Sure it is. The crooks have to give twice the money to MS for their products. Having one banned console and needing to buy a new one is more money for MS.

The smarter the idiots think they are, the more PWN they become. SWEET!

And how is stealing all the games you want for free SUPPORTING the company in the first place?

By lewislink on 11/13/2009 10:33:30 AM , Rating: 2
Because your ass is still banned and in order to become unbanned...well...you know what you have to do...come on, whip out that MS money so you can buy their product (a new, unmodded XBOX) to become unbanned.

I love this stuff.

But do they really make that much money on the console, especially after the lowered prices. I'm betting not much.

Maybe they're hoping to boost their holiday sales in the ongoing console wars.

I still think most of the people that do this are not going to buy the games. They do it mainly because they like getting around the system. Even a kid with a paper route could save up enough money to buy a 360 and a few games. I don't think it's the money that is driving most of these modders.

Doesn't Microsoft still makes money per Xbox 360 sales, unlike PS3?

If one really hates Sony, one could buy a PS3 and not buy any software.

what about Console ID
By webdawg77 on 11/13/2009 10:13:15 AM , Rating: 2
According to the firmware, the new version is "undetected" by Microsoft's scan of the DVD drive.

However, wouldn't Microsoft have noted the Console ID's of the 360s that were modded? And if so, then no matter what firmware changes made to the drives themselves, wouldn't the Console ID still by the same? Thus, Microsoft would still have it flagged as a banned console.

This is all based on the assumption that nothing else is modded including the Console ID with the firmware talked about in the article.

Yea, I don't see how this will unblock the blocked consoles. Unless this has some way of changing your serial number of the console. I can see it working to keep boxes that have not been banned online if you do this update first. I signed up for the last 2 beta dashboard updates, and had to give my serial number of the console when signing up (through MS Connect Website). When I was selected to be in the beta, Live automatically downloaded and installed the beta as soon as my console connected. So I assume, as soon as you connect to Live, it checks your serial number, and if it's banned, won't let you on. If it's unblocking consoles, there must be more to it than just blocking a DVD Firmware scan or whatever.

Opps, missed that I had to put in my Serial Number AND Console ID.

The "software fix" link goes back to ixtreme 1.0 that was made back in 2007...

Fail article?

Nice catch.... certainly is 2007 in that link.

Not to mention there's nothing in the fix that's at all convincing that they would be able to prevent detection in the future.

Of course, if it really did work as well as this article suggests, why did 1 million people just get banned if this update was released in 2007?

Also, shame on dailytech for doing a pro-piracy article.

Those Already Banned?
By blaster5k on 11/13/2009 10:11:26 AM , Rating: 2
I'm assuming this doesn't work for those who already got banned, does it? Otherwise, I can see some people getting a really good deal from the ones who jumped to sell their consoles on eBday.

What is this fixing?
By invidious on 11/13/2009 10:15:09 AM , Rating: 2
I don't see how this "unbans" anything if all it does it prevent future scans of your firmware. Once your on the list, your done. Correct me if I'm wrong but the title of this article seems wrong, I dont see how this helps the million plus people who are already banned. If it does then it sure isn't explained in the blog.

Maybe the title is talking about the lifting the restriction from installing games to the HDD and all of the other "non XBL" restrictions that happened as a result of the ban? But again, not said in the blog anywhere.

dont believe everything you read

i would never trust this claim, especially from a bunch of people who just got owned by microsoft and is trying to save face by claiming they are now undetectable. bs, they will get re-banned in the next update.

solution: get a fucking job

how does this free those banned?
By anotherdude on 11/13/2009 10:19:34 AM , Rating: 2
sounds like it is intended to prevent future bans but I'm assuming the mac address of the Xbox is what got banned and that no tinkering with the DVD firmware will have any effect on that?

By jvc920 on 11/13/2009 10:19:43 AM , Rating: 2
I really don't feel bad for anyone that got banned. If you don't like it then either don't mod your system or even purchase it in the first place.

Also putting the link to download the fix for people breaking policy on the systme is in a why helping them. Let them try and find it.

Directly linking to help pirates?
By Squibby on 11/13/2009 10:42:19 AM , Rating: 2
Seriously? Are we supposed to think you guys have any integrity left if you're posting a link that helps pirates steal things? It's one thing to say that a new hack exists (if it even does, which is in dispute). It's something totally different to link directly to it. You might as well start putting links to the torrents of pirated games and other stuff.

As has been said, this is from 2007. It is the original mod the people who got banned used to run copied discs on their system. It does not unban anyone.

What did get people banned has been fixed 2 days ago on abgxi's website. It gets past the 4th wave issue which is what caused the problem for those running the mod on their system.
