Microsoft says Xbox 360 outsold PS3 3 to 1

The console wars are still raging even though all three of the top-tier consoles are getting older now. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are battling for the gamers dollars and Microsoft has claimed a victory over Sony for the all-important Black Friday shopping dollars.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 had record-breaking sales over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend. Microsoft giddily notes that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by a margin of 3 to 1 and turned in a 25% increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales in 2007.

Microsoft says that it also saw record-breaking sales for its software with Xbox games like Gears of War 2, Fable II, and Lips turning in the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

Microsoft Senior VP of Interactive Business Don Mattrick said in a statement, "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market. Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."

Microsoft claims that the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 week over week across Europe since the September price drop bringing the basic Xbox 360 system to $199.99 worldwide. The Jasper revision of the Xbox 360 was recently launched with revisions to make the console cooler among other things.

Maybe because its lineup is 199/299/399 instead of 399/499?

Oh and lets get this out of the way:
1) PS3 sucks, Xbox rules
2) Xbox sucks, PS3 rules
3) PS3 and Xbox sucks, Wii rules
4) Wii sucks
5) PC is better than everything

Tough economic times plus cheapest current gen system = highest sales.

The difference of $200 is enough to buy an extra controller and at least a couple of games.

Yeah but only idiots or old people buy one without the hard drive. Especially with the install to hard drive option now.

You can pick up a $20 20GB on for people with reg'ed Arcade or Core systems, so for most people this is a non issue. I ordered on Friday AM and already got my HD shipping too and they threw in a three month Live Gold card too.

Cant beat that deal with a stick.

It's also cheaper buying the Arcade then buying the 120gb HDD addon, works out cheaper than the Xbox 360 Elite. - here in Australia the Arcade is priced at $298 The 120gb HDD is priced at $199 which equates to $497 The Elite alone costs $524. - Sure you miss out on the cool Black Finish with the Chrome DVD Bezel, The Wired Headset and HDMI cable - but I prefer the Wireless Headset, and you can pick-up HDMI cables for $5 anyway. - Plus I gained a 256mb memory card which is handy to take my Save Games around to my mates place, and the "Arcade" games I actually enjoyed. - So I saved $27 which in the end is better in my pocket then someone elses. - Sometimes if the Arcade is on special which happens rather often down at Kmart it really does add more value.

On another Note, isn't an attachment rate of 8.1 games rather high? I own 27 games for the Xbox 360, but my neighbors don't even have anywhere near that much, and the games they do have are new releases anyway.

I also got the free 20gb HDD Addon from the Microsoft Upgrade website for only $20 with 3 Months of Xbox Live! - I ended up giving it to my Neighbors as an Early Christmas present.

I dunno... you can find a lot of 20GB HDDs on Craigslist for downright cheap. $200 may be a bit pricey for a media extender, but each TV in my house now has a 360 attached and I can bring my Live account to each one on my memory card if I want to stream Netflix to any one of them...

It would be best if they would just dump the arcade though...

There's absolutely no reason to own the harddrive unless you not only game online, but also download large content online.

Which is only the very, very hardcore, really.

Look at Wii sales, the highest among the consoles and it has no HDD.

In fact, the console with a standard HDD is proven to always lose (PS2 beat Xbox, Wii beat 360 and PS3, 360 (optional HDD) beat PS3 (standard HDD)).

It's easy to forget here on Andandtech that most people aren't like us, and most people do not download content on their console. The HDD is useless to most people.

The most current sales chart I could find (march, there must be something newer..):

1. Wii Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2.7 million
2. 360 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - 752,300
3. 360 Army of Two - 606,100
4. Wii Play - 409,800
5. PSP God of War: Chains of Olympus - 340,500
6. PSP Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - 301,600
7. Wii Guitar Hero III - 264,100
8. 360 MLB 2K8 - 237,100
9. 360 Call of Duty 4 - 237,000
10. PS3 Army of Two - 224,900

Totals, top 10:
Wii: 3,373,900 (3 games)
360: 1,832,500 (4 games)
PSP: 642,100 (2 games)
PS3: 224,900 (1 game)

Wii rulez :)
PS2 is not even in there, but I think it'll take some years for even the Wii to reach total PS2 sales. But then again the PS2 is/was a nice machine at the right price, just like the Wii is.

