Microsoft says Xbox 360 outsold PS3 3 to 1

The console wars are still raging even though all three of the top-tier consoles are getting older now. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are battling for the gamers dollars and Microsoft has claimed a victory over Sony for the all-important Black Friday shopping dollars.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 had record-breaking sales over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend. Microsoft giddily notes that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by a margin of 3 to 1 and turned in a 25% increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales in 2007.

Microsoft says that it also saw record-breaking sales for its software with Xbox games like Gears of War 2, Fable II, and Lips turning in the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

Microsoft Senior VP of Interactive Business Don Mattrick said in a statement, "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market. Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."

Microsoft claims that the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 week over week across Europe since the September price drop bringing the basic Xbox 360 system to $199.99 worldwide. The Jasper revision of the Xbox 360 was recently launched with revisions to make the console cooler among other things.

Maybe because its lineup is 199/299/399 instead of 399/499?

Oh and lets get this out of the way:
1) PS3 sucks, Xbox rules
2) Xbox sucks, PS3 rules
3) PS3 and Xbox sucks, Wii rules
4) Wii sucks
5) PC is better than everything

Honestly I think this post is all the discussion this article needs.

Agreed.

Tough economic times plus cheapest current gen system = highest sales.

The difference of $200 is enough to buy an extra controller and at least a couple of games.

Yeah but only idiots or old people buy one without the hard drive. Especially with the install to hard drive option now.

You can pick up a $20 20GB on XBox.com for people with reg'ed Arcade or Core systems, so for most people this is a non issue. I ordered on Friday AM and already got my HD today...free shipping too and they threw in a three month Live Gold card too.

Cant beat that deal with a stick.

It's also cheaper buying the Arcade then buying the 120gb HDD addon, works out cheaper than the Xbox 360 Elite. - here in Australia the Arcade is priced at $298 The 120gb HDD is priced at $199 which equates to $497 The Elite alone costs $524. - Sure you miss out on the cool Black Finish with the Chrome DVD Bezel, The Wired Headset and HDMI cable - but I prefer the Wireless Headset, and you can pick-up HDMI cables for $5 anyway. - Plus I gained a 256mb memory card which is handy to take my Save Games around to my mates place, and the "Arcade" games I actually enjoyed. - So I saved $27 which in the end is better in my pocket then someone elses. - Sometimes if the Arcade is on special which happens rather often down at Kmart it really does add more value.

On another Note, isn't an attachment rate of 8.1 games rather high? I own 27 games for the Xbox 360, but my neighbors don't even have anywhere near that much, and the games they do have are new releases anyway.

I also got the free 20gb HDD Addon from the Microsoft Upgrade website for only $20 with 3 Months of Xbox Live! - I ended up giving it to my Neighbors as an Early Christmas present.

Perhaps if you weren't a rude hypocrite then people wouldn't have rated you down...

In other words: YOU need to go back to English 101 first.

I dunno... you can find a lot of 20GB HDDs on Craigslist for downright cheap. $200 may be a bit pricey for a media extender, but each TV in my house now has a 360 attached and I can bring my Live account to each one on my memory card if I want to stream Netflix to any one of them...

It would be best if they would just dump the arcade though...

Well the Jasper revision of the 360 does allow the NXE to be installed without the harddrive, at least. In fact I think the newest machines come with it already.

Only idiots, old people or people that have never had a RROD Xbox 360 buy something OTHER than the arcade. Buy a 120gb Western Digital drive and install the Xbox OS for a cheap Elite.

There's absolutely no reason to own the harddrive unless you not only game online, but also download large content online.

Which is only the very, very hardcore, really.

Look at Wii sales, the highest among the consoles and it has no HDD.

In fact, the console with a standard HDD is proven to always lose (PS2 beat Xbox, Wii beat 360 and PS3, 360 (optional HDD) beat PS3 (standard HDD)).

It's easy to forget here on Andandtech that most people aren't like us, and most people do not download content on their console. The HDD is useless to most people.

Well, that and some reference to how the Xbox did against the Wii. If you are going to write an article about how well one did over the weekend, at least put it in context against *all* its competitors. Or are they not selling the Wii anymore?
