Casual games to hit MySpace in 2008

MySpace, the Internet’s largest aggregator of casual users, today announced a partnership with games company Oberon Media to in hopes of making a collection of casual games. The two companies will launch in early 2008 “MySpace Games,” which will enable MySpace users to choose from hundreds of online casual games to play with friends in the community.

After implementation of the new feature, MySpace users will be able to add games to their profile pages as well as challenge friends to multi-player games, invite them to play the same single player game or socialize via chat services within the game.

“Bringing entertainment in the form of fun, social, casual games will enhance our user experience,” said Amit Kapur, VP of Business Development for MySpace. “Our goal is to provide our members with an easy way to play with their friends and give them with additional ways to interact.”

“We’re very excited to be partnering with MySpace to provide the best social networking casual games experience to its growing audience. Our white label casual gaming solution is allowing us to create a customized games platform that delivers a great experience to MySpace users,” Tal Kerret, Co-Founder and Chairman of Oberon Media commented. “We’re looking forward to responding to users’ needs and to involving the best game developers to create the greatest online entertainment experience. The opportunity to give MySpace users the chance to share the fun and socialize within this rapidly growing media segment is thrilling.”

The two companies said that there will be “further community initiatives” resulting from the partnership to be announced in early next year. Interestingly, the press release asks budding game developers to submit their ideas for new social gaming titles to myspace@oberon-media.com. Development will supposedly be supported by a specially created software development kit, perhaps in a move that could lead to community-created casual games.

A recent study concluded that casual gaming is the most popular online entertainment activity, ahead of streaming video and even social networking.

At present time, the games.myspace.com page states that MySpace is launching a new games section, and asks users to stay tuned for updates.

MySpace.... how I hate thee. Because everyone loves reading about these kids who post all of their personal information on the web and talk about their feelings in great detail. It's a wonder someone hasn't shut it down yet for allowing the posting of personal information. Back when I first started using the 'net (1992) come hell or high water, you did NOT post any personal information. Everyone used handles, nobody posted age, location, occupation, nothing. This was just a generally accepted standard and only around 1998-1999 did I see that start to change. Places like MySpace do not due the internet credit. In any case, yea wow so you can offer interactive games of the style we have enjoyed for more than a decade on the MSN Gaming Zone (Remember that lol), and numerous other similiar sites. How about working on cleaning up the number of drive-by spyware and ad-ware installers all over MySpace pages?

Remember to breathe. And don't drive angry. MySpace (never been there myself) is what it was created to be. A mindless meeting place where the unwary are preyed upon by the predators.

What? Some of you think it was created to give voice to all the downtrodden angst filled teenagers and idiots of the free world. Don’t be naïve. The very ugly reality is that any public place is a hunting ground for everyone from a person looking to find a date to a person looking to take your cash and yes even to the lowest sexual predator.

MySpace is simply a new public place.

If people treated MySpace like their local town square very little mischief would take place. First off you would not have four million teenagers screaming at the top of their lungs about how mommy just grounded them for life. And when the stranger walked up to them and asked them for a picture of them naked they would scream and run for a cop.

But no that isn’t what they do is it? According to the teenagers and idiots, everyone on MySpace is kind and concerned about all the perceived slights that society, mom and dad, and their friends have heaped on them. It is a wonder that any of them grow old enough to learn better.

Given the age of MySpace it is still new, and remains to be seen how much the users "grow up". We can check back on this and debate in say 10 years though.

MySpace really is the scourge of the Internet...

Though it's a good place (from what I hear) to stay in touch with people, it's also a haven for drug dealers, pedophiles, and the people who are too young and/or too messed up to know how to keep out of trouble there. And let's face it, MySpace couldn't be less cool....

Wow you people are annoying. It was created as a social networking site. People abuse it, just as they abuse anything. Don't knock something, or give it a negative connotation just because of this.

The number of people that use it for legitimate networking compared to the number of people that only use it to be sexual predators isn't even close. Go take your opinions based on a few scare tactics elsewhere. They're uneducated, and annoying.

Aaaaaand stopped reading.

Truthfully I did keep reading anyway but your second sentence negates everything else you say.

You said yourself that you haven't been so you really have only a vague idea of what your talking about. Get a myspace yourself before blabbering crap on the internet (which is what people do on myspace anyway so you'll probably like having one)

There's good uses of myspace and bad uses of myspace. I use it to keep tabs on several good friends and acquaintances that I have known for many years. It just a good way to share info, updates on eachother's lives etc etc.

Obviously there is the "bad use" of mysapce too, which includes most of the 12-20yr olds using it as a place to actually "meet" people and become "friends" with. I just don't get that at all.

But as a centralized location online for me to msg, discuss, joke and dare I say "hang out" with real friends of mine, I find no fault in it.

Just as everything in life, myspace is simply what you make of it and nothing more.

Not that theres anything wrong with your use, but I find email works just as well.

Everyone has failed to mention that you can make your profile PRIVATE so that any information you added is only viewable by people you choose to read it. Not all MySpace profiles are public knowledge.

