The popular free e-mail client from Mozilla is now available for download in a new 2.0 revision

The Mozilla Foundation has updated its Thunderbird 2.0 Beta 2 email client, which is a free download for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. The popular open-source e-mail client is scheduled for a final release sometime in March.

New features include folder views, session navigation history, better offline management, and improved mail notification alerts.

The update is available for download from Mozilla. For a complete list of the updates and changes in the latest update, click here.

I have been using Thunderbird for several years now, with varying degrees of success. It seems like I manage to crash my PC the minute I get Thunderbird working the exact way I want it to – not due to the e-mail client! I hope that this latest update from Mozilla proves to be useful.

For those of you not already using Thunderbird, it's a small, free program that I recommend trying at least once. If you have some questions about the program, here is a link to the Mozilla Thunder FAQ.

But i tend to stick with the using gmail online, it's just simpler.

However when they actually get round to integrating Sunbird/Lightening well into Thunderbird, I'll be all over it.
FYI for those who don't know Sunbird and Lightening are Mozilla's calendar application project, that have been in alpha/beta for way too long.

This is honestly the biggest reason why outlook still reigns, because it is a complete PIM system, with calendar/contacts/email etc.

I haven't found anything that really matches its functionality yet (on the mac nothing even comes close to Entourage).

Agreed regarding gmail.

I used Thunderbird to access my ISP's email, but once I switched to gmail and recognized how easy it was to access from anywhere and how much better it was than web email accounts of the past (hotmail, etc) I haven't gone back.

By the time I care enough to be fully connected with calendar & everything else I suspect there will be micro computer implantable directly in the brain along the optic nerve. For now I'm happy with my gmail. :)

OT, but so is the quote at the bottom of my DT window:

Mail, iCal, Addressbook. Each integrate quite well to each other and come with every mac.

Entourage is ok.

IMO Outlook still reigns because of Exchange. Does Thunderbird have Exchange capabilities?

Most people will use at home what they use at work, and for 100% of the people out there that is Outlook.

Outlook also is the target for contact Sync compatibility with smart phones and hand helds.

GMail is certainly nicer then Yahoo/Hotmail. But it's not yet a good business alternative to Outlook. GMail is useful though for consolidating many email accounts when you are a consultant though... ability to get at all your messages in one place through any browser is nice.