If Sony could (actually they need to!) cut their price on the PS3 further and soon(!) (christmas?), they might have a chance to catch up with the 360 in total world sales. At which the PS3 lacks bigtime at the moment:®1...

My turn: September 2007 sales

1. Halo 3 (Xbox 360) — 3.3 million
2. Wii Play with remote (Wii) — 282,000
3. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS) — 224,000
4. Madden NFL 08 (PlayStation 2) — 205,000
5. Skate (Xbox 360) — 175,000
6. Madden NFL 08 (Xbox 360) — 173,000
7. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) — 167,000
8. BioShock (Xbox 360) — 150,000
9. Brain Age 2 (Nintendo DS) — 141,000
10. Heavenly Sword (PlayStation 3) — 139,000

That month was such a tight race, the suspense would be too much to bother totaling the sales up.

Of course, picking the month when one of a console's top selling games came out will skew the stats a bit.

How many Wii games do you see in the top 10 (or top 20, for that matter) that aren't made by Nintendo? Third party support for the Wii is weak. Software sales for the Wii spike whenever Nintendo releases a game, but remain in a lull the rest of the time. Whereas the 360 and PS3 both have a fair compliment of games regularly coming out and selling well, for the Wii it's mostly just Nintendo releases.

RE: Gee I wonder why...
By Clauzii on 12/2/2008 4:51:08 PM , Rating: 2
Wouldnt it be safe to say that everytime a Wii gets sold, some games will get out the door too? Since the Wii is currently selling well, how can gamesales go into a lull??

RE: Gee I wonder why...
By VaultDweller on 12/2/2008 5:12:48 PM , Rating: 3
That's not quite a safe assumption. A large part of the Wii's success comes from its appeal to 'non-gamer' demographics, and often the people in these demographics never buy a single game - they just play Wii Sports, or possibly Wii Play that comes with the remote.

That said, yes, games are getting sold for the Wii at a steady pace. A 'lull' does not mean sales stop, but the Wii's attach rate is lower than other consoles.

I'm not going to continue this debate, since there's no subjective points to debate, just a bunch of NPD figures to throw around. I don't really want to remain in a pissing contest between consoles that I don't own, and never will.

So it beats the PS3 in that as well?

Anyways, third party has always been bad for Nintendo, at least since SNES. Nintendo can't really do much about the third party stuff since they don't make it. They just allow the developers to produce stuff for the Wii. It's been said that the lack of good third party games is because the developers haven't been putting there A rated games on the Wii but instead have been putting their crappier games on it. I would agree with that statement. Course, I guess it's just another reason to look at the other two consoles.... but with the sales figures of the Wii it's getting harder to understand why the third party developers are still putting their garbage on the Wii, not that it's all garbage mind you. It would seem obvious that if they produced their A rated games on the Wii that they would see far more profit. Of course that does depend on the game sense the demographics aren't the exact same. I don't think a GTA game would ever sell well on an Nintendo console for a variety of reasons.... but Fable 2 seems right up Nintendo's alley.

Yes, we are, and it's almost 2009. I am well aware of the current date.

I wasn't quoting figures to show the 360 sells more games. I don't care about these console wars - I haven't owned a console since my N64. I was quoting a figure to show that you can pick a month that will favor any console of your choice. The poster above me used the month that Super Smash Bros was released; I picked the month that Halo 3 was released. A PS3 fanboy could probably pick the month that MGS4 was released for similar results.

Basing an analysis on such a short period of time is not useful, whether it's this month or a year ago.

News is never about the winner, but the want-a-be. It is especially good when you have two want-a-bes that are bashing each other in the process.

Your argument is irrelevent to the vast majority of people buying and playing games today as evidenced by the sales graphs for the Wii and the fact that its still difficult to find in the shops.

