Last week’s Xbox 360 sales rivaled Wii

The holiday season is the biggest sales time for the videogame industry. Both Sony and Nintendo have reported positive results following the Thanksgiving shopping week.

Sony said that its Black Friday sales this year are up nearly three-fold, though the company declined to provide real numbers. As expected, Wii sales hit a record high for the year, selling 350,000 throughout the week – enough for Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime to find it impossible in locating a console.

The Wii wasn’t the only video game system selling well last week, as Microsoft has announced that it sold 310,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the U.S. for the week of November 18.

While it could be argued that Nintendo may have sold more Wii if there were adequate stocks to meet demand, Microsoft said that its console was also the victim of shortages.

“We turned around and replenished those units,” Xbox 360 product manager Aaron Greenberg said to Next-Gen. “We’re seeing thousands and thousands of top big box retail stores reporting outages depending on SKUs, and some reporting outages of the whole Xbox 360 line.”

The recently re-launched and re-tooled Xbox 360 Core as the Xbox 360 Arcade bundle is also performing better than Microsoft’s expectations, further proving the consumer’s extreme price sensitivity in videogame products. The Xbox 360 Arcade is priced at $279, while the Wii is $249.

“We heard from one of our top retailers that the launch of Arcade was the biggest Xbox 360 sales week since Christmas of last year. It’s performed above what we’ve expected and is a bigger percentage of the mix than what we thought it would be,” said Greenberg. “We knew Halo 3 would be a big hit, but we didn’t know that Arcade, Scene It and Guitar Hero would be things that families would be buying this holiday. Hopefully that trend will continue.”

"Sorry, we're all out of Nintendo Wii hardware. We do have the Xbox 360 Arcade, which is only $279."

Yes, I realize they aren't nearly the same system - but in terms of the impulse-buying, I-gotta-get-a-console-for-myself-or-someone-else crowd, it may be "close enough" in price.

If it weren't for the rampant profanity and hatred that defines the "Xbox Live Experience" I'd consider giving one to my younger brother this holiday season.

And as an aside, the Scottish Fold for the article image is adorable. "I played ur guy ... but he died."

The only thing I disagree about with the Arcade system is the lack of any hard drive. Anyone know if you can do system updates still w/o one? I have the elite so I wouldn't know, so unless they have internal memory to store the xbox updates with, kiss playing it online good bye.

The 360 "System Update" functionality updates the onboard flash memory - naturally, options unavailable on the lower-spec 360 such as backwards compatibility updates aren't downloaded or installed.

Well, the price of the Arcade is great, and now that it has HDMI, wireless controller (and die shrinks that only some know about) like its big brothers, it is even more attractive. All Microsoft has to do is price its storage better or offer alternative storage options.

I have a windows media center 2005 rig that records HDTV content on a currently single HD Tuner. I have tried connecting this PC to my living room projection TV however overscan is an issue for some reason while component devices like X-Box and HD Media players have no overscan issues like the PC does. I believe the issue is video card related not HDTV related.

So do I get a Direct TV HDTV PVR which has lousy reviews and pay $199.00 for something I dont own. Or do I get an X-Box 360 and have it stream the HD recordings from my MCE2005 box to the 360 at a one time cost of $279.00 and no recurring monthly fees. I am only really intersted in the local channels anyhow since I can rent HD-DVD's from netflix if I need a movie.

$199.00 + $9.99 a month for HD from Direct TV.
$279.00 + $0.00 a month for HD from X-Box 360 Streaming from MCE 2005?

Of course this is not an option for those who do not have a PC configured with MCE 2005 or Vista Premium.

My only issue is the 360 must go in the closet with my other components and the close can get a little warm at times so a newer 360 is definately required.

I would like to hear from someone who is using MCE2005/Vista with a 360 streaming HD content if possible on their thoughts.

I'm using my 360 as an MCE with Vista Ultimate and it works very well, I'm running it at 1080i over component. I would recommend however that if you're using it exclusively as an extender that you put it on a dedicated NIC (or you use an efficient midrange switch) because the HD streams can lag at times due to network congestion (I have 2 PCs, wireless from 2 Laptops, my 360 and HDHomeRun all on the same switch/router).

Bottom line, all in all it works as a great solution for me, and I'd never go back to paying for a standalone DVR.

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear thank you. I have wired internet connection in the media closet. I get all the local HD channels in with 89+ signal strength.

I have to say that as a DirectTV HD PVR box, it is just as good as my old TiVo was in terns of interface and experience. The first generation DirecTV-branded boxes had a lot of flaws (thankfully I got my first unit for $100 + $100 mail-in rebate) but the current gen (I've had my HD unit for 6+ months) is quite nice.

My PVR service is also free since I have a premium package, so you may want to confirm the pricing.

That said, if you are happy with your current tuner card, then the 360 may be the best choice for sending it to your TV.

By the way, doesn't one usually pay for something one doesn't own? Paying for something one already owns seems a bit silly to me. :)

It's really not so much price, I work at gamestop; on black friday we sold out of every Wii unit in UNDER 40 minutes! The ENTIRE day I had people asking me if we had a Wii console in!!!

Nintendo would be selling more en masse if they could just get a higher count of units out to the actual brick and mortar stores.

We didn't sell out of Xbox360s.

MaceDew, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this website is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Nice Billy Madison reference.

Anyway, I own both and I love playing my PS3 as much as the 360, but I would still say the OP comment was retarded.

I think the reason Xbox is outselling PS3 is purely due to better price point. It is much closer to the $200 optimal industry price point.

PS3 seems to be doing much better than Xbox popularity wise for it's price point though with a general lack of software, either Blu-Ray or better marketing must make up hte difference.

Microsoft does deserve some flack for RROD but I would venture to guess the net effect from RROD is lower sales not higher.

Are you sure you aren't Activision's CEO? Cause your statement sounds oddly familiar, hrm...

And as for the prior poster, Microsoft has been replacing dead 360's free of charge, including two-way shipping. Microsoft finally realized that there was a problem, and is taking measures to try and make amends.

Last time I checked, they never formally announced any official problems with the 360, they just extended the warranties to have better customer service.
