Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime speaks on Wii supply

Attention Wii watchers: the Nintendo console you’ve been looking for all year will be hitting stores throughout this weekend in significant quantities. Large retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Kmart, Sears, Target, Toys “R” Us and Wal-Mart will have dozens of consoles ready for buyers.

Those unable to fulfill any childhood dreams of having a Wii under the tree on Christmas morning will be able to do the next best thing – the promise of a Wii soon. On December 20 and 21, those who missed out on getting a Wii this time around can be assured of getting a console by late January thanks a GameStop preordering program. A $250 deposit, essentially paying for the full price of the console, will buy a ticket to Wii while supplies last.

Running alongside the retail news, Nintendo of American president Reggie Fils-Aime addressed the media today speaking on the ongoing shortages of Wii consoles in North America. Nintendo is presently producing 1.8 million Wii units per month, and has tripled the distribution efforts at a North Bend, WA plant to help supply the product.

Even with more than half of the Wii’s entire monthly production last month sold in the U.S., there is no date or plan for when to change the manufacturing target. Nintendo did decline suggestions that it would start making the hardware in North America to cut down in shipping times. In response to the issue of how Nintendo transports its Wiis to consumers in North America, Fils-Aime declined to provide any details, saying only, "In terms of our distribution systems, I really don't want to comment on that ... We are doing some unique things that are proprietary."

Shipping from the orient to a warehouse in the US is not unique or proprietary. Increasing shipments across the nation is not unique.... so I am curious what could be so unique about a standard distribution method?

Didn't you know? Nintendo has perfected teleportation technology. That's what's unique and proprietary about their "shipping" methods.

If they had teleportation they'd also have replication, which would eliminate the supply bottleneck.

Sounds like they don't want some piece of IP to end up in North America.

Wii's are transported using trucks and ships fueled by the tears of disappointed children.

They are paying the Triad to smuggle them in from China without paying import tax. That's unique and proprietary.

It still won't be enough to meet the Christmas demand. What an odd position to find yourself in, if you're Nintendo. Obviously, production was scaled back during Gamecube years, and now they have the exact opposite problem. The store I work at has at least 72 on hand, ready to sell on Sunday. They'll be gone by the end of the day.

I have never seen a Wii in the wild, anywhere. And I frequent the big stores on a regular basis.

I'm actually currently in search of a Zelda-gold edition DS. I can't find one anywhere and I really wanted to get it for my girlfriend.

I was lucky enough to find one at a Gamestop five months ago. I was on a date and we passed the store when I got the feeling I should turn around. There she was in the window, calling my name and telling me to take her home. Since my date was boring I chucked etiquette and bought the thing. Good thing, too: I've never seen a Wii since. I never wanted to see the girl again, but me and my Wii have been an item since. Every man should be so lucky! ;-)

So now instead of being with a girl, you go home and play with your Wii???

16. Its okay to leave a party with a different Wii than the one you brought.
17. You can share a Wii with your friends.
18. You know when you're the first one to play with your Wii.

Have fun with your games console. I'll still take a woman of the real life variety.

isn't it amazing, how suddenly you're last and then in first? Just because of a simple feature? Seriously though, I thought Manufacturing would be less of an issue for the Wii compared to the PS3 and the 360, As you know the Wii is based upon the gamecube architecture, so I thought there wouldn't be any shortages anywhere, But I guess the Supply and Demand comes into play, anyone got any numbers on how many PS3's and 360's are produced in the same time as the Wii? (Thats Produced not sold...)

I already have a Wii, I'm hoping to get myself a 360 for Christmas and finally start cracking at Halo 3!

I was smart I guess, I got the Wii as soon as I could before any other console, as it had the most supply issues.
(Which in turn-sparks the Game developers pockets, and thus lots of games!)

Also anyone got any idea, when Nintendo is going to release different colored Wii's? I wouldn't mind a black one :)
Or that clear Purple or teal that they had for the Nintendo 64 back in the day.

Someone should change the icon for this page. When it first loaded I nearly crapped my pants. No offense meant to this guy, but it took me a minute to realize he's smiling!

Same here

There was some considerable span of time between when the article and icon had loaded and when the comments loaded, and I was trying in vain for a good twenty seconds to scroll down so that I wouldn't have to look at that picture. It was freaking me out!