Whilst the graphics on the Wii aren't cutting edge by anyone's definition of the phrase, actually neither are the 360 or the PS3 anymore (How cutting edge can a 3 year old 7800GTX-derivative be these days?) and in 5 years the graphics on all 3 will look positively stone age, so its not really a big deal. Now Nintendo has made a precedent of succes with less than cutting edge hardware and a bag full of innovation, don't expect the subsequent console wars to be as predictable as they were previously in terms of improved graphics chips and more parallel processing. For one thing only Microsoft and Nintendo could technically afford to keep chasing that dream and with the problems caused by the RROD which have massively hit MS's bottom line, coupled with the time to market and profit margins of games for highly advanced consoles with specific coding requirements (i.e. Cell) means that if those options are not leading the market in terms of sales then your dedication might not be appreciated or ultimately rewarded. I therefore think you will see longer hardware cycles from everyone and developers keeping their eyes firmly on sales figures with less blue-sky thinking.

I would say that the Wii is a far more social console looking at the way its marketed in a far more conventionally sociable way (i.e. the people are in the same room and they aren't blowing each other's virtual brains out, not that I'm judging) unlike the 360 where everyone is sitting in their own bedroom playing against people on the other side of the country.

Gamers would tend to judge the consoles by the games and there, its down to personal taste. I own all three and a powerful gaming PC and have no particular favorites, although I am still playing Super Mario Galaxy and occassionally GOW2 and LBP.

It will definitely look poor in 5 years because it already looks poor now.

Turn any of the consoles up to a 1080p TV or even (depending on the game) a 720p TV and watch the framerate plummet.

An 8800 GT for less than $100 absolutely obliterates the 7800 GTX (which the RSX GPU is very similar to), and the Xbox360 GPU is basically a low shader count 2000 series GPU with eDRAM. As we know the 2000 series was ATi's great mess up they only just fixed with the 4000 series.

I care about the games not the consoles, I'm hardly going to trade-up all my FPS games that I enjoy just for a PS3, I enjoy my gaming life at the moment.

If the PS3 had the games -I- wanted and -I- Enjoyed, you bet I would buy one, but they don't.

However RROD is a set-back, a minor issue, it wont kill you to go without a console for a few weeks, Heck that's usually the time I manage to get my housework in order. ;)

I think the 360 is a fantastic console, RROD aside, & price is the main reason for that margin on Black friday. Sony better find a way to get the PS3's price down cause with the economy going the way it is, it's all about price for many, & that's it.

It was even better than that for Microsoft this Black Friday. Deals on the 360 were UBER, with free games, hard drives, controllers, and more.

The only deal on the PS3: Get an [evil] credit card for which the people who need the discount most will not qualify, but that's Sony - after they also took out PS2 compatibility.

The $199 Xbox (Arcade) doesn't have BC either.

But for a small amount, you can add it. (20 GB HDDs are cheap through MS, also a lot of places are selling them cheap too)

RE: Gee I wonder why...

That is because even the PS3 doesn't do a full software emulation but still requires some of the PS2 components. So maintaining BC with PS2 software was still an added cost.

And lets not forget that the lower price netted alot of extras. All the XBox systems had pack in games, Wal Mart included Guitar Hero 3 in the price, Target gave a $60 gift card (perfect for a new game or two greatest hits), etc...

I picked up a 360 and am very happy. The inclusion of the games/extras made it an even better deal and the NXE was the icing on the cake with Netflix. The value of XBox crushed the promise of PS3 on Friday for my family.

I am going to look around this Xmas, if no luck, i will wait. Sending back for repair is just too much hassle for me.

I had SO many problems getting the repair set up - and it's STILL not done. You can argue the merits of one console vs. the other all day, but hey, people will pick the cheapest option most of the time when the two options are near parity.

Wii is a whole different thing, not because of inferior graphics or weaker processor (both true) but because the whole style of play is different. Waving the wiimote and nunchuk is radically different than X, X, Y, B, right-trigger, left-thumbstick up play.

yep, it's really annoying.

