Vista's "Flip 3D" Feature
Vista build 5308 is now available to testers

Microsoft has released the Enterprise CTP for Windows Vista (previously referred to as the Februrary CTP). Vista is now feature complete and every feature that you see in builds from now on will be included in the shipping version of the operating system (and vice versa). Microsoft is taking dead aim at businesses with Vista and is tailoring the OS to provide its customers with sufficient reasons to upgrade from Windows 2000/XP.

The Enterprise CTP also includes the new Mobility Center, Goldberg said. From there, users can modify all settings on their mobile PC depending on the environment. For example, when giving a presentation an enterprise user can quickly change the desktop background, switch power settings and disable instant messaging.

Mobile Windows Vista users will additionally be able to access terminal server based applications without a VPN, and seamlessly move across networks from a mobile environment to a connected one. Microsoft wants to see businesses begin putting Vista on new laptops when the OS launches later this year.

Tester now have the following available to them with this latest release:

  • Windows Vista (x86 and x64)

  • Windows Platform SDK

  • Windows Driver Development Kit

  • Windows Automated Installation Kit

Looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to this new OS. I think its just the beggining but its about time that information took a three dimensional form. Volumeric information. I started with win 3.1 so I missed the whole coding experience, so as a user I rely on GUI.

what exactly will be better about having windows in 3d? i don't quite understand how that will affect anything. personally, i HATE apple's implementation.. the dock is one of the most annoying toolbars i have EVER used

I am not saying that this is brillient and amazing but I am saying that it is a beggining. The quantification and presentation of information. The reality of multitasking is here for most of us, I run mutiple apps, can open many webpages at once, email, chat blah blah.

Anyway my point is, is that there are infinite possibilities for innovative ways to display information. Maybe this is not the best but there will be better ones.

To each their own, personally I'm a fan of 3D in the OS. Makes for a much nicer experience.

I wish

I sure wish that I was a tester so I could see this in action.... from the screen shots I've seen across the net in the last year or so I just don't understand how Microsoft can justify the hardware requirements for this OS.... Ohhhh! 4 windows in 3D!!!! (So you can texture and light 4 whole polygons w00t! Go MS!)

On another note, will this OS be able to run 32 bit apps natively? Using a technology such as Apple's Rosetta perhaps?

You should do a little research before posting crap like this. Vista renders the window borders, shadows, and blurs the background behind them.

Both 32 and 64 bit flavors of Vista run 32 bit apps just like Xp so I have no idea what you're getting at here.

Microsoft uses WOW64 (since ~ 2001) for 32 bit software on 64 bit systems (switch to legacy mode for AMD64, emulation for Itanium). The original WOW (Windows On Windows), introduced during the transition from 16 bit to 32 bit with Windows NT 3.1 in July 1993.

Rosetta was officially available this year.

Why would microsoft use something like Rosetta? They don't need to emmulate anything. AMD64 architecture is just another extension to x86. What they do have, however, is a system called WoW which will ensure that 32bit apps will execute using 32bit versions of libraries rather than 64bit versions (thus ensuring 32bit apps work correctly).

Isn't Aero supposed to speed up display??
By mircea on 2/23/2006 11:02:25 AM , Rating: 2
I have a question! Since Aero makes the Vista display fully 3D isn't it than hardware accelerated? Doesn't that mean that the CPU is free of the GUI and able to take on other tasks? I'm just wondering, cuz too many people complain on things that might not only bring better looks but actual performance.

Not that it matters that much anymore since almost every new computer will be dual-core so we will actually have problem making our computers work enough rather than the opposite.... especially when the gpu will do much of the gui rendering ;)

Looks like a gimmick to me. Why would anyone need a pseudo-3D workspace shown on a 2D display? I personally don't like all this bloat being added to an OS. Win XP works just fine for me.

Anyone remember when Win XP first came out? The XP GUI theme severely slowed down a lot of computers. Most people turned that crap off, to make it look just like W2K. CPU's are now fast enough to use the XP themes, but it is still bloated crap. W2K classic desktop works just fine.

Also they need to release DirectX10 on WinXP . I'm not going to be forced to a new OS because games will only work on Vista. There is nothing wrong with WinXP. If they wanted to, they could easily make DX10 work on XP. It's just marketing pushing people to needlessly upgrade their OS.

The hardware requirements are NOT that high

OMgoodness... I think I had to spend about 5min trying to figure out what you are saying...
but yeah, I too am looking forward to Vista, and am theoretically very well prepped for its requirements. The new Office (2007 I think they settled on) also looks really neat. Should be a good year for Microsoft

Requirements may not be that high, but it is still unneccessary bloat. W2K classic desktop is just fine. Read my other comment below.
