Atrix HD should be good for business users and the average consumer

Motorola has announced a new smartphone called the Atrix HD that is billed as "Business Ready." The smartphone will be offered in white or titanium colors and has a Kevlar fiber micro-weave pattern on the back. The smartphone has a big 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost display and is covered with scratch resistant Gorilla Glass.

The Atrix HD runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the business focused nature of the phone means that it has government grade encryption protocols protect e-mail, contacts, and calendar and supports VPN technology to access corporate networks remotely.

Motorola has added features to help drivers be safer on the road including integrated Smartactions that are able to intelligently automate and suggest different ways to personalize the phone. One of these Smartactions is the ability to set the phone to auto reply to calls and texts and automatically enable hands-free conversations. If this mode is activated and you receive a text, the phone can auto reply letting the person know you're driving and can't text.

The phone can also suggest Smartactions that will automatically change phone settings depending on your location. For instance, you could set the phone to automatically go into silent mode when the GPS location resolves to your local movie theater.

The Atrix HD uses a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, supports 4G LTE technology, has integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G mobile hotspot technology, HDMI output, and a micro USB port. The phone also has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera for video conferencing. The phone weighs 140 g and the 4.5-inch screen has a resolution of 720 x 1280. The phone has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of ROM and internal storage can be upgraded via microSD cards up to 32 GB.

Exact pricing and availability are unknown at this time, however, sales of previous Atrix devices haven't been stellar for Motorola.

Never have i been a fan of motorola, but these features are enticing! i want just the features, branded HTC or Samsung. Haven't even googled how good their phones have been recently but the article makes me think dismal

This does look good, but I'm still waiting for something more mind blowing to come out. My SGS2 still has a lot of legs left in it, has official ICS support and even compares well to the current crop of phones, except maybe the SGS3.

I'm still waiting for a phone that I can dock and turn it into a full-on Linux desktop. Ubuntu's project looks promising, but I've yet to see it released. http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android/features-and...

Dunno about other moto phones but my Bionic is awesome, I have had no problems at all with it. I have been able to flash it with ICS but an official ICS will be out soon (one I flashed is a leaked version of the official ROM). My sister also has a Photon and it seems to be running well so far (she has had it for maybe 2 weeks though).

I may cancel my order of the galaxy S 3.....After seeing one in person I just hate the overall plastic feel of it. If this is anything like the build of the RAZR then ill get this.
Also, Moto's radios > *

Yep... I have played with one too... I hate the glossy cheap plastic feel of the SGS3 "top end" phone. Note that the Nexus version is pretty much the exact same thing.

I like the feel of the HTC ONE X over the Galaxy 3... but the power button at the top bugs me... Hmmm, there is the HTX with the kick-stand, but same power arrangement.

The other problem with Samsungs in general is crappy GPS.

I owned Moto Bionic for 3 yrs now and I loved it. Its dual core and amazingly fast enough for a smartphone and it definitely better than iPhone!

Why would anyone buy this?

The SGS3 and One X are better devices. And given Motorolas track record, their phones will get software updates later than any other current Android device. Take a look at Motorola s non-existing plans for updating the current Altrix! And of course non-US customers should not even think about buying a Motorola device as they will get no support. Take a look at Samsung or HTC instead.

But Google owns Motorola mobile... so perhaps its better now?

I'm not even sure what he means... The most recent Moto releases are all getting/already have ICS updates. At least the ones on Verizon do. Bionic, Droid 4, Droid Razer/Maxx.

Atrix is set to get ICS in Q3 2012 as far as I know, they might be slow but they are planning on updating it.

Huh?

8GB of ROM? What good would that be?

"Hey you can take 8GB of pics and video! But you can never delete it."

ROM is Read Only Memory, so I expect that you cannot add, update, or delete anything.

I expect it is actually internal flash storage, as ROM is rarely used these days.

Are pretty cool. Still playing around with them on my Razr.

I haven't owned a Motorola phone since my StarTac well over a dozen years ago, but this looks interesting.

I'll wait on the reviews and see how the quality and reliability stack up over the first couple months before I seriously consider jumping on this one.

Silent in theaters
By Trisped on 7/5/2012 9:28:54 PM , Rating: 2
I like the silent in movie theater idea, though it would be annoying if you were looking for your friends and could not contact them.

Normally I have my phone on vibrate. I may turn it to silent during a movie, but if I do then I usually forget to put it back, so I miss calls.

Lapdock
By The Jedi on 7/9/2012 12:32:19 AM , Rating: 2
This could be interesting with the Lapdock technology they had. Neither the Lapdock I or II have reviewed that well, but the idea seems to have promise. The original unveiling and their commercial kind of blew me away.

They could change it and turn it into a PadFone with a tablet adapter and optional keyboard. Leave what you don't need in the car...

Previous Atrixes had Pentile tech screens, so maybe the ColorBoost screen will be better.
