Wireless carriers work together to envision and implement future mobile technologies

As 3G mobile services finally begin to surface in American markets, some of the large mobile carriers are looking ahead and preparing to plan what 4G services will look like to consumers. Wireless companies KPN Mobile, Orange, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile and Vodafone have joined forces and created the NGMN Corp. to help outline their future strategies.

The preliminary plan includes looking at ways to replace existing networks and allow for the cost effective implementation and delivery of mobile broadband services while staying within the standards of the industry by 2010. The group hopes to define a target architecture to further enhance and eventually replace current packet switched networks allowing a smooth transition from current 2G and 3G networks to 4th generation services.

The new group hopes it can be viewed as a future step in the evolution of mobile delivery services such as HSDPA, HSUPA, and EVDO allow increased broadband access among wireless networks. The group also hopes to tackle some existing issues in the industry including IP rights and cross network issues. Ominously missing from the list of companies backing the initiative are wireless carriers Verizon, Alltel and Cingular.

4G? Who cares.

How about making 3G data rates cheaper? Then, they should start worrying about 4G.

I agree, but from what I've seen, moving from one generation to the next does tend to make services cheaper.

Certainly, in the UK, the equivalent amount of 3G data is much cheaper than GPRS (2.5G) data, which is cheaper than GSM data was. The same thing is happening with voice as well - the 3G-only providers here tend to be providing very cheap voice calls, and are pushing the GSM providers to do so as well.

All in all, although I expect 4G to be a huge disappointment in terms of coverage and timescales, it probably will be a step up from 3G.

The slow adoption of 3G is just mainly because of the cost

How many of you send video calls?
I would love to but the price is too forbidding to me

Thank you, you win this thread already. Everyone wonders why 3G is slow to come to the US and this is a big reason why. For some reason the general public seems to forget that the US has alot more territory to cover, and hence more expenses in deploying new technology than say the UK... but thats ok because it makes for a good "where is my 3G service in the US?!?!" whine.

It just is not profitable here because not enough people even know what the hell SMS is, as in they think its the Sega Master System from the mid 80s, so I'm doubting the general population would even notice 3G if it slapped it in thier faces. Likewise the same situation with GSM in the US how the coverage is compared to CDMA/IDEM networks, at least where I live everyone and I mean everyone has a Nextel phone. It certainly makes sense in the UK/Europe where GSM is the standard and there is nothing else, but in the US you have to deal with *4* different standards!

Ya the Coverage is largert for US companies, but why is Evdo doing so well. There coverage is getting better and better everyday. while 3G is slow to be deployed. If they cant make money off video calls, Im pretty sure Verizon and Sprint are making alot of money off of downloaded music and ringtones off there EVDO Service. The US is very big, but at least Cingular could have done some portions of the country where they know they could make a profit. Which they have but it is still way to slow im my opinion.

This is because moving up a generation in technology increases bandwidth and usually the number of simultaneous users. More bandwidth + more users = lower price.

Vodaphone - Verizon Wireless

Vodaphone actually owns a pretty big stake of VZW, so it can be argued that they are not actually missing.

Since Cingular and Verizon are the two largest wireless companies in the US and T-Mobile hasn't been able to embrase 3G at all, I think 4G will be a long ways away. The only company to do anything well with 3G was Verizon and without competition I doubt that Verizon will want to upgrade everything again without the need. Cingular only has 3G because of ATTWS. I don't think Cingular has upgraded any of their towers since they purchased ATTWS

Yes, in the US.

We have a rather dated wireless structure compared to most of Europe and Japan. Innovation happens there and slowly is adopted here. You'll see 4G there way before you do here.

Yes, its also easier to roll out new technologies over much smaller geographic areas with higher population denseties.

what, they aren't even close to implementing 3G yet!

my verizon service offers strong coverage of 3G/EVDO in my area, greater Los Angeles.

it really does provide nice speeds and great content, but the main problem is the price, and also the hardware used. A flip phone screen is only useful to a certain extent because of it's small size.

We still dont have right working 3G technology and they are going for 4G. Hope its not just and we start seeing the 4G pretty soon. feed up with slower than dial up on my mobile devices.
