Attention Wii watchers: the Nintendo console you’ve been
looking for all year will be hitting stores throughout this weekend in
significant quantities. Large retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Kmart,
Sears, Target, Toys “R” Us and Wal-Mart will have dozens of consoles ready for
buyers.
Those unable to fulfill any childhood dreams of having a
Wii under the tree on Christmas morning will be able to do the next best thing
– the promise of a Wii soon. On December 20 and 21, those who missed out on getting
a Wii this time around can be assured of getting a console by late January
thanks a GameStop preordering program. A $250 deposit, essentially paying for
the full price of the console, will buy a ticket to Wii while supplies last.
Running alongside the retail news, Nintendo of American
president Reggie Fils-Aime addressed the media today speaking on the ongoing
shortages of Wii consoles in North America. Nintendo is presently producing 1.8
million Wii units per month, and has tripled the distribution efforts at a
North Bend, WA plant to help supply the product.
Even with more than half of the Wii’s entire monthly
production last month sold in the U.S., there is no date or plan for when to change
the manufacturing target. Nintendo did decline suggestions that it would start
making the hardware in North America to cut down in shipping times. In response
to the issue of how Nintendo transports its Wiis to consumers in North America,
Fils-Aime declined to provide any details, saying
only, "In terms of our distribution systems, I really don't want to
comment on that ... We are doing some unique things that are proprietary."
