Motorola W233  (Source: Motorola)
Motorola will launch several new phones during CES to try and become relevant again

In an effort to cash in as more consumers look for environmentally friendly products, Motorola has unveiled a new mobile phone created from recycled water bottles.

Prior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company showed off the Moto W233 Renew phone, which company officials are promoting as the world's first carbon neutral phone.  Rather than use the common plastic process, this green phone requires 20 percent less energy to manufacture.

The Moto W233 Renew offers nine hours of talk time, although Motorola didn't disclose pricing, carrier, or availability information.  T-Mobile issued a statement saying it plans to sell the recycled phone, but it's unsure if it'll be available through any other carriers.

The phone's packaging has been reduced in size, and the documents and box itself are made from recycled materials.  Motorola will give owners the option to mail back their old mobile phone so it can be recycled for free.  Furthermore, Motorola will work alongside Carbonfund.org, in an effort to offset "the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation."

Motorola expects to ship the W233 in the United States during the first quarter, with pricing still unknown.

Motorola has struggled as of late, and previously dropped down to be the No. 4 global handset maker.  The company's struggles can be blamed on its reluctance to release touch screen phones and 3G handsets, while competitors continue to release these phones.

The company is expected to launch a new 3G smartphone with Wi-Fi connectivity.

More products could be made out of recycled materials and ship with significantly reduced packaging. However the carbon offset thing is a total farce.

Yeah I've no issue with recycling. The carbon offset part will increase costs though, not lower them. Purely a political move to please hippies.

I've read a great many articles on carbon offsets/credits/trading that detail that the majority of any money being spent goes to executive salaries of these companies and that a great many of the projects that they do ultimately fail to offset even the carbon of the project itself, let alone the carbon that was paid to be offset to begin with.

Yup. Nothing but a pure money making scheme. Should be illegal. But they have the backing of people in the government and fools like Al Gore.

All so some idiot feels better about himself while not realizing he just gave money to allow someone to live it up rich. I think if I get laid off I'll start my own carbon credit business. For every dollar I get I'll kill a baby kitten. Lessens how much CO2 is being produced.

How about for every $1000 you get, you take out another carbon credit exec. It would be the old two birds with one stone thing, and quite poetic too. You'd probably get a book or movie deal. Nobody is going to make a movie about a baby kitten killer.

Then I'll be spending all the money on hitmen or lawyers.

I'm getting the impression that you have a man-crush on Mr. Gore... you post about him at least twice per day, even on completely unrelated topics.

Is it the thought of his plump, rosy-red cheeks, or is it his charming demeanor that keep you awake on those cold and lonely nights?

If they could only make a phone out of recycled toilet paper. You know if Apple did that millions would buy it.

Apple's attitude is,

"Who needs the paper?"
