Mitsubishi is working on a new blue phosphorescence material for Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) screens which would allow it in the future to create large and efficient flat-panel monitors and TVs.

In comparison to traditional LCDs, OLEDs do not require a backlight, have larger viewing angles, and consume less power.  OLED screens have been used in everything from PDAs to cell phones to MP3 players, but they have not be used on a large scale in devices such as televisions or computer monitors.  Mitsubishi's announcment could help to accelerate the development of a cost effectinve replacement for today's LCD screens.
