Several more companies make decisions on the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD war that is becoming increasingly more competitive

TDK, a popular choice for blank media like CD-RWs and DVD-R discs, has chosen Blu-ray over the rival HD-DVD format. Although only time will tell whether or not it was a good idea to side with only one format, many people believe that companies would most likely be better off embracing both next generation formats. The article also reports that Imation will be providing both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs to consumers.

With TDK making that nifty coating of theirs available on Blu-Ray discs as standard they are involved enough to make it in their interest that only Blu-Ray prevail. After all... without that coating Blu-Ray discs would still be in casing.

its the extra cost for hard casing :! you will never see the price go down below $1 if hard casing is used.

Plus it adds complexity to the players, making them more likely to fail.

Don't you see that's exactly why they wouldn't do it?

In what kind of product do we not see that to save a few cents they'll cut lifespan by 2/3 or more? Can't even buy cars these days without expecting tiny 5 cent springs to break and cost $100+ to fix.