Am I the only person that played Zelda and just wished that there was a button to press for attacks rather than waving the nun-chick or wii-mote about, hoping that it works this time?

Most of the time the wii mote interaction seems to be just crowbarred into games, adding nothing to the game play but annoyance.

I am willing to accept that I am something of a curmudgeonly-stuck-in-the-mug type however, a lot of people seem to love the wii-mote but for me it is a little too crude, inaccurate and unresponsive.

Perhaps wii-mote2 will be better but by the Sony and MS will have their own versions too, that will be just as good, probably.

As for dumping non-Jasper inventroy.

I hope it's all gone by next year and when the recession really kicks in on the high street. Then I'll be in for my second xBox, now that most of the problems have been ironed out or work-arounds like hard drive installs introduced.

If only the damn thing wasn't so ugly, it'll have to go behind the TV I think =D

Yea, it's called the A button, and it worked very well in Zelda. I agree that many of the Wii-mote actions feel tacked on... but in almost every single game it's because IT WAS TACKED on. Twilight Princess was originally designed to come out on the Gamecube long before the Wii was set to come out, but it got pushed back for some reason. I'm not sure about you, but I personally like the Wii mote a lot better for FPS games. That's really the only thing I ever thought it would be very useful for, and it has been in my experience.

It seems to me that a LOT of people complain about the Wii mote and how inaccurate it is. I can't figure out why this is though. My set-up works flawlessly unless I'm either sitting at like a 60 degree angle to the TV, in which case I can barely see anything anyways, or if the sensor bar is being obstructed. If neither of those conditions occur, and they almost never do, then it works just fine. I'm guessing that these people have problems just can't set it up right. I guess I can't blame them since the Wii is supposed to be the non-gamers machine. As such they are more likely to be less technically skilled than those on the 360 or PS3 and can't set it up properly. That's my theory anyways.

I think all 3 machines have their strong points, only in their games though. Each machine has some games that I'd love to play, but I don't because I can't afford all of them. I pick 1 console which I know will have games that I'll love, and that has ended up being Nintendo since forever. I don't like the 1st party games on the 360 or PS3. That's not a problem once good 3rd party games have come out, but when they haven't and I'm just going off of what may come out..... then 3rd party games area big guessing game on how good they'll be. Since Nintendo has amazing 1st party games Nintendo has been the safe bet in every generation. That's my logic anyways. I'm sure it applies to no one else. Course, the RRoD has turned me away from the xBox forever. I also don't like the idea of paying to play multiplayer, xBox Live. I'm not saying that the Wii or PS3 are better in that respect.... but I'm never going to pay for xBox Live or an xBox Live like service.

Sadly, not everything can be done with the A button in Z-TP.

I must admit, I have not used the wii-mote for and FPS games and I can see that (in theory) it should be a good device for this. However, having seen the lag in the motion of pointers when (not all that quick) movements are made in many screens where the pointer is used, I am not filled with confidence.

The accuracy of the pointer is pretty good though, it's just a shame that it is a little slow.

The other motion sensing devices are not as accurate however, especially after heavy use. My nun-chuck makes an alarming rattling noise these days, which it never used to too.

The concept of the wii-mote is brilliant and Nintendo have found a great idea after going through a few pups.

It can be done a lot better tho, and by then Sony and MS will be on their case.

I had an xBox and sold it off pretty quick before the RROD was an issue but I liked it a lot and still enjoy playing on my friend's machines.

I've stuck with the PS3 and wii.

The PS3 for media and some games, the wii to keep the girlfriend happy and quick and fast general fun.

MS have won the on-line and sales battle tho (in the premium next gen market, tween MS and Sony) and Sony have had their hands tied by one of it's strengths, the BD player, which is stopping them from reducing prices and under cutting their Blue-Ray Disk layer allies.

I am still waiting for Jasper Elite to come out first before I buy the new one.

They're out now, mostly in Arcade360s. Look for one that has 12.1 amps listed on the s/n tag. It will probably be lot 842 or greater, probably the first week of November or later. The power supply will be a 150w unit.

