IT Microsoft To Support Virtualized Linux

Microsoft has announced that they will support customers that run Linux within Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2

In addition to making "virtualized" Linux support inside MVS 2005, Microsoft has also announced that it has made Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 a free download, previously priced at $99 for up to 4 processors or $199 for an unlimited number of processors. CNET claims:

Microsoft said that it has developed software to simplify the installation of Linux distributions from Red Hat and Novell SuSE to run on Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows. In addition, Microsoft will provide technical support [to] customers running Windows and Linux side by side.

Microsoft has also said that the upcoming server edition of Windows Vista will have virtualization built in to it. Specifically Microsoft said that it is developing hypervisor software, code-named Viridian, to host multiple operating systems on one machine.

The one gripe I've had about WinXP PRO was that it didn't allow multiple logins via Remote Desktop. Now with the free Virtualization software and Linux support, those problems are on they're way out. I guess the only bummer is that it's been so long already!

I responded a bit quickly and wanted to edit, but too late now.

Use licensing, that's what it's there for. Not free, but then it's not VNC either.

Do you mean "buy Windows Server"? Or what kind of licensing are you talking about?

Hmm, never looked before, but I thought you could install terminals services under XP Pro, just took a look and it ain't there. And the two user administrative mode isn't there either, and the free 120 day grace period won't work w/o TS.

So let's just get back to the subject and talk about VT :).

Speaking of VT - the state of affairs here is very far from being cool. Can you run Windows in virtual machine and get full hardware Direct3D acceleration? Nope. Can you run Linux in a virtual machine and get physical access from Linux to your 802.11g adapter? Nope. Both things could really make a breakthrough, like running all sweet Win32 games hosted on a nice OS, or if you can't do this how about running this nice OS inside Windows and let it (not Windows!) control your 802.11g adapter because Windows is unbelievably braindead when it comes to wireless networking. Even more braindead than Mac OS X, this tells something! How about running Linux hostapd inside Windows host OS with VT? Yeah, keep on dreamin'. Sure they make SQL and Exchange and whatnot running on multiple virtual servers multiple virtual CPUs and all that mumbojumbo, but us little home users willing to combine nice features of one cool OS with games of Windows, or something like that? FOR-GET-IT. Intel's VT support may be a little bit closer to this ultimate goal, but there seems to be light years still lying ahead before we'd get there :-(

Just read this and saved myself $200. I currently use the Virtual PC 2004 version to build lab environments of client's IPT/IPCC systems for testing and staging, but wanted to step up to virtualization support.

Guess it was in response to VMWare's free beta
