Microsoft's White Zune hit a low of $149 in late August
Microsoft cuts $50 from the Zune's MSRP

Everyone is waiting anxiously to hear what Apple has in store for consumers tomorrow. Most expect a completely revamped line of iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod players. Rumors range from widescreen video playback for the Nano to WiFi and a 3.5" multi-touch screen for the regular iPod.

Microsoft is looking to make some waves of its own tomorrow with the announcement of a price drop for its also-ran Zune music player. The price of the Zune will drop from $249 to $199.

The player, which was introduced in November, features a 30GB HDD, 3" display, limited WiFi connectivity and an FM tuner. The Zune was originally launched in White, Brown and Black, but eventually expanded to include Baby Pink and Watermelon Red. Microsoft also released two special edition Zunes based on the Halo franchise – and we can’t forget the 100 Pink Zunes that Microsoft unleashed during the initial roll-out of the Zune.

It's still anyone's guess whether the lower price tag will help to spur Zune sales. Many retailers have advertised Zunes at or around the $199 price tag for months. Woot.com recently had the White Zune on sale for $149 and it took nine hours for the Internet Ferengi to purchase 6,300 units.

I like. Now if they just make their accessories for 360 cheaper...

Amazon had the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for $27 shipped a few days ago.

I was thinking more along the lines of wireless adapter, their HDDs, cables, memory units and rechargable battery with cable. 27 bucks for a wireless controller isn't bad (checks amazon) 31 new, 20 used, not bad.

can you think of any consumer electronics company that low MSRP for accessories? The company all have told us before, they barely get buy with selling the main device. they make it up in warranty (for retail stores) and accessories (check out the price for an apple mouse and keyboard or even an arm strap for a creative muvo)

So, it is already on the way to my house? Wow! I didn't know Amazon was that good!

I thought it was already this price

I swear many online stores were already selling the Zune for $199. I know they were mostly likely ordering them at a "discount" from MS themseleves. Not a bad price IMO, fun player, but it still seems lacking. Maybe I'm just cheap.

Yeah... I bought my Zune back when they first came out, and I think I only paid ~215 or so, from Best Buy. They've been on sale since they've been on sale!

Refurb Zunes with a part # starting with 4MO have been selling under 200 for quite some time. MS also offers a reduced price academic model and their standard model. As of Today, prices on the more expensive standard models have now been reduced to the 199.00 retail level. FWIW...

My only gripe with the damn thing is it still doesn't play nice with windows MCE...

Wow. That Capital M in Microsoft is Marketing. They're going to overwhelm Apple's cool new gadgets with sheer value and volume. Possibly the most anticipated iPod release to date has been hit with the margin bat. Age and wisdom always wins against youth and vigor....?

Naw.

I hate to break it to you, but if Apple releases a touch screen iPod with their upcoming press conference, there isn't going to be much press on this Zune price cut.

I really like the Zune and Microsoft's products alot, but in the marketing battle, Apple always manages to win with the Apple fanboi bloggers in the Steve Job circle-jerk.

Hmmmm, the same can't be said for their computer lineup now can it? :)

Give it time, once the hype for iPod goes down its position will gradually shrink with all the other competitors taking a chunk out of it.

IF the IPod hype goes down. They've been out for 6 years, and no one else is making a dent in the market. Face it, they have it locked in. Hardly anyone is interested in the Zune at the 249 pricepoint, which is the same as the IPod 30 gb, so why would they be interested at 50 bucks less? "Hell, everyone I know has an IPod, I like Itunes better than media player, so why not go with that?". IPod hype isn't going away (at least, not anytime soon) because it's too ingrained in peoples minds.

Clearing out inventory?

Hmm... a Zune price cut and the holidays are just a couple of months away. Does anyone else think Microsoft is trying to clear out inventory of the old Zunes in preparation for launching new Zune models for the holidays?

I certainly care. I much prefer my Zune over the iPod Nano and Creative Vision M that I owned before it. The one thing that I like above everything is the lack of any kind of "touch" interface. I like for my buttons to have a tactile feel when I hit them, especially since I use my player in my car almost exclusively.