MS has refurbed 20GB HDs for $30 you can throw in or just buy a 60GB or 120GB at the regular prices.

It's still noisier than the PS3.

"dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console"

So their social entertainment isn't the best in absolute terms, only when you factor in price? From what I've read, I thought the Xbox had the best network service. Or is that not the major contributor to "social entertainment value?"

Yah I also laughed when I read that. Divide by 0 error! How can you say "dollar for dollar" when the PS3 online is free???

I have both systems, and while Live has better "social" features (easily invite friends to games or chats) I gave it up to the free PS3 online because the features are similar enough that I can't be swayed to spend $50 a year to go online and play. Not only that, but I like looking at my home screen without being barraged with ads like on Live. I also can download tons of themes for free just by using a 3rd party website on the web browser, while 95% of the 360 themes cost money, or "points" which cost money.

I save my 30 day free gold cards for when I get exclusives like GoW2, so I can go play it for 30 days online and then move on to something else. Cross platform games will always be PS3 for me.

complain all you want about 10 cents per day ($38 for 13 month card on amazon) = approximately 38 / 380.

I'll take the 20+ million xbox live users, universal friends list, cross game parties, much better organized content, and universal achievements / game comparison. Sorry, but sony is years behind, only valid competition is Valve's Steam.

The PS3 can do it for free so it wins.
Since when does free constitute as better? Its an added bonus sure, but everytime I play online with the ps3 it takes twice maybe three times as long to find a player. And with shooter games it takes even longer, I have had to wait 5-10 minutes on a constant basis for enough players to play C0D.

Really the two don't compare in terms of gameplay, the 360 is leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3 and the amount of Xbox live users show this.

I have both consoles and have compared the same games online, I have always found Xbox live to be a better experience, and it is worth the money for sure.

I find it funny you are even commenting at all as you have neither console, and calling someone a 'stat whore' makes you sound foolish, he gives you numbers showing how cheap live is, and you fire back with baseless comments pretending you know what you are talking about when you own neither console.

I'm calling your bluff, simply because I play CoD on PS3 on a daily basis and it rarely takes more than 6 seconds to find a full 12 player TDM match. If it takes you longer then it's not the system... maybe you use wireless ethernet on the PS3 and get poor reception where the PS3 is in relation to the router. And OMG, have you ever tried gears of war 2?? It actually does take 3 mins for the system to match players; but thats not the 360's fault, it's the crappy matching algorithm.

Like I said, I prefer the Live system for it's ease of use and organization, and I also like the mic jack built into the controller, but regardless of how "cheap" I am, the difference is not worth the $50 or even $38 out of pocket expense in my opinion... but opinions are like buttholes: everyone has them and they all stink.

You own neither, and yet you know which one is better. Wow, total ignorance. I have used both Live and PSN. One thing I have noticed playing Resistance 2 and Call of Duty: World at War is that very few people use microphones on the PS3. Teammates who won't communicate are nearly worthless. I found a couple people on COD:W@W who DID use microphones, and it was crap. The sound quality was so poor that neither my brother or I could understand anything they said. On everygame I've played on XBOX live, the voice chat at least worked well enough to be useable. Not amazing hi-fi sound, but functional at least.

Crapbox? Oldtech?

In this "Digital" day and age, Blue-ray could be classed as "Old-Tech" everything is moving to an online streaming medium, a-la Netflix.

Plus the "GPU" inherited within the PS3 could be also classed as "Older and Inferior" to the Xbox 360's GPU in many ways, despite the PS3's CPU being much more powerful. - But then again you wouldn't pair a PC up with a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz with a Geforce 7900 would you?

I have a 42" Bravia LCD which is 1080P paired with an Xbox 360 Arcade with an additional 120gb HDD Addon, My friends kids love to come around and play Viva Pinata, or when my mates come around, jump online and play Halo 3 or CoD4/5.

