RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis shows off the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.  (Source:
First-quarter earnings results not likely to impress

The uphill battle for BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion continues to steepen. The Canadian company is expected to announce its first quarter results after markets close today, and as RIM predicted back in March, the results will prove to be disappointing.

Reuters reports that RIM will announce first-quarter earnings of $1.32 a share and revenue of $5.1 billion. That's at the low end of RIM's $1.30-$1.37 per share earnings prediction it issued in April. Current quarter earnings are expected to be $1.36 a share with revenue of $5.4 billion.

RIM promised a better full-year outlook, which hinges largely on the success of its PlayBook tablet. But rumors of a BlackBerry Torch and Storm smartphone updates remain just that — rumors, causing investors to get nervous Reuters reports.

"We believe RIM has now squandered nearly every opportunity and competitive advantage it enjoyed through ineffective R&D resource management, delayed product launches and misreads of the competitive environment," Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum wrote in a note to clients, Reuters reports.

But smartphone versions of the PlayBook tablet are in the works, according to RIM, and the tablet itself is set to launch worldwide.

According to a Reuters poll of 21 analysts, RIM is expected to ship 700,000 tablets in the current quarter. If results of first-quarter sales for the PlayBook prove to be greater than 370,000, that will already exceed low expectations. (By comparison, the iPad sold 2 million units in its first two months, and the Android-based Motorola Xoom sold 250,000 units in its first month.)

Never buy a stock after its started its rise, always buy after it drops. Buy low, sell high.

wow, i bet banks are knocking at your door to get more guru advice from you

o by your logic, since nokia and RIM shares have dropped, it is a wise move to buy the now?

Considering how the economy has tanked over the past few years, you can't feel bad that you bought at the wrong time. RIM has not been really innovative over the past five year though, so that should have warned you. Hell, Palm showed more innovation with the Palm Pre, and the biggest fault was the low-quality of the initial builds.

Now, I see Apple going the way of RIM over the next few years. MacOS X....still going strong since 2001, not much in the way of changes...stagnation. iOS...not really all that different from the UI perspective since the original iPhone...stagnation.

The companies that keep pushing, not just "new technologies", but new and hopefully better ways to use devices are the companies to watch and invest in.

Unless MacOS 11 is in the works and ready for release within the next two years, Apple is going to really get clobbered with people saying, "Why can't Apple do THIS?!?"

Who's going to buy 700,000 RIM tablets?

I love it when they estimate such numbers, remember Motorola and their Xoom?

businesses - for the same reasons why they use the blackberry over any other phones as corporate phone.

As a former BES admin (Blackberry Enterprise Server) I loved the reporting and control feautures of it...and hence really likes having BB devices for my users.

But since I no longer deal with mobile devices, I'd HATE to have a BB device.... I'll keep my droid thank you.

My boss handed me one to "playtest" last week, and I'm enjoying it immensely as a tablet. It's a practical size for portability, fitting easily into inside pockets of all my jackets - suit jacket, ski jacket, and everything in between. Excellent playback for HD vids that I don't have to squint to see.

That all said, I'm reserving final judgement until the Android sandbox is released. This product was definitely rushed out the door.

This doesn't look good

One service provider in a foreign country skips it and that's a scathing review? Meh.

Verizon skipped out on the iPhone. Did that say much about it?

Unless RIM fixes all of the PlayBook's feature's below, they will fail and their stock is gonna plunge even more. RIM please fix/add the following on the Playbook:

-Blackberry App world needs a back button in the MY WORLD in order to go back to the original page you were last at.
-After the 1.05 update, the old notifications of the App world show on the left corner of the notification screen
-Blackberry App world –from time-to-time the upgrade button switches location
-Blackberry App World needs an UPDATE ALL button
-Blackberry App world needs to be able to scroll side to side between titles: NEWEST, TOP FREE, TOP PURCHASED Etc...
-Major CODEC compatibility (I'd like to see an app that adds codecs too if possible like K-lite)
-Bridge doesn’t detect media files stored in my phone. It'd be nice if they added the ability to transfer/copy files back and forth as well.
-Bridge doesn't copy/Paste in email
-Can't see/send sms/mms messages
-Needs Swype
-Universal Search like OS6/7
-Turn-by-Turn voice guided GPS (I'd even be willing to pay for an App that can save the maps and updates on the PB as well)
-Spell Checker & add to Dictionary option like my phone.
-File managing for my apps and bookmarks. Be able to rename my bookmarks and arrange them in folders like Windows)
- That "Dot" in Android that easily helps you fix misspelled or change words.
-Native BBM App
- USB hosting to connect external devices like printers, Digital cameras and external Hard drives.
-Camera Zoom when using the video camera
Camera needs to shoot pictures quicker- feels sluggish to take pics
-Yahoo Messenger, Skype and OoVoO- what good is the front facing cam if you can't put it to good use!
- An App to remember my passwords so I don't have reenter them every time into the websites/apps login

On a different note- Here's a few accessories I'd like to see:
-A Dock that has full size USB, HDMI and possibly SDHC in addition to the MicroUSB. That way you can actually have better use for it than the rapid charging one they currently sell.
-a dock that lets you connect multiple devices to the PB via wifi/Bluetooth such as a printer, camera, or hard drive.
-Car dock for GPS
-Bluetooth Keyboard/mouse
