with your 7800's lol, but yeah it is close.
My scores are a pretty accurate comparison, albeit my card is overclocked, but thats a stable clock I have been running at for 3 months.
All in all these cards are very good for the comsumer, especially since it means lower prices for the ATI cards as well. The insanity of $800 7800gtx 512's made me think the prices were going to keep going up, down rocks!

I think ATI will just barely maintain it's performance crown. The real danger is that 7900GT. With all 24 pipes and, if the article is correct, it has the same RAM modules as the GTX it is going to be one heck of an overclocker. When you consider that it will be the best bang for the buck stock you definately see the value of that card.
I was so excited about the 7600 but at 12 pipes and 128b bus... I'm so disapointed. It took two years to make that hunk of junk?!. All to make it pin out compatible with somthing that is two years obsolete. I want rant some more I'm so mad.

I agree with Discord. I'm tired of the last generation mainstream cards being almost the same as the current generation cards. Seems to me that a budget card should have like 8 pipelines, a mainstream should have 16 and the enthusiast should have 24 (for nvidia's cards at any rate). ATI could do the same sort of thing but with a combination of pipelines and vertex processors.

Oh well, I guess 20 years from now we will have like Alien technology video cards, but the mainstream ones will run the Alien technology at 128-bit memory and 12 pipelines.

The 7900GTX wasn't a let down for me. Any one that had inside information to the card knew it was just a die shrunk 7800GTX.
The stupid inquier got everyone's hopes up with a fictional 32 pipe card. A die shrunk 7800 that outperforms a 512 7800gtx while still maintaning power and heat envenlopes of the original is good enough for me. I mean, after all, it's not a new design or anything just a shrink to make the company more money.
I'm still pissed about the 7600 though. I knew it was going to be a 12 pipe pin compatible card to the 6600 but I had this secret hope that it had been two long years and that NVIDIA had upped the design. Damn you Jane Pauly! Why don't you just go home Jane Paully?! Uughhheww... Jane Pauly!!!

The 500 point bump over a 7800gtx 512 is good considering they are positioning the cards to be less than ATI's by at least $50 and considering the X1900XTX is far from raping the 7800gtx 512 this is gonna be good. The 7900GT looks like a 24pipe product at those clocks if its $299.99(supposed price 399 for 7800gtx512 and 499 for 7900gtx) I think its worth every penny especially if you are into overclocking. Not sure I would recommend a 7900GTX 256 or 512 consider the 1900XT(X) should still be faster and ATI has better overall performance with AF and AA at max with high resolutions. These 90nm parts should also come with very nice factory overclocks from evga, xfx and bfg; so the scores we see here should really just be taken as a starting point

3Dmark is just a synthetic benchmark that doesn't necessarily have any bearing on how the card performs in the real world.

I have a Gig ram, 7800xt eVGA 518. Opteron 165.
I don't care if I can upgrade it to run my games at 1400x1050 (westinghouse' 20in monitor) to between 195 and 215fps... refresh rate on monitor is set to 85, I never see below that. FarCry and Doom3 are sick. Please, someone get over it. No, i'm not playing Fear, but Half Life 2 do look Purty...

I hope these numbers don;t change!
Makes me much happier about my 7800gt scoring 17000 on 3dm03.
Thats at 495 of course but it is rock stable there.

I'm not a fanboy so I could care less if Nvidia's 7900 outperforms the x1900.

All and all if these releases can drop the EVGA 7800gt (expecially the copper ones) down to $260 or so, then this is great for the consumer!

LOL aye..the driver reclocked my 7800GT to 490Mhz core/1.12 Ghz memory and i get these scores

03 - 17172
05 - 8401
06 - 4550


that is also using a dual core opteron clocked at 2.42Ghz

Wouldn't we expect there to be a bit more of a difference between the GT and GTX scores than that? Maybe it's hideously memory-bandwidth-limited? (Come back Bitboys, all is forgiven! ;-> )

I think DT's numbers are flawed

The 3DMark05 numbers seem way off, here's what I get using my X1900XTX:

CPU: AMD 64 X2 4400+@2.64 GHz
Memory: 2 x 1 GB
Card: BB ATi X1900 XTX @ default speed
Control Panel Settings: Default settings (textures/mipmap set to quality)
LOD: 0

It is important to note the CP settings because people can fudge with scores by setting mipmap and texture quality to high performance and setting LOD to 10. Here is the screenshot: http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/9799/x1900xtxjo...

I'm so sick of shelling out $$$ for a new video card/processor/memory/whatever every six months. That's why I bought an XBOX360. $499 and no more upgrades for 2 years... I'm lovin' it!

PC gaming is getting too expensive these days. Soon they will be trying to sell us all Physics processing cards too. Then I will be forced to buy Winblows Vista for $200 so I can play Halo2. LOL LOL LOL!