So, are you really that vain that you are worried what people might say about you buying an Xbox 360? - Back when the race was Basically the Xbox vs PS2 - I wanted to be different and bought a gamecube, There was a TON of cross-platform games available on the system plus first-rate games and I had fun, that is what "Entertainment Systems" are supposed to provide, and that is "Entertainment and fun". - I guess you missed that point.

It really is no surprise. My family and I have been sitting on the PS3 fence for several months now, but I refuse to purchase until Sony shakes off their undeserved arrogance.

If North Americans had the LBP bundle that Europe/AU/Asia got, with the game and an extra controller for the same $399 price point, I probably would have bitten. But as of right now, I am sticking to the Wii we currently own for the family, and the PC for my gaming needs. Sony's loss.

Granted I agree, they really need to drop the price or sell that LBP bundle here, I don't think it is arrogance as much as trying not to go under selling for a loss. But hell, I have had mine since launch, I figure I got my $600 worth so far.

I bought my 60GB PS3 a year and a half ago right after the price “drop” of $100 ($600 to $500). What pushed me on that sale moreso was 5 free Blu-Ray movies from Sony and a free Sony BD remote (total value at the time $125) purchasing the console through Amazon.

Truth be told, I’d like to have all three consoles. But similar to you, I also have a PC for gaming and can only afford one console. I cannot play shooters on the console with a stupid controller – nothing beats the keyboard and mouse for that (PS3 racing I can manage). However, during Thanksgiving I took the PS3 down and showed it off on my sister’s new 1080p XBR6.

They were blown away at the home movies, pictures, downloaded game trailers, BD movies, internet surfing capability, and of course the games themselves that this thing can manage. The PS3 is much more than a gaming box. I do not regret my purchase one bit – especially after upgrading to a Western Digital Scorpio 320GB 7200RPM hard drive.

All in all I've got about $1,000 invested in the PS3 in that year and a half and it has been places and been shared with a lot of people. In one week I spent $1,500 building a new PC gaming rig that I couldn't share with anyone but myself.

Don't know what you mean by bundle/price but there are several bundles, like the Metal Gear pack and the 160GB Uncharted pack. Some retailers are also offering other bundles like Amazon, if you buy PS3 and BD remote ($25) you get 1 free game and 1 free Blu-ray movie.

Sony is offering $150 off a PS3 if you sign up for their credit card. $250 for a Blu-ray player, hell that's pretty damn right there, plus you get the game console thrown in for free...

Lol, why so many people hating on the ps3? for a website geared towards people interested in technology, there seems to be a disproportionately large amount of xbox fanboys putting down the only game system to even attempt to be more technologically advanced. Lets face, im not a sony fan, but their console blows the others out of the water. The wii is actually less advanced then last generation's consoles. Its graphics are worse then the ps2's. the 360 has a myriad of problems, it red rings, it scratches disks like no tomorrow and it over heats, not to mention the annoying excessive amounts of heat and noise it generates. It can not play hd content, unless and until the content is downloaded because, im sorry to rain on your parade, but DVDs are sd, not hd, the hdmi output only puts out upscaled video. sure the ps3 is hundred bucks more but, your getting your monies worth:
1) can run Linux
2) Blu ray
4) replaceable, and upgradeable hard drive
5) online is free and has most of the same features that LIVE does
6) games are not limited to a double layer dvd
7) you wont be praying for it to red ring before its warranty is up
8) ps3 exclusives, like Littlebigplanet, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank, all Square enix games after 13 and Star Ocean 4 (gears is equivalent to resistance, except it has more blood and swearing)
9) is MUCH more powerful then 360 or wii
10) Sony is banking on it being a long term console that will not be obsolete in less then 4 years.

Hate to sound like the fanboy i am not, but it had to be said...

By Headfoot on 12/5/2008 8:57:46 PM , Rating: 2
10) That's a bad point because it's already very, very obsolete if we are talking from a "hardware" perspective. If we are talking from a "has fun games" perspective, then the PS2 is still running strong.

1. Means nothing to the majority... seriously, how many people are going to buy a PS3 because they can install an OS on it??? This strikes me as a checkbox feature that won't make them any money. If Sony sells consoles without games and accessories, then they'll be in big trouble.

