Mortal Kombat publisher owes 240 million

Midway has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to gain more time to pay their debts which total 240 million. Midway is the publisher of the long running Mortal Kombat series of video games. Midway's debt consists of $150 million owed to various note holders (with Wells Fargo as trustee), and another $90 million owed to the publisher's former majority shareholder, National Amusements. National Amusements is headed by Sumner Redstone.

According to Midway one of the causes of their current financial problems was last November's "change in ownership," when then majority stockholder Sumner Redstone sold off his 87 percent stake in the company valued at $30 million for $100,000. As a result of the ownership change, Midway's debtors have the right to call in the company's debts if they so choose.

If Midway were to default on the $150 million debt, National Amusements would have the right to call in the $90 million that it loaned Midway.

The decision to file bankruptcy buys Midway time to reorganize. Midway chairman, president, and CEO Matt Booty stated, "This was a difficult but necessary decision." He also added, "This filing will relieve the immediate pressure from our creditors and provide us time for an orderly exploration of our strategic alternatives. This Chapter 11 filing is the next logical step in an ongoing process to address our capital structure."

The news is not all bad for Midway as they have shipped (not sold) roughly 2 million copies of their latest iteration of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. According to GameSpot, Midway was proudly playing up the fact their TNA Impact title has also shipped more than 1 million units, and its Game Party franchise had sold more than 3 million units as of the end of 2008.

Sheesh

A few years back, Midway's stock dipped down to around $1.60/share. I was keeping close tabs on their lineup and took a gamble. They were in rough shape, but aquired new leadership and had some titles in the pipeline that were creating a lot of buzz. Six months later their stock was over $13/share. Let's just say I walked away smiling!

This is sad, but Midway is a name synonymous with videogames - I would be surprised if they were not resurrected within the year. I'm not implying that anyone should invest in them... just saying you shouldn't count them out.

No, this is the perfect time for EA to come swooping in for the kill.

Oh please no, anything but EA! So many franchises have been swallowed and spat out as a mess because of EA, I'm still waiting for a Dungeon Keeper 3, Alpha Centauri 2 or hows about a System Shock 3? They were all great Franchises with nothing being done about them, as a Games Publisher they are fine. (Like Crysis etc), but as a game Developer... Well that's a different story.

Apparently there is a knew Killer Instinct game in the works, I hope that turns out decently.

I am still waiting for true NFL and NHL sequels. I refuse to pay $60 for roster updates for my console.

How about a fixed Battlefield game, something that wont be cheat ladden as the ones out there. I love BF2 but the amount of cheaters has killed it for me.

I still dont understand why they use punkbuster after the poor patching they do.

So basically, I agree anybody but EA. I am

How about Origin? EA bought them and shut it down.

And then they shutdown the new Ultimma online 3D mmorpg that had been in the works that would have probably done as well or better than WOW. Oh boy what a decision that was.

And Westwood, C&C, what a fiasco.

sigh

Er Bioshock is pretty much System Shock 3. Granted it's not exactly the same as getting an actual SS3, but it's a pretty damn good game nonetheless.

EA turned Maxis into a Sim-expansion machine. Still waiting for a true successor to SimCity 4.

I guess no one caught the sarcasm. I abhore the thought of EA doing just that as well as anyone. Ah well, sometime you get modded down, sometimes you get modded up.

Na man, the intelligent ones among us understood that you were indeed, being sarcastic (hmm, imagine sarcasm existing on Dailytech). It was just the other nerdlings that took offense to it and actually thought you were serious who rated you down.

Don't worry, I'm tracking with you though...

Next time, speak their nerdy language and use something to the effect of, *sigh*, :-/ or *^!(cough, cough)!^* and maybe they'll catch on.

Midway was an extremely successful developer back in the '90s. Unfortunately, they were stuck in the '90s and have struggled to push out titles that appeal to a modern audience.

Regarding EA:
It makes no sense for EA buy Midway. The studio is on its way to shutting down on its own accord and Midway doesn't have any strong franchises that would make a buy out worthwhile.

Get with the program, since people hate bailouts, we've renamed it the "stimulus bill".

Get with the program, since Democrats are backing it this time, the press has called it the "stimulus bill".

Fixed ;)

it's legit. the discounted sale was in exchange for absorbing 70M in debt that Sumner Redstone's company has.

This turn of events gives me mixed feelings. What would bother me, is if Epic can't move on from here. Unreal3 engine was great in GOW2, MK vs DC, and of course Unreal 3.

i'm also unsure of how this will effect pinball--since williams hasn't been making them for almost a decade now.

even with all the paranoia about companies going downhill...i don't see midway going the same route that acclaim went.

I blame Batman...

Everything was good and fine until you brought Batman into the scene. This guy did nothing but complain until finally berating his fellow characters with an 8 minute outburst of hatred and rage.

Apparently one of the ninjas was moving around him as he was trying to focus on killing Kitana.
