The Final Four will be shown in 3D in select movie theaters
CBS
will make its first entrance into live 3DTV broadcasting during the
NCAA men's basketball Final Four tournament that caps off a hectic
last month of college basketball.
The 3D NCAA basketball games
will be shown
in about 100 theaters nationwide, designed to bring together fans
to cheer on their teams with other fans. The NCAA worked with
LG Electronics and Cinedigm Digital Cinema to make the 3D broadcast
possible.
The games will have different network announcers
than the regular tournament according to the CBS – the duties will
be handled by Steve Lappas and Dave Ryan.
CBS didn't announce
plans to carry any additional 3D programming in the immediate
future. Depending on the ratings CBS receives from attendees at
movie theaters, it's possible other CBS content will be shown in
3D.
Similar to the rise in popularity of high-definition TV,
live sporting events are expected to have an immediate benefit for
3DTV. Fox showed NCAA BCS football in some theaters, and the
company expects to partner with DirecTV to show the MLB All-Star Game
in 3D as well.
Although very few consumers have 3DTVs
in the living room, it's a growing technology that manufacturers
and movie studios hope to embrace in the future. CES 2010 had
products ranging from custom 3D glasses, 3DTVs, 3D
Blu-ray, and other 3D-related content.