2. Means nothing to the majority... the HD/BD wars is over, and neither side won.

3. Means nothing to the majority... I've no problem with the HD output of the 360... When I had one I rented a few HD movies and they looked/sounded great on my LCD TV. Very few individuals will even be able to take advantage of this "feature."

4. Means nothing to the majority... I'm assuming you're referring to the ability to take pretty much any sata laptop drive and throw it in... most people will never touch that drive.

5. Can't comment much on this. I never had a problem with the Xbox Live and the minuscule cost was hardly an issue, but I've never used PSN. I do find far more reviews/opinions in favor of the 360, but there may just be more users.

6. Means nothing to the majority... most it will do is affect the lifetime of the console... I don't see many complaints about Halo, Fallout 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect, GTAIV, COD4, Fable 2, etc, just because they're "limited" to a DL-DVD

7. This topic is getting really old and isn't as prevalent anymore... I had 2 360's (first one was a launch system stolen after 3 years, and I sold the second because I just didn't use it enough) and never experienced the RROD. With Jasper, I expect this to become moot.

8. If developers want to limit themselves... then that's their loss. I'm not going to buy a console for one or two games. Hence the reason I never bought a PS3.

9. Developers disagree.. What looks good on paper doesn't always turn out for the better.

10. It doesn't really matter what their banking on. It matters what the profits and losses have to say.

It's all great and good to have fancy technology to parade around, but if Developers can't take advantage of it and most of the people don't care about it I fail to see the point. "Getting your monies' worth" is entirely subjective to the individual needs of a consumer. I "got my monies' worth" out of Xbox Live... but you see it as a waste because someone else offers a similar service for free...

But in the end, the numbers will tell the truth. Provided you can get the real numbers, that is.

The other thing people are wondering...

Granted, I tend to believe Microsoft on this, but still, basing the figures in this news item only on a Microsoft's press release isn't very good, IMO.

I agree, though, Xbox 360 is the least expensive console, and that alone makes it pretty attractive. Couple that with the new user interface, and a good game lineup, and there's a good reason it's selling. It's more tempting than ever to buy (but I'll stick to my Wii for now).

I've been rooting for PS3 over X360 ever since I header about them.
Granted, a big part of the reasons for that are stupid, like the traditional anti-MS attitude many more besides me have around here; it launched later, so it should be better; it has blu-ray; it has ATI; it has Linux; it has Tekken; it has a matching portable that I might want too... I also was very impressed by the wild hype early on like it will run dual 1080p screens, its controllers will use standard bluetooth and connect to comps just as easy, it will have full backwards compatibility, etc... all a bunch of crap that turned out all wrong.

To sum up, I've been a PS3 fanboy for ever... on words.
Yet I just bought a x360 last week.
Damned Sony screwed up the PS3 way bad if they couldn't get even myself to buy into it.
If only they had kept at least some of their promises... mainly backwards compatibility and controller interoperability with PCs... I still would've loved the console despite the other disappointments.

In fact one of the main reasons I went with the xbox is that I can use the controllers with my Games For Windows titles on the PC - I bought one of the controllers with a wireless receiver for that purpose. I wish Sony had that option...

So yes, MS "wins". But let me tell you, they aren't all good either.
The way they bundle their controllers with non-rechargeable batteries, and make them not able to recharge with standard rechargeable AA batteries, instead requiring expensive proprietary rechargeable kits... it is awful. And they don't let you know about it until after you bought the console. That's the dirtiest money-sucking scheme I've seen.
Another terrible move is the way they make so many games unplayable in normal LAN multiplayer and only playable online, requiring the ridiculous subscription for what PC gamers get for free.
Also some trivial things, like they still refuse to acknowledge my country exists in their "select your locale" list, why is that?
Anyway, I hate them.

Pricing was also a factor that led me to the x360 side. In retrospect, the difference isn't all that significant, as once you buy additional controllers, remote, batteries and accessories, a few games, online subscription and so on, both end up similarly expensive. Way more expensive than I anticipated.