FYI, just because YOU don't use something doesn't make it suck. I'm sure there are millions of happy MySpacers who would disagree with you and say they love it and use it everyday.

It's like someone on the outside saying "I've never used DailyTech.com - so therefore it must suck!"

Wrong, I've never used it however I have done much research and seen first hand the results of using that thing, if you want spyware, adware, browser hijacks, all delivered through driveby's courtesy of MySpace then its all you could ever want...... MySpace, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany. You must be cautious there, and watch your step.

You make it sound like the second you sign up for an account it gives "the bad people" instant access to your computer and they can inundate you with viruses, adware and other unwanted programs that will bomb your entire system.

C'mon. I think you exaggerate a little.

This is why I believe this generation will be one of the dumbest since the middle ages.

Idiocracy (movie) here we come.

This is why us as parents need to teach our kids about how you live on the internet like you do real life. Don't talk to strangers, don't pass out personal information, among all the other morals that need to be taught. I refuse to go to the movies anymore because all these teens and kids with cell phones ringing and them talking during the entire movie. This is the generation that we are looking at. This is why we need to set these laws and standards NOW before it becomes a problem. I have had a myspace profile since not too long after it became live and I have seen it just degrade into a crap filled "whine about something" website.

Anyways I would rather them put their resources into the spyware and spammers and true crap before jumping into the gaming arena.

Well, hell hate them, Kenobi. The airline attendant who posed for "social reasons" on her plane and was fired... the 13 year olds who try to act like adults.. and their parents... hey, hate them, not the company that makes a profit off of them.

Better yet, give your co-workers and bosses and political opponents free reign to misuse anything you post and take anything out of context, and give them ample time to do so if they choose....

Never did Myspace, never will.

I don't do myspace either, never have, it's distasteful. Then again, I noticed that my HR department checks myspace when people come in for interviews. It's actually part of our background check now oddly enough. I can get behind the idea though, maybe more companies should check these "social networking sites" before hiring.

Unfortunately thats not really legal to judge a person by an internet site like Myspace, as there is no proof that the person actually setup the page - or even knows its there. With the amount of false profiles, as well as identity theft online, you not only can never trust the predators online, but you cant trust the profiles that seem "legit" either.

The NY Times ran an article on it a while back that several employers were reviewing MySpace profiles during the interview process. Ah found it.

I wonder what would happen if a company said they decided not to hire someone based upon their myspace profile. I would smell major lawsuit against the company since the company cannot prove it was actual that individual who editted or created the web page.

Not saying the companies shouldnt do it...if its public, then its fair game. Some people are just idiots i guess.

By Master Kenobi (blog) on 10/23/2007 2:45:41 PM , Rating: 2
Dunno, they can't discriminate based on Age, Sex, Religion, Ethnic background or anything like that, but I'm not sure if any laws prevent someone from hiring you for acting like a fool. Not that you could prove it anyways, most HR departments are very hush hush about what criteria they use to pick one person over another.

RE: Don't hate the player......
By Spivonious on 10/23/2007 4:04:41 PM , Rating: 2
The company can choose not to hire you because you wore black shoes to the interview instead of brown shoes. There is no basis for a lawsuit.

I don't see how it's NOT a good idea to check a person's Myspace. Everyone's profile is customized to them. If I were to consider someone for employment and they seemed like a good fit, then I checked their profile and all of their pictures are of them getting wasted I may reconsider. It's just another way for employers to see how a person choses to present themselves other than at an interview.

As for me, I'm 22 and have had a profile for 3 years now... I have gotten in touch with people I never thought to hear of again and stay in touch with other people from previous bases I have been stationed at. Myspace is a wonderful networking tool if not abused. As previously mentioned, you can make your profile completely private if you so choose. Don't knock what you haven't tried out for yourself!

A lot of people, including this site, express their disdain for MySpace simply because a few bad apples have spoiled the bunch, so to say.

Don't blame the creator of MySpace, he created an awesome thing where you can find friends, family, etc. easily. It isn't his fault that a few EMO kids jump on and post bulletins telling people where to find their bodies, or predators hunting for 11 year old girls who don't know any better.

You guys are seriously almost as bad as the news is on topics such as MySpace. Grow up, if you don't like it, don't use it... Calling it the "Scourge" of the internet is just plain stupid though.

Have a sense of humor, ANTIV6. Everyone knows World of Warcraft is the true scourge of the Internet. I was just making a point. BTW, everyone uses the same "a few bad apples" rhetoric but I doubt they'd feel that way if it were their son or daughter that was getting into trouble.

No one is saying the inventor of MySpace is to blame. MySpace is what it is but it wasn't made that way by its inventor. Also, we don't blame kids here in the U.S.. Kids aren't held to the same standard of rational decision making ability that our law-makers are... I'm not suggesting we blame anyone, I'm just saying it should be fixed.

Anyway, if you see OPR8R wrote it, don't take it so seriously...