I also hate the whole industry for pricing the games for consoles at twice the price they are for a PC, with half the features... what's the logic in that? I guess it's because of the cut the console makers themselves get from the game price...

Greedy bastards... they totally deserve what they'll get once their games are hacked and pirated.

He got rated down because RROD is not the same issue it once was. As with any console there will be exceptions (my PS3 broke within a month for example), but the failure rate of the 360 is not nearly what it used to be. My friend works at purilator Canada(shipping company) where both 360 and PS3 returns go through, and he told me that what used to be 3:1 returns in favor of the 360 is now down to 1:1 and they see far less of either console.

Ever since the 65nm CPU went in, RROD has been less and less of an isssue, now that both the GPU and CPU are 65nm, I think its safe to say that RROD as a defect is a thing of the past. Every electronic will have a failure rate, theres no getting past this..

these are the reasons he is being rated down... As his statements are not only untrue, but have not been for some time.

RROD may not be the issue that it once was, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a big issue. Last Christmas I purchased an Xbox 360 for my youngest son and a PS3 for my oldest son. The PS3 has had absolutely no problems whatsoever. The 360 (and it's a Falcon so according to you the issue I have is pretty much gone . . . thanks for informing me) has been to the shop once and just last night I was on the phone with Microsoft because it needs to go back again. I'm waiting on the email with the shipping tags.

My kids know a few people that have had a 360 go bad, but we don't know of anyone to have a defective PS3.

One area I do give Microsoft credit for is Xbox Live. Online play is better on the 360 than the PS3, but considering I spend $50 a year for my son to play online with the 360 and $0 a year for my son to play online with the PS3 I think the PS3 is the better value, even if online play isn't quite as smooth.

Well just for my two cents, the PS3 exclusive games pretty much always use dedicated servers for their online games as opposed to P2P type crap, which is why their games tend to run smoother online with more people compared to the 360.

Both systems use the client server model, neither employ a P2P gameplay system.

I also find the exact opposite in terms of smoother gameplay. The 360 tends to be much more responsive as the 'netcode' which helps reduce lag between between clients with different latency is coded into any game that makes use of the Live Server Protocol. The PS3 on the other hand is totally up the developer. Games like COD4 I can definitely tell the difference between a player with a low ping and a mid range ping, on Live servers the difference is usually negligible.

I can't tell you how annoying it is to walk around a corner having already been shot in the face because of the lack of proper netcode.

Uh, Live usually uses a half assed P2P/Client is the server model. Examples would be Gears of War, this is why you see complaints of host advantage and why you even have a host in the first place or the fun of 8 person online. Realize that COD4 is not an exclusive, I stated PS3 exclusives run the server model. COD4 does not use dedicated servers to host games, they have a client host.

Warhawk, Resistance 1 and 2 and MGS4 are examples of server based online games. I can't believe not having servers is tolerated, as I couldn't imagine if they tried to pull that crap with Starcraft II or Diablo III or did it with CSS or TF2.

Servers are stupid, it means when the servers die (go offline for lack of interest/financial reasons) you can never play the game online again. Which with the way most PS3 excusives sell means "sooner rather than later".

With peer to peer, no such worries.

PS.. are you sure it was RROD, it sounds more like your HD crashed and died as it was during an update.

Oh and a more recent report seems there down to 16% either way still too high for me to justify purchasing one.

You just made the point to the opposite of your stance...The article is from June of 07 and before any of the hardware updates took effect.

A reduction from 33% to 16% is substantial and as a statistically trained person, you can not tell what the rate is for newer systems vs old. There could be a run out of the older systems failing causing the numbers to fall steadily as they get replaced in the a falling thermometer, you dont instantly go from 80 to 20.

Nice... link to an article that is based on information from Gamestop and Best Buy employees. Not exactly the most reliable sources.

On a side note... I don't own either system and really don't care how often one fails vs. the other. If you are going to try and talk down to a group of people at least have some hard facts other than the opinions of some store employees. I am not saying that the failure rates are or are not that high, but I am saying I would like some hard data.
